Classic Game Room reviews the Nintendo AV Famicom HVC-101 released in 1993. The "new" Nintendo Family Computer has a standard composite video output and stereo RCA plugs allowing it work perfectly on western televisions without that hum or blurry video!. CGR AV Famicom video review features the Nintendo HVC 101 game system and video games like Super Mario Bros., Crisis Force, Gun-Nac and Stargate!!
Sadly the American NES version of this only had the R/F Switch hookup with coaxial cable.
Some US top loader were were upgraded to composite video by Nintendo service/repair if customers complained about video quality. These specimens are extremely rare.
*Yeah they stank*
The Angry video game nerd uses this more than the original NES.
No but the top loader
The HVC-101's are rising in price fairly regularly in Japan. They were about $60-70 just a couple of years ago and now I see them for around $100.
its still not bad imo since they are both less common than the og famicom, and are better
The best version of the NES hands down!
You don't only comment on Amy Dallen but also on Lord Karnage!!
HIGH FIVE!!

Whos AMY DALLEN?

100% agree. It seems any Nintendo unit with the "101" model is the best you can get.
Allie, are you everywhere? First I see you on RTU, now here.
Not that I'm complaining, mind you.
Later models of the original Famicom had RCA outputs too. I always thought they were the ones people referred to as the A/V Famicom.
Sitting down to watch some classic game room at the end of the day is so relaxing. Always enjoy your sense of humor Mark.
A Very Amazing Video And Versatile Audacious Voicing
Clever, very clever :3
I have become a Famicom addict after getting one of these. Super crisp video output, no hassles with games not working.
I'm shocked that I didn't know this existed (or forgot about it if I did). Rather interesting that it shares a design with the NES top loader, but forces AV instead of RF, whereas the NES top loader forced RF instead of AV. Nintendo is weird sometimes.
I have one AV Famicom (it's awesome) and just sold my old famicom for a very good price... one of the greatest systems of all time!
4:08 It's also a let down because it can't play Vectrex games!
damn, watching this makes me realize how much i miss game cover art, the hand drawn stuff. i miss that so much....
There's also Famicom adapters that can use for the old NES and Retron consoles. =3
I had my NES Top loader AV Modded with the vertical lines removed. In hindsight I probably should have bought an AV famicom and cartridge adapter, but I didn't want to deal with cartridge adapters.
The only famicom game i have is Castlevania 3 its a great system bought mine for 60 dollars on ebay and it also plays the american games with a converter.
You sound like the famous actor Harold Ramis from GHOSTBUSTERS!!! 😎 z
In Japan, AV stands for Adult Video. Trufax.
I bought one today (7/6/2023) at a thrift store!!
I am from India but I really want to buy this
On my CRTV you just put the original Famicom on 95. It works fine for me.
What kind of cases are those?
Mine is arriving in the mail later today, I can't wait.
I bought it because I don't have the room for a bunch of different consoles, and it's clearly the best version of this hardware. The NES toploader is RF only and has video quality issues (which can be addressed with a couple of mods, but I don't want to do that to such a rare piece), the regular Famicom is also RF only (although there are plenty of AV modded ones floating around on eBay) and you can't use NES accessories with it. The regular NES is okay, but if you want to get a Disk System (which I do), hooking one up to it is more trouble than it's worth. The AV Famicom gives you the best of each console, and just needs a simple converter to play NES carts (which I bought as well).
^^this
sonicdoesfrontflips
Do you have one too?
It's been seven months since I made that comment and mine arrived, and it's been great so far. My only real complaint is that I can't use my NES Zapper with it, and the Japanese gun is pretty rare and expensive (about $100, and there's no guarantee that it'll even make it through customs because it looks like a real gun). But I've got the necessary wiring diagram to splice an NES controller/accessory with a Famicom plug, I plan on buying an NES FourScore and a junked Famicom controller to make the conversion. It should work, I've seen a guy here on UA-cam that did it for his regular Famciom, he demonstrated it working with a NA copy of SMB/Duck Hunt (which was hooked up with a 72 to 60 pin converter). It should theoretically work with the Famicom's light games as well, hopefully I won't have to get something else.
TBustah Yes I do have one, it's the best way to play famicom carts. And the 72 to 60 pin converter (which I also bought from an Irish seller) is good because my toaster NES gets the blinking light sometimes.
