- Face masks are critical in keeping patients safe. The design quality has degraded over the years as costs have become paramount. Dr Jim Roberts and I talk through the issues and our desire to change things in the future.

Can't believe that the quality of the design is so poor given the importance!
agreed!
In industry we have more mouldable face masks for ease of use. It’s impossible for “one mask to fit all”
No doubt down to cost!
Enjoyed the humour too
Have a great weekend
Best regards
Totally agree! We want the tools we work with to be better and safer.
As a patient, I don't care if it costs more -- it should work well!
As a patient in the US, I'm in the hands of the insurance industry. Guess what their sole interest is.
I believe I saw the same masks there as well.
Thank you Docs! Really appreciate the efforts in making medicine better!
Hello Dr Veer!
First yet again! Always love to see the collaborative videos with other Doctors.
Super interesting to hear from other perspectives and other disciplines too
Thanks !!!
I think Jim enjoys it once he gets into it. He hasn't seen that I keep all the stuff in and not edit it. He doesn't read text messages so I suspect he'll never watch these videos either
So as you operate you are using this as a cpap which doesn’t cause the person being operated on to stop breathingWhich makes sense. Quite Comical with the lady entering and the phone. But what if I need teeth removed how do I have an anaesthetic please? That’s what I used to have and actually I do need.
I could have edited it all out, but it just seemed more authentic with it altogether. glad you liked it.
Good evening. From what you've shown, 1) I think straps like a cpap mask would free up 2 hands and apply some needed pressure to face. 2) A clamp or screw device across the width to adjust mask fitment, like he showed manually with thumbs. 3) Should not cost much more, if mass produced.
Very interesting, thanks. Do private hospitals use the same masks as NHS?
Everyone uses the same mask as far as I can see
I find your videos highly informative and useful
But it would really be more helpful if you can provide videos for doctors or residents
Maybe another channel please
Without the correct tools, it makes any procedure very difficult
Best
I've been trying to adapt a 3M 7500 1/2 face respirator for CPAP. I removed the front and inserted the CPAP tube and filled in all the holes with silicone. But it needs to be redesigned (more cheaply) by a biomed engineer. The great thing is it pliable and fits the face beautifully, and goes under the chin to hold it in place. 3D scanning is a winner. I had it done for my teeth for mandibular advancement.
@ubute, very nice contribution to this conversation and the search for better CPAP masks!
Good idea! The new masks for CPAPs are nicely made.
I think so too!
Is there a type of "clamp" that could be used to reshape the mask and free up the hands of the anesthesiologist or his assistant? It could clamp onto that ridge. Maybe sizing the patient and need for adjustments during the consultation or is that already being done?
Nothing like that. We thought about scanning the face at pre assessment clinic but apparently very expensive even using iPhone tech
@@VikVeerENTSurgeon one of the mail-order clothing chains in the USA was experimenting with scanning the entire body for sizing purposes.
@@Lost-In-Blank Interesting.
CPAP masks: Too narrow at the bridge of the nose, that was my Resmed F20 mask. Too narrow at my mouth, that is my F&P Vitera mask. And these things come in only 3 sizes each. The hard plastic on the F20 also has a flat profile, except for relief at the bottom.
Iv. got a wider base nose, and it causes problems with my CPAP machine so I know how important it is to have more individual considered masks. Dont break something if it works. Ideas---Mutes up the nasels, and a teeth fitting thing that keeps the jaw open even when pressure applied...like the teeth grinding one that has a hole in it.
Do Jet Pilot air masks come to mind?
IS HE GOING TO PUT YOU SLEEP 😊😊
Think of all the size and shape variations on N95 masks.
