The music for me is what makes the movie.
Brian Helgeland said in an interview that he used modern music in the movie to show modern audiences what people back then felt about their music. When true Renaissance music is used in modern movies, it fails to convey the emotional response that people back then had to such music. So having 'We will rock you' blaring out at what is essentially a sports stadium evokes exactly that feeling, Its by design.

He also made the point that in the 1300's none of the instruments in something like an orchestra existed yet in that time period. So he said why does it matter if we use music irrelevant to the time period from 600 years later or if we use music irrelevant to the period from 300 years later?

    • @joejoejoe532

@@zachmoyer1849 That's true! I've played the modern flute for 15 years but also own a replica of a Classical era flute from 1790 as well as a Renaissance flute copy form the 1600s: they are noticeably different from each other in tone and temperament, let alone instruments from the 1200s-1300s that would have been when this movie takes place.
On a side note, figures like Mozart were more pop star-esque in their days than any modern stereotype would suggest. Mozart even wrote his era's version of a diss track called "A Musical Joke" that threw shade at composers around him that he thought were inferior. He also wrote a six-part vocal harmony for his drinking buddies called "Leck mich im Arsch," which essentially is a song that says "kiss my a**, we are having fun tonight."
The violinist Niccolo Paganini was one hell of a diva, and pianist Franz Liszt often had women throw panties at him when he performed.
Medieval, Renaissance, and European Classical music were often a lot more "working class" and ingrained in pop culture of the time than the way we would perceive them.

"I wanna laugh more than I feel threatened" - it was the *perfect* delivery of a threat for this movie.
"I don't think the movie justified it very well, why he had to act that way towards her?" - that was the point. He was angry about Adamar, his intended rival, forfeiting and missing the rematch. He was too focused on that moment, and not enough on his love interest, because he was an immature jerk. He had to learn that lesson the hard way. His failings made winning the girl's heart harder - not because his opponent for her hand was worthy, but because he wasn't *yet* doing what he needed to earn her love.

Just some historical context. The film is set in the 1370s. During a lull I'm the hundred years war between England and France.
The villain Count Adehmar is a leader of a "Free company" a group of mercenaries who fought in the war.
The hundred years war was the result of a number of factors.
In 1066, Duke William of Normandy in France became King of England after winning regardless of hastings.
Over the next few generations the English crown gained even more land in France through marriages and by the mod 1100s they controlled more of France than the French king.
After the third crusade in the 1190s the French king Phillip II began taking back territory the English controlled in france.
In the 1290's Edward I of England arranged a treaty with the French king that was sealed by Edwards son marrying the daughter of the French king, Princess Isabella(yes, this is in braveheart)
Isabellas brothers died shortly after her father did causing a succession crisis. isabellas son, Prince Edward had a legit instate claim to the French throne. The French not wanting a English king named a cousin king. When Prince Edward grew up and became King Edward III he pressed his claim.
The Prince in this one is Edward or Woodstock, prince of Wales nicknamed the Black Prince. He was the eldest son of King Edward III.
The hundred years war became a continent wide conflict over time with the Italian cities, Czechia, Bohemia, the Holy Roman Empire(which was mostly In Germany, and central europe), Savoy(a country that was where parts of northern Italy and Switzerland are today), Hungary, Scotland, and even Romania getting involved a various times. The Catholic church tried to play peace make at various times.

I'm pretty sure it was all a stylistic choice: music, attractive people, fabrics that couldn't have existed, etc. It allows the filmmakers to focus on the story they want to tell without holding back any tools for historical accuracy by taking it off the plate immediately.

    • @Skye_Writer
      @Skye_Writer 11 місяців тому +1

It was a stylistic choice, but more for the fact that they wanted to evoke what jousting matches back in the day FELT like. Just like Jaby said, they made it feel like was was NFL football, because back then it *was* like that. Just like the way the first banquet scene goes from a staid medieval-ish type dance to fading into Bowie's "Golden Years" with everyone cutting loose. It's to show us that to the people living in that time, THAT was the feel of those parties for them, whereas modern audiences viewing the dance as it was danced back then would see it as formal and stilted.