I had no idea the American zapper doesn't work on it! I've never played the zapper games, but when I do get a zapper I'll probably just let my toaster do it. Sounds like some complicated stuff you're doing, do the controller ports lack a certain pin? Or are the Japanese zapper games programmed a little differently?
sonicdoesfrontflips I honestly don't know why it doesn't work. The game I tested it with was a North American Zapper-compatible game that is programmed to read the Zapper from the second controller port. Theoretically, it should work just fine. Famicom Dojo told me that it probably has something to do with the way the motherboard is laid out. My solution really isn't complicated at all: all I'm doing is chopping the plug off of a Four Score and splicing the wires to a plug that will connect to the Famicom extension port, like the Japanese gun does. I have the wiring diagram to show me which wires connect to which.
TBustah Oh, I see what you're doing now. It sounds like it should work as long as your zapper wires eventually reach the correct pins in the extension. It's not as simple as splicing the extension plug right onto the zapper itself, which would be fine, I assume, if not for the NES game needing it in the 2nd port.
It sounds like you know your stuff, and if it worked on a model 1 famicom then theoretically it should work fine.
don't you mean the NES 2 also called the NES top loader. there was also an SNES 2 that came out after the N64
My preferred NES. It has everything while every other Famicom/NES always lacked at least 1 integral feature.
Always love Classic Game Room!
Will this play PAL NES games on an LCD TV?
I prefer the dogbone controllers only cause of how I play. the old NES controller corners dig into my hand
Why would anyone prefer the old NES controllers?
i am totaly obsessed with japan
lol, U should do a review of Time Crisis for PS1!
The price of these have actually fallen in the last couple of years thanks to all the mods that have come out for the Top Loader NES (and Front Loader). The Top Loader NES is actually more expensive nowadays than the AV Famicom, which was unimaginable 3-5 years ago.
+Lord Karnage you are by far the most entertaining game and console reviewer IN THE WORLD
I do not condone amputating vultures.
That's really cool, I've never seen that before.
The Angry Video Game Nerd has the Nintendo AV Famicom console, too.
No, it's the US version NES 2 Toploader. During the close up's you can see Nintendo Entertainment System on the front instead of Family Computer.
For a sec I thought you were looking at the Western version of this fine machine. Already I feel a bit saddened at this thing having the AV out option, the Toploader over here does not come with that option. This especially since you can hook the NES with that (red and yellow anyways), but this thing forces the coaxel on you.
None of that matters though! Region free gaming, a system that works far more successfully than the original NES, and it's more compact than that old brick. ...Still comes with the dogbone controller though...I'm not much of a fan, but you can use the old NES controllers so we're all good! I was disappointed at the lack of a Vetris port, talk about lost potential there Nintendo, you could have brought forth a new breed of console to compete with Sega, ah well that's history. Special thanks to Game Force for selling this baby to me for 25 bucks...well rather I would, but they closed down unfortunately, a moment of silence as we bury the store...along with it's Dogbone controllers while we're at it.
(It's midnight, don't judge)
Space Quest III box in the background, I love you.
Wait... This looks like the NES Top Loader BUT with A/V and is Famicom instead of NES... I was surprised He didn't mention that in this video.
does the av famicom have better audio since it uses av instead of an rf switch
Yea it does It’s better all round.
Review the American NES 2
i LOL'ed way to hard at "asstastic vermocity" xD
I wish this man did lets plays already
It also plays amercian NES games with a converter much better than that RF Top Loader av is good!
it amazes me you americans never got scart, its infinitely better than everything up to component and hdmi.
I hate the way it looks. Rather than being red and white, yes your yellow famicom looks like crap as you've mentioned before because its not suppose to be yellow, its got the whole bland american grey look.
I would much rather Mod my beautiful original red and white Famicom for A/V out with a headphone style jack in place of the rf and I am!
Wow, did Nintendo try to make every console uglier than it's predecessor on purpose? This and the American SNES are 2 of the most ugly designend videogame consoles ever.
Getting one next friday! Pretty excited!
Is it possible to get S-Video out of this? I'm guessing not but it's the same port as a snes, no?
Where can I buy an Amputated Vulture and is it expensive?
Damn i miss CGR. The first and one of the best i used to watch
Those famicom games had such better labels.
