40mm equiv is super under rated imo, especially on 4:3 sensors. My 20mm lives on my m4/3 camera, and I can't believe how much I prefer it to 17 (35) and 25 (50). I find the 28-35mm field of view to be a lifeless deadzone between actually wide lenses and standard stuff.

It is 2021 now, 2 days ago I bought a Fuji GFX 50S + Battery Grip + GF50mm f3.5 with 62mm UV filter and all the boxes for $3800. The kit was owned for 2 years, but hardly used by the previous owner. I don't know if I paid too much for it, since the 50S was introduced 4 years ago and now that a Mark 2 is rumored coming out in August. Oh well....
Glad you are happy with your purchase. Your conclusions regarding the kit are clearly based on the content of the images. Without that emotional connection I am seeing soft snaps that many rigs could generate without any effort.

OK, you tipped me over the edge. Next purchase. Hopefully it will fill the void my Fuji GW690II used to fill (which I shot for the first time in 20 years last week, can't wait to get my film back).
The preception I had when this lens was release was, $1k for that! It is downright an amazing lens and value. I also own the 63mm 2.8 which is on another level as well. The GF 50mm is just more fun, more pleasing. f3.5 is great too because you can't hide behind the laziness of DOF. your frame needs to be right and this lens reminds me more of this.
So glad I saw this, I really wanted a gf 100-200mm 5.6 lens to go with the gfx50r when I buy it but thought I would have to pay a lot for a 50mm lens, I am saving up for the camera and lenses at the moment, the 100-200 photos I have seen have been excellent and this 50mm looks great as well, thanks for the video.
Great video and I just realized the word I have been looking for to describe digital medium format...cinematic. Even your photos around the house just have a cinematic quality to them you don't get with smaller sensor cameras. Im really tempted to grab one of these $1,000 off on the holiday special for $3,499.

Great video and great review. I hope Fujifilm notices your work and you get sponsored, you sound really inspired and that is a great sales speech for this camera. Now I want one... :(
Great video! Very inspiring. Makes me want this setup. Regarding the one caviat with this lens (minimal shooting distance) can you use extension tubes in this system? Sorry if it's a silly question.
I think that F3.5 on this medium format lens would be F2.8 equivalent in full frame terms when you take into account the 0.8 factor. Or am I missing something?
In terms of depth of field, yes. It will have the field of view of 40mm and look like a 2.8 in 35mm terms. In APS-C terms, it would be something like having a 27mm f/1.8, or in MFT it would be like a 20mm f/1.4. In terms of light gathering though, it's still physically a 3.5.
This is the gfx equivalent of the EF 40mm 2.8. Way sharper than it ought to be, light and nimble, enough depth of field but not too much, super natural field of view.
Does focusing with the latest firmware speed up and improve? Did it affect the focus or anything else in the twilight. For myself, the 50R just came in, but I can’t test it before the lenses come.
The 50/3.5 on GFX is equivalent to 26/1.8 on the Fuji X system. So it’s closest X lens is 23/1.4. Please put the 23/1.4 on your XT1 and shoot it side by side with the GFX 50R with 50/3.5. That might make an interesting comparison video, especially considering the low price of an XT1.
Haha! I'm an equal opportunity aircraft lover. I've since added the A-10 into the mix as well. I think the F-16 is probably my favorite so that's a big win for the USAF. ;) I'm an Army vet myself, but love my aircraft!
@@KentuckyMan30 Ah! My favorit e has always been the F4D Phantom and the Fugly A7D Attack. I was stationed at Myrtle Beach AFB in SC when the A7D was being replaced with the A10. I used to go out to the gunnery range and OMG what a beast that was!!! And, Thank you for your service!

Regarding the close focusing issue. How is the depth of field for landscape work? I'm thinking David Muench style with rocks in the foreground 3 feet from the lens and sharp to infinity. This lens stops down to f32 and Fuji has that great depth of field scale in the EVF so that should cover all landscape work??
