Perfect song: the vocal melody, the guitar parts, the mellotron, the bass line, the drums, the viola, all in perfect harmony.

King Crimson had the most musically knowledgeable fans of any progressive rock band IMO. If someone said Crimson was among his or her favorite prog bands, they were always very into music and music history. If you want to have serious prog conversations, find some folks who list KC among their favorite bands.

Wetton joins the mellotron intro with a beautiful contrapuntal bass line. Then starts singing while not missing a beat on the bassline, what a talent!!

As a bass player/singer, I have no idea how he manage to to both of em simultaneously so flawlessly. His bass lines are very complex

Phil Lesh once described trying to sing while playing bass as “black magic.” There’s WAY too much coordination involved!

this version has a really eerie opening from the mellotron. but I think that really adds to the already spooky element that exiles has in it's opening sequence. truly a beautiful piece written by Robert Fripp and Co.

No Prog Rock group can touch this version of crimson for live performances and Fripp is not only the greatest prog rock guitar player, but the best composer and overall musician!

Seems to be some real magic between these particular musicians and live and sometimes improvised, amazingly backtracking John Wetton's career and finding this album if I had a time machine would be in my top 5 all time concerts to see live.

@@voxdot Same here. Bruford's drumming especially on the USA version of this song is proto hip hop in the groove. So steady yet breathing.

Rhode Island's the best IMO. When Bruford enters on drums, it's like entering a different universe. And Wetton's vocals are unmatched.

Fripp adds just enough to serve the song even though he's totally capable of "melting faces" at any time. Wetton's vocals and awesome bass line carry the day here.