If you notice, all of Will's/Ulrick's (Heath Ledger's) opponents pull their lances away from him before they connect so that Will hardly ever gets hit
Patents of nobility are basically family trees to show that you are, in fact, a noble as in a knight, duke, count, prince et cetera
17:05 Adamar's lance is unbroken, meaning he didn't touch Will
Lances, used in jousting, were designed to shatter on impact as a safety feature whereas war lances were solid in order to kill
Jousting is why people in England and it's territories drive on the left hand side of the rode today, You hold the lance in your right hand so you have to ride in the left side to joust. Napolean changed this on the European continent because he marched his soldiers on the right side of the road. England was never conquered so they ride on the left
Knights in armor raised their visors so that they could see each other's faces to see if they were friend or foe, this led to soldiers saluting superior officers
20:25 Joceyln was asking him out on a date to go dancing but Will was too dumb to realize this, which is why he got so upset at her
32:59 This is sometime before the 16th century, Adamar's pointed lance is covered with a fist made of spun sugar and boot black
England and Europe didn't have Sugar before Columbus discovered the Americas
The knight's hype man is called a herald
There IS a post credit scene

This is INCREDIBLY late, but if you had the DVD at the time of release it came with a commentary and interviews cuz DVDs once rocked, which explained the style choice. The music choices are queen and the like because they're sports music. Not just because they're modern but because of the vibe. It absolutely would make a difference with a different soundtrack. Go to a renfair. They're great! But you don't get the same vibe as at a football game. The point was to make a refair have the same vibe as a football game because jousting WAS the football game of their day. Balls were house parties, etc. the anachronistic enhancements were there for jokes but also to get your brain to accept jousting as a sport that it totally was.
Pretty sure that was basically the pitch. Jousting with through a modern lens with beautiful men. I remember the costumer specifically talking about how handsome everyone is in an interview.

I had the DVD of this movie when it first came out and in the director's commentary he discussed the reason they used the modern music. If I remember correctly he said that he wanted to give the impression that there were period pieces of music that they would have used in their time but instead he replaced them with rock anthems from our time to represent those. That's why the modern music wasn't really in the entire movie it was pretty much just during the jousting because they wanted to show that it was about the sport and there would have been types of music that they use to amp up the crowds but that type of music wouldn't have amped up the crowds for our modern tastes so he used something more modern to do so.

Also in case you didn't catch it Paul Betty's character was William Chaucer the poet. And Simon the Summoner was a character that he used in some of his stories as a villain and that's why when he tells Simon the Summoner that he will eviscerate him in writing that Chaucer was naked for a day and Simon would be naked for all eternity that's what he meant by that. Also this movie as a period piece if that is William Chaucer it would put it in a very specific time frame in history because there was about a six to nine month period that no one really knows what William Chaucer was doing he wasn't writing and nobody really knew so that kind of puts this right in that time frame.

To be fair to Jocelyn, she could have had any wealthy knight or Nobel, but she fell in love with a ‘poor country knight”.
She gave him her token (and her name) rather than any other Knight.
She stuck up for him at the dance, where others would have laughed..
Every knight would proclaim to ‘win for her”, but they were competing to win anyway..
So, she tested him, did he really love her, or was he just another ego driven glory hound like Adhemar?
In the end he proved his love, and she stuck by him, even when learning that he was a poor peasant and a criminal.
Jocelyn dinae get enough appreciation I think.
Other than that, I agree, I love William’s crew.

1:35 - I mean, today we have MMA which is worse than jousting. Also the English formation made sense for the warfare of the time; it was a bad time in that sense but that was what they had to do.
19:00 - In reality, people wouldn't withdraw because of it. There are account of Kings who died during jousting in history.
28:55 - Though he did it illegally.
33:01 - Jousting was a point-based sport, it wasn't about doing damage though accidents would happen.
34:09 - Tha way the scene is shot may imply that he actually sent him to the grave (though that it's not realistic, by removing his armour he lost a lot of his kinetic energy and the hook for the lance so William would have broken his arm and fallen off his horse).

I used to joust and I had a shard/splinter go through my eye slit (ocular) and hit me in the brow. One hell of a technicolor black eye! - BTW the classic rock music was supposed to play on the idea that jousters were the rock stars of the time.

It's like the movie "Glory" again :P And i'll put Ledger on top 3 of the greatest actors i ever saw, i cant explain it, its like youre not sexually attacted to him but he's so charismatic thet you almost cant take your eyes off from him, and its not sexual, its really a mystery

Props to Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell for finishing that film on behalf of Heath, and all donating their earnings from it to his daughter Matilda.
It was fortunate that the film had a concept that allowed them all to do so, and that Terry Gilliam was determined to finish it to honor Heath, despite Heath's passing before filming very much of it, when he could have just recast.