I guess focus stacking would be a good technique for that sort of work. You can get more depth of field than f/32 can give you, plus you could shoot at a wider aperture to avoid diffraction.
did you know you can get a kipon speedbooster to mount Pentax 6x7 glass? Gives you and extra 0.7 back in FOV. Yeah, you only have manual focus.. but getting larger than real 645 FOV on a digital sensor would be sick!
Hi, Greetings from Ireland thank you for the great review. I am going to buy the GFXR If money was not a problem do you think the 32-64 would be a better option and would it be a sharp thank you.
The 32-64 is sharp but quite large on the 50R. Very versatile though. The 50mm 3.5 is a cracking lens and fits the 50R like a glove. I went 50mm 3.5 and 23mm f/4 for wide angle.
Great video...you can also mention how fast this lens is compared to the 62mm. I also own a Fuji GFX 50r and love it. A winning team in combination with the X100F! BTW: Great to see a video by an owner of this camera. There are too many reviews by people who review stuff just for a couple of hours without any substance.
Glad you liked it! I'd love to try out the 63mm, but haven't used it yet, so I can't really say how it compares to the 50mm. I may request that from Fuji to try!
I don’t know if you will ever see this question but would you use the 50r for real estate? The dynamic range makes me want to add it to my kit. I don’t have a full frame and I have a good kit in Fuji X-system. I want more detail and dynamic range than I get from my X-t3. I can easily justify 50r as I can R5,A7rIV or Z7 II. Can you test it out ?
Hey! I tried it out on a RE shoot in my initial review of the 50R (with the 32-64mm). The short of it is, I still find the X-T2 to be better suited for RE (for me at least). ua-cam.com/video/wm9YKwhcEUo/v-deo.html
When did you buy it with 50% off? I'm eyeing the 50R with this lens on B&H, but waiting for a deal to strike and would like to know, at what month this is usually happening. There was a 50R plus this lens special for a total of $3500 last spring, so that's what I'm after ultimately P.S.: Your photos are really great 🙌
great review, Im thinking to get medium format but still dont understand, is it using the same lens as full frame? or specific dedicated medium format lens?
Thanks! It'a a completely different lens mount. It's a much bigger opening (due to the bigger sensor) and thus the lenses are wider in circumference. If you want to be able to shoot with full frame lenses, you'll have to buy an adapter (and which adapter to buy depends on the brand of lens). Adapting smaller mount lenses can come with downsides though. You might notice some heavy vignetting as the full frame lenses have a smaller circumference, so don't cover the larger sensor completely. I think for a lot of people, that isn't a big deal. They will either crop the image slightly, correct it in post, or just roll with the look. Haha.
I always love your reviews. That cat looks like a panther with the MF framing and the forested surroundings. Just checking the NY store, I see that there are 20mm and 48mm extension tubes from FotodioX which have electronic contacts. I haven't used them (nor anything from that brand), but you may wish to try them with the 50mm for closer shots :)
To be clear you take VERY nice pictures but i must say, I don't get the GFX with its seemingly slow lens options. So with this lens you get an f2.8 FF equivalent or around a 1.8 APSC equivalent. Wouldn't your XT-2 with a Fuji 35 1.4 or even the Viltrox 1.4 be better in low light/shallower depth of field for a setup that costs a ton less. Or do you feel the sharpness or ability to crop is that big an advantage?
First off, I'm glad you enjoy my photos! Part of the fun of having a channel is getting to share my work and I'm glad there are people out there that appreciate it! For me, the 50R doesn't make the most sense from a practical perspective. It certainly is A LOT of money for what on paper seems to be lackluster when you start doing all the equivalent comparisons. However, the 50R specifically is right there with the X-T1 as my favorite camera I've ever used. It's incredibly fun to shoot with right down to the loud and sluggish sounding shutter. It IS cool to have such a monster sensor with loads of detail to play around with as well. Honestly, the 50R isn't something I needed (or will ever NEED for that matter), but it was something I wanted almost exclusively for the fun and enjoyment of it. It just so happens to be a plus that my images come out looking as good to me as the camera is fun to use.
Hello Sir, could you please say if the autofocus is good enough for a casual shooting? I mean street, family portraits and normal stuff? Thank You in advance!
