I can't believe that you are holding the radio by the antenna. That is bad for the radio. Just taking the antenna off and on is not good but holding it by the antenna is terrible.
@@TheNotaRubicon I have damaged radios that way. The connection from the antenna to the radio can come loose and I have had that happen. Your radio will not receive or transmit as well if you keep doing that. I have had these radios since the mid 80s and I know what I'm talking about. Through normal wear and tear, an antenna can become kinked or broken. Another way antenna can become damaged is if users pick the radio up by the antenna. This can cause damage at the connection point to the radio.
Well radio reference website is dead. Those moderators banned so many members that it killed the hobby off let alone what technology did. Those moderators did not contribute to keeping the radio hobby alive instead they killed it off by not offering any kind of assistance or information. No technical support. The salespeople in the stores always said go to that website because the salepeople didn't know a thing about the radio hobby they were just into the marketing aspect of it. So now radio reference is just a mere shell of its self. It serves them well. 🤣🤣😂🤣

As a lisenced ham I can say the light has come in handy quite often. I would like to see a brighter led, another red led for low light and an on button that works if the radio is off

Thanks buddy. I'm a nookie with a uv 5rM, and bought two PRMs too. The little basics radios we're set to go, but on ctcss codes so I couldn't hear my uv 5r but it could hear them, as an ameture found this video helpful as now set the 2 minis to zero and all three can communicate, and feel confident that this advice should be sufficient to stay safe on excursions until I've studied a bit more, I'm happy for now.

Just discovered something worth knowing with my newly acquired UV5R. Even if TDR (dual standby) is on, if you are listening to the FM radio you can only receive the highlighted channel.

Great introduction for beginners! I have a problem setting my new Baofeng GT-3TP (Mark III) to permanently TXR-power = low. When i change the mode (frequency/channel) or switch the channel it always resets to TXR-power = High. I want low as a default setting for all channels and frequencies. I can program it to every channel but when i switch the radio off and on again, all settings of TXR-pwr are back to 'high' as default. Am i missing something here?

You can expand the standard UV5R VHF to 125-250 MHz (177-187 MHz locks up during transmit) and UHF to 376-520 MHz with reasonable performance on the extended range.
If the TDR is on, how do you know which channel is talking, and do you have to physically switch channels, or is it really just using both channels all the time for receiving and transmitting all the time when on?

That UV5R GMRS radio should work great with any other GMRS radio and even those cheap bubble pack FRS radios at wallmart. Tell your friends to get one and you should be good to go. Have fun out in the back country with the radios and then come back here and give us a full report.
There are about 5 states that you can be arrested in for having this radio in your car. You are exempt if you are an amateur radio operator like me. However, if the police don't know about the exemption you are screwed. I was arrested in Kentucky. They towed my car and went through all my stuff. I had to go to court where all charges were dropped when I showed the judge the exemption in the law. Did I get an apology from the police? No.

I got my license so complicated to get🤦 anyway now I'm trying to program my radios so I can communicate with family meme era in near by city's for 911 emergency situations . Mainly to practice for now and be able to communicate for when a situation arises. Are there any videos you have that can help with this. Good quality ham HF units with directional antennas on the roof. You're not going to find any handheld nor low-cost/simple radios that can reliably communicate across the country.
I have the Baofeng UV-5R+PLUS. I tried changing the WN to wide from narrow through the radio. It keeps defaulting to narrow. Is this a setting that needs to be changed through chirp? My other radios are the opposite. BF-F8HP UV-82HP
Been enjoying your videos for a while now. The best part is your tone. These are just toys for an otherwise useless hobby. I understand they would be the final communication tool when the apocalypse hits - so, go ahead, have fun, keep it running. But at this point in human civilization everybody carries a radio, sans license, that can communicate around the world. I own a Baofeng AND a full ham radio but don't have nor need a license. Should the occasion ever require the use of either devices, having a license will be the bottom of anything anyone cares about. TL;DR - hams, your close to useless hobby does not deserve the dead serious behavior you all seem to want to push. It is no longer the pre 1970's - lighten up.
My radio won't retain the BCL setting. It turns off if I exit menu or just go to a different menu option after confirming my choice. Is this affected by another setting?
Dumb noob question!! I’m trying to connect to a local repeater. Site owner sent me the freq and input tone and output tone only. I plopped them into the radio, I can hear people but no one hears me. The map on mygrms shows lm in range of said repeater. Other than setting the frequency and input/output tone, is there something else I need? 🤔
Does it matter what frequency I use if it's just between local friends or is there optimal frequencies in different areas? I'm on a canal in the UK💚🇬🇧🌱 trying to hook up fellow boaters with these radios & I've found your channel very helpful...👌
Brother you skipped addressing Tctcs and T dcs settings? How come ? Any these settings can possibly make other party listening just transmission without modulation (voice ) through the repeater? 73
Been a while since I watched through some of your stuff again. Didn't even notice your big mouse pad. Haha I think all the Sad Hams stuff about these are funny. They work for what I need. Still gotta get programming freq (w/CTCSS) onto the channel mode side, but other than that, they work. Got a bad battery retention button with mine, but I work around it.

The roger beep setting is absolutely the most important setting, especially when ker-chunking my local ham repeaters.

After I purchased the UV-5R I was able to pass the ham test. I think it made me smarter.

Without a good home base station. You could talk between two handhelds like this over a few miles right? For a shtf situation
It depends on what is between you and the other radio but you can expect to get anywhere from 200 yards to 40 miles.

You bought a GMRS radio, which can only talk to other GMRS (and FRS) radios, not to any HAM radio... ;-)

I've been using my UV5R to hit a repeater 50 miles away with my yagi. 👍
However, I prefer my Yaesu 2980 because I don't get walked on during checkins at 80 watts.

No. You will have to either learn to cope with it or toss it in the trash and invest $19 in a new one.