Famicom Week when? :D
Bird Week!
Isn't this just a japanese model 2 nes ?
*jes*
So famicom games do work on a top loader? (japanese version) Because i have a dragon ball z and street fighter. the 2 games i think that are the best for the system. I just dont have a system to play it on
you have my dream room :o
I know this video was posted waaay back but I was wondering would this console work on PAL tvs? I have a ~20years old tv and a ~5years old tv, some people have told me that it doesn't since PAL consoles are 50hz and USA/JPN is 60hz. Some people have told me that it doesn't matter as long as I have a "modern TV" so I'm kinda confused.
Trying to get one on ebay but they're so damn expensive.
Thake a ppu rgb (playchoice or mod) for best quality
Dude Have you tried a game called Heavy Barrel? its a Data East game on the NES that is far too good not to be reviewed :D
I have a Famiclone console (I have actually two, but the older one doesn't work :'( ) and a shoe box full of games! I love the Famicom Cartridges, they are good looking :3
Btw StarGate looks like a game made for the atari 2600! But is very fun and flashy.
(Sorry for my bad english, I speak spanish :P)
Works with HVC-022
Do you have a Sharp Twin Famicom?
2:29 turns out Mario actually hates mushrooms too, he only uses them because they are powerups.
*_s u p e r m a r e e o b r a s_*
I cant fucking find one wtf
Wait, what? It plays Disk Drive game?
Noticable with super nintendo
We all need MORE CGR... EDF EDF EDF...
someone should record classic game room on VHD (video high density) disks
Yay! No more filming off the screen! :D
I'm fairly sure that version of the NES was region free.
Awesome
I love
Wow. Mark wasn't kidding when he said this thing aint cheap. They go over a $100 used. Man. Getting an original famicom is cheaper. :| But the Famicom AV looks amazing! U.S Game and controller support? Heck Yeah! Count me in!!
Could you do a review of the US version aka NES 2? It's basically the same thing except it accepts US and European NES cartridges
Oh cool! It uses the same AV-out connector as the SNES, Nintendo 64 and GameCube. My life is now better after seeing this video.
If I ever finish writing my epic Sci-fi robot movie, I want Mark to narrate and voice EVERYTHING!!!
3:03
Wait... Are these plastic cases for Nintendo cartridge-based games?
Blasphemy!
3:01 Because you said it was useless in the original version's review. Goddamnit, Mark, stop flip-flopping!
I have almost all these games on my multi card
0/10 no truxton
Good!! But where is the xbox one review?
You know what game somebody needs to send him for the Famicom? Takeshi no Chousenjou (Takeshi's Challenge).
Will one advantage that original famicom have over the av famicom is the microphone and also mark review chojin sentai jetman and kyoryu sentai zyuranger for the famicom
Yeah, some games took advantage of the second controller's microphone like Takeshi's Challenge and the Legend of Zelda, which can possibly render them unplayable on the AV Famicom.
Like nes toploader
Was gonna hunt down an original, but wasn't sure if uk tvs, even modern once support ntsc rf. This av model looks like a safer bet.
Is that thing sort of like a Japanese SNES/NES hybrid system?
I prefer my first Famicom model that has been AV modded, tbh. It looks way better and it is my first console ever.
review that puzzling bird game :O
a have alot of those games
I want bird week now.
Would it be possible to use this with an AV to SCART adapter because my tv only takes SCART and HDMI?
*jes*
Is the best of classic game room being released on Laser Disc?
DVD and VHS.
They tried to, but only DVD and Blu-Ray :(
Though the special hyper thingie box comes in a laserdisc style case :D
Castlemaster712 Interesting. VHS/VCRs should come back.
Camel76 They were good, I used to love putting them in the VCR as a kid :3

How about... American Version?
*It had a stinky RF jack which was poor*
bird week is one of my favorites 🥺
Does it play NES games because I have seen avgn use this with news games
I believe AVGN has the top loading NES, which is the USA version of it. But it can't play Famicom games and doesn't come with AV output either.
Does it only play Japanese titles? Or can it play US games?
Tom Hanson You'll need a 72 to 60 pin adapter to play US games.
Star Gate theme reminds me of Punch Out but extended
Honestly I like those old school looking consoles, it's lighter and smaller lol.