Thank You for a quick reply! I was confused should I choose gfx 50r or z7. But my heart always said gfx. It gives a 3d look which I only observed in Leica with Summilux lenses. And it is a manual focus set up with over 10000$ tag. I thank you again for helping me in making a decision!!!
Where is the picture at 4:13 taken? And also the other beach photos. Looks like someplace I’d like to visit someday. I just found your channel today, keep up the good work. Greetings from Sweden
Sold it back in 2021 through no fault of its own. I bought it essentially for personal work (wasn't shooting any paid gigs with it) and ended up selling it to fund my watch addiction. Haha. Just been using the X-T1 and X100T pretty much since then.
@@KentuckyMan30 Thanks for the response, for me it would be for personal projects. Is there anything that would hold you back from recommending that combination today? I primarily shoot slow paced street photography, and most of my personal projects will also be a slow paced.
@@ka_sh_iif Not at all. I absolutely loved that combo. The 50R was so incredibly fun to shoot with and that sensor was perfection! Only drawback to the 50mm is that minimum focus distance. It's probably the worst I've ever used in that regard. Wasn't a big deal for me though.
You can solve the problem with close focussing if you attach a HQ close-up lens in front of your GF50mm, which shouldn't be expensive, unlike dedicated extension ring. And if you want to go wide and vintage, and don't wanna bother with circle of confusion, I'd recommend you two things to try: 1) Any mechanical tilt-shift lens made for 35mm film cameras, course those lenses are actually constructed for medium format, so to speak. 2) Any lens made for Hasselblad X-Pan or Fuji TX series of cameras. Same thing, built with medium format in mind, but those are tiny, even tinier than GF50/3,5 adapter included. That being said, I'm subscribed to you AGIN, course YT unsubscribed me from you for some weird reason...
The difference in image quality between the latest full frame camera paired with a nice 35mm prime and the 50R with this lens is probably not much at all to be honest. It really depends on your preferences. As a Fuji APS-C user, the image quality of the 50R and native lenses is on a much higher level compared to something like my X-T1 or X-T2. Personally, I'd rather use the 50R versus something like the Sony A7R IV simply because of how the 50R is designed. I could get technically very similar results with the Sony, but it wouldn't be fun to use. The 50R is all the fun and enjoyment of my Fuji APS-C cameras, but with the image quality inherent of a bigger, higher resolution sensor.
@@KentuckyMan30 the results are great so you are clearly very comfortable with the camera. Also, as a wedding photographer, something that looks quite "beefy" will help to impress your clients no doubt
In my experience wedding clients couldn't care less. Haha. Luckily, I only second shoot weddings and only a handful of times a year. I'd much rather be shooting a house. Ha.
@@KentuckyMan30 by "second shooting" does that mean you are focussed on taking less formal photographs than the "official" photographer? I did that at my niece's wedding. Unfortunately the official photographer's pictures weren't great. She liked mine way more!
Nice review and stunning images Korey! Really love the depth and pop to these photos. How would you rate the AF of the GFX vs your newer XF bodies? I’ve heard that the GFX is several steps behind in that category.
Thank you! As far as the AF is concerned, I actually think the 50R has decent single point performance (I've never used it in continuous mode). I've never used the X-T3 or X-T4, but I'd say it's very comparable to the X-T1 or X-T2 with something like the 35mm f/2. I find it to be quite good for my use.
Haha! I will say, as fun as the 50R is, the barrier for entry is so high if you want to go with native glass. I'm pretty well stuck with the 50mm for quite a while (not complaining though). I may eventually adapt some vintage glass or something. You can get a LOT of great XF kit with the money you drop on a GFX body alone. Also, depends on what you shoot. The X-T4 will be MUCH higher performance as far as autofocus, fps, video, etc. For me though, it's all about that feeling of holding the 50R in my hands and that clunky shutter as it releases (and the sweet images it produces as well).
