It’s fun to go back and watch some of the old test rides. I have a tesla but have always loved the i3. I also love these scenic road trips. Please do more
I made a mistake few days ago during the Autoshow I was attending. I was about to leave at 5pm...and I saw a kiosk which gave out EV test drives as part of a promotion of electric cars. The hot car was the new Chevrolet Bolt (or for you Europeans, the Opel Ampera-E) and the man in front of me took the Leaf, which left me with the i3 or Soul EV. I wanted to drive the Bolt but was told they would be closing in 5 minutes. So I took the BMW keys without much thought. After spending almost an hour in it...now I WANT an i3. Never before I've driven a car this quiet, relaxed, smooth and so serene in traffic. I think the EV bug bit me hard, and the i3 with its efficiency minded design & engineering only adds to the allure.
The Bolt is definitely nice (from sitting in it, playing with the infotainment and poking about) thought I didn't have the chance to drive it. 238miles (or 383km) of range is very tempting, but I'm not sure if it is as much fun to drive as the i3.
@@jwhdesign I like everything about the i3 _EXCEPT_ those super skinny tires! For two reasons: One, they're really skinny and most reviewers say that the vehicle can skid on uneven terrain (dirt roads, etc) and two, since they're specially made for the i3 they are quite expensive compared to "normal" tires. Supposedly they only last about 20000 miles (32187 km) or so, too, which makes it even worse. What has been your experience with the tires?
@@Cloudrak In the end I ended up with a 2016 Kia Soul EV+, which I LOVE so far. Got a fantastic deal too: Less than $13000, less than 18000 miles and one owner, great condition. Had to have it shipped because they didn't sell it in my state, but it was worth it.
Hi Bjork, as i3 94ah Rex owner thanks for this and other great vídeos. About your this i3 review just to mention that un the underfloor of the trunk is not correct that you hace an empty space reserved for only the Rex. Heat pump is located in that space and that It is the reason Heat pump is not available as an option for the Rex version. And last thing I think you miss to mention what I think is a very unique i3 feature "battery preconditioning" that is great un low temperatura conditions. It is only available if the car is equiped with heater seats option. Once again thats for this and the rest of your all videos I did not miss any of them 😀
Oh that was priceless! I advanced to this part jus for that one. And i love how fast its possible to write on that knob thingy. (soooo much faster than touch screens) PS: Bjorn u shouldn't touch that BMW knob. ;D
Bjorn, have you seen the TV series Lilyhammer (filmed in Lillehammer, Norway in 2013)? Steven Van Zandt drives an i3 in snow around Lillehammer in the early episodes. We love our 2 year old i3 BEV - great engineering, but quirky looking. Adding a Tesla MX 90D next week which replaces my BMW X5. Excited. Can never go back to ICE. Thanks for the detailed reviews!
The car can actually steer itself with lane detection only, so no car in front is necessary. The rest of the limitations you mentioned are correct. Greetings from Germany ✌️
Watching your video made me think of i3 again. So brought my wife to have a look at it at a dealer. Had a test drive and bought one. Then talked for a couple of days and have decided to sell our ICE car. On to test how life with pure BEV works.
I've had a Renault Zoe 2 years now, it has preconditioning. 5mins from key button or you can set to turn on or timer from the app. New Zoe has a battery heater too, so hopefully that helps in cold climates.
Many thanks for the great video and your valuable review of the car and I really love your German, so great and spot on. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Hi Bjorn, I am really surprised that you time by time throw in some german words, pretty well pronounced. I always enjoy the way you provide the information. The music around 38:00 is great :)
I have an i3 and whilst it is very good there are some failings which I wouldn't have expected. Such as the anti-reflective mirrors the passenger side doesn't dim. The carpet was cut short near the acceleration pedal. The paint seems to be less stronger and tougher than on my other ICE BMW cars.
Mine should arrive in a couple of weeks!! Exactly the same colour and equipment as this one. Only some different wheels and seats (I don't like leather seats...). Really looking forward for your review!
The app always takes that long to synchronize the settings to the car, and I think it's really annoying. It takes that long for changes to the charging and air conditioning schedule, immediate conditioning, horn, lights, locking, and unlocking the car...

Bjørn. You get 30kWh out of the battery as regenerative braking is topping it up. The trip shows power used. So 27kWh available plus (say) 3kWh of regeneration. The old app shows how many miles you drive to get 1kWh of regeneration.
Great video & review... What temperature was it on this trip? Specifically do you know what temperature it was when you got 170km out of that first long leg of the trip? I'm wondering if under worst conditions in Winnipeg, Canada if I can get about 110km or more with the 94ah i3. So like -30c against the wind, going 100kmph, I'm actually expecting it would only get somewhere around 80-100km which isn't enough for me at least not for 2 or 3 months of the year. Thanks.

I took one on a test drive and can attest that the car allows for very sporty driving. Remember, apart from the Smart EV, the BMW is the lightest BEV currently out there.