@@KentuckyMan30 I only shoot my family/kids. Nothing else really matters ... Maybe the odd cityscape or landscape but mostly just the kids. Probably the only thing I would worry about with the gfx is handshake , because it's a bigger sensor shakes and or crappy technique will be even more obvious
I find that with the focal length I use, I'm able to get tack sharp shots at 1/100th-1/125th. That's kind of the slowest shutter speed I'll go. Almost all of my indoor shots in this review were at those shutter speeds and didn't have any issues with camera shake. While you do want to be mindful of it, I think it's kind of overblown to some extent. Seems like to me that the picture that is most often painted is that you'll need to be shooting at something like 1/500th to get a sharp shot because of that "high resolution," but it really isn't the case in my experience (with standard focal lengths at least).
Thx for the swift reply. I am suffering acute GAS 😂 and was considering jumping aboard the MF -ship. I am actually pretty happy with my x cameras though. They are small and fast. All the best!
@@Rios278 Yeah. I've just been shooting the X-T1 and X100T for years now. I loved the GFX, but it was just a toy for me and I needed the money for more important things. Haha.

did you know you can get a kipon speedbooster to mount Pentax 6x7 glass? Gives you and extra 0.7 back in FOV. Yeah, you only have manual focus.. but getting larger than real 645 FOV on a digital sensor would be sick!
It’s right for reportage/travel? Many thanks...
Sure.
nice shots
Can't wait till I get a gfx in 2024 😉😂
Am I missing something or is this lens now double in price? 🙃
These are some nice images and I just subscribed to your channel.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked them!
I may request that from Fuji to try!
this is my only gf lens for a while now and I don't think I need anything else.
I'm in the same boat!
There was a 50R plus this lens special for a total of $3500 last spring, so that's what I'm after ultimately
P.S.: Your photos are really great 🙌
you sir earned a new sub
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
How’s the low light performance on this one ? Not having an ibis and all? Good enough handheld? Ty
Certainly good enough for me. Never have owned a camera with IBIS.
great review, Im thinking to get medium format but still dont understand, is it using the same lens as full frame? or specific dedicated medium format lens?
Haha.
@@KentuckyMan30 ahhh.. maybe same case using APS-C lens to Fullframe, similar crop/vigneting yeah, Thanks a lot!
Thank you! Yeah, I say all the time that our cat looks like a panther. Haha.
Absolutely. More than adequate for that stuff in my opinion.
Amelia Island, Florida
if you had to buy only one lens for this camera what would you get? (that I can afford for now)
I would refer you back to this video. The 50mm 3.5! :D
I did the same, now I am waiting for the 110 to go on sale...
Are you still shooting with this combo? I’m curious to know how it’s holding up in 2022.
Wasn't a big deal for me though.
p.s. you have a very fine family, you are a lucky man.
You can solve the problem with close focussing if you attach a HQ close-up lens in front of your GF50mm, which shouldn't be expensive, unlike dedicated extension ring.
And if you want to go wide and vintage, and don't wanna bother with circle of confusion, I'd recommend you two things to try:
1) Any mechanical tilt-shift lens made for 35mm film cameras, course those lenses are actually constructed for medium format, so to speak.
Remember the F stop is corrected to FF by .78 too, making the the lens a f2.7...not really 3.5.
In terms of depth of field, yes, it's like a 2.7 in 35mm terms. However, the f/stop of the lens is still physically a 3.5.
Is the step up in quality from full frame (35mm equivalent) to this format all that great? I've seen reviews which state there not much in it.
Great camera,I have the Fuji x70 camera aps-c
Make a vid of the gfx at night maybe shoot pics of some houses ,would be sweet to see the night shots
Currently shot with the xt2 , I'm debating whether to upgrade to the xt4 or just say feck it and go with the gfx 50r.
@@KentuckyMan30 thanks for the info buddy. I'll hopefully make my decision soon
Hi there! Are you still using the cam after making the video?
Sold it about a year later.
Haha.
What kind of color correction did you use? Or are this original jpegs? Btw beautiful pictures!
Thank you! I shoot raw and edit in LR.
The color in your Photos is amazing, do you use Classic Negative?
Thanks! I use Classic Chrome and Classic Neg as a "base" when editing.
@@KentuckyMan30 thanks for confirming, your Images are amazing!
