      Honestly! I love her philosophy of letting her kids choose to eat everything on their plates or not - my mom always forced me to eat everything even tho I felt awful usually after a couple of bites - wasn’t till I was an adult and got tested for allergies did she realize I had been complaining because I was allergic & sensitive to most of her staples (lookin at u beef, chicken, salmon, & dozens of others)

    Very nice Emmy! One thing I find that gets my kids to eat unusual or suspect foods is to give it a different name. Brussel sprouts are Dragon's eyes, Salmon is Pterodactyl meat and homemafe raviolis are toad pillows. Its silly I know but it gets them thinking "hmm ive never tried that..." It usually works :D

      +RedChaosify Reviews - While it's definitely not a terrible idea to expand your child's portfolio I definitely think the whole "they should just eat what I feed them!" can be taken to far. I despise brussel sprouts. Not dislike, I get physically nauseous eating them. Yet as a child my parents took that hardline stance of "you're going to eat healthy and you're going to eat it all". Many, many nauseous nights and horrific memories. You should expand your child's view and you can't back off just because they don't love something, but if they truly hate it you need to listen and not be a hard head about it. You wouldn't make an adult eat something they utterly despised, so why should you a child?

    • @1bam159
      @1bam159 6 років тому

      I've heard that a child needs to try something 3 or 5 times (can't remember) before they know if they truly like or dislike it. I don't know if I believe that it's like you said brussel sprouts make you nauseous so why would trying them again and again suddenly make you like them?

    • @xChijouChanx
      @xChijouChanx 6 років тому +3

      I think the best tactic is encouraging a child to try the food, and then backing off if they don't like it
      My mom always told me I should try things (though she never forced me), and if I didn't like it, I didn't have to eat it. My parents weren't picky eaters, and so neither are my brother and I. We are always up for trying new things
      My cousins who had picky eaters for parents, who didn't cook well.... Well, they're ridiculously picky.
      Which is sad. There's so much wonderful food in the world, and I think teaching a child to have an open mind to it is ideal

    I've never agreed with parents making completely different meals for their kids. Kids will judge something based of how it looks, and some won't eat it simply because it's new. My mom had a one bite rule - you had to take one normal sized bite of the food. If you still didn't like it, you didn't have to eat it. (Unless it was desert. You don't have to try that)

    • @dakotasolomon3765
      @dakotasolomon3765 3 роки тому +1

      My mom had the same rule with food I didn't like or didn't wanna eat I had to take at least 1 good bite but I was very stubborn and even if I didn't think it was that bad I still wouldn't eat it even if it wasn't that bad after taking my 1 bite because I usually had already made a kinda big deal about it and would feel stupid if it really wasnt bad lmao

    De-constructed foods of the same thing mom & dad are having for dinner... how many people noticed that? I think it is one of the best ways to not cook separate meals for your kids but not overwhelm them with complex recipes (even not so complex like spaghetti). Along those same lines, I had a scad of very small bowls that fit on the kids' plates, along with the other foods. These bowls could hold sauce to dip the pasta in or ketchup for the fries, tots or meats, a few grapes, apple sauce, etc. It made things fun, kept foods from touching or running around the plate and made some things easier to eat/get on a spoon.

  • @angelia8946
    @angelia8946 6 років тому +90

    Your philosopy on not cooking multiple meals is how we did it! Now my kids will eat almost anything, my 12 year old son begs for sushi. My daughter loves spicy anything. She's 18 though. They've learned to try and eat so many different types of food.

    • @CaseyCam
      @CaseyCam 6 років тому +8

      Angelia my mom was always the same way with us and now I use that mentality with my own kids. She would say "I'm your mother, not a short order cook and you will eat what I serve you!" Sometimes if my kids refuse to eat what I make I want to turn into the Beast and say "Fine! Then go ahead and STAAAAAAARVE!" 😂

    • @taylorcrowbirdie
      @taylorcrowbirdie 6 років тому +3

      I thank mothers everywhere for this philosophy, my mom was like this too and it opened me up to absolutely loving food and cooking myself. I was that kid that absolutely loved brusslesprouts, it started out with my mom always making me eat at least one at dinner to me asking for her to make them LOL

    • @opheliadarkthorn
      @opheliadarkthorn 6 років тому +5

      Same here. Mum NEVER cooked anything different for my brother and I. Looking back, it was always presented in a more fun way... Like heart shaped fried eggs or tomatoes cut in flowery shapes. But that's it. I grew up pretty much eating everything.
      A couple weekends ago, I was having dinner out and I couldn't help but notice this guy, with his 3 year old on his lap, huge plate of tagliatelle seafood in front of him....one fork of food for him, one for the daughter. Its so nice (and dare I say, rare?) seeing children eating food and not nuggets and chips.

    • @angelia8946

      My kids have gone to bed hungry a time or two. If its food that they have a real aversion to, I will give a second option. Or alter a portion of the meal. This has only happened a time or two.

    Yes yes yes! I think parents are sometimes guilty of creating picky eaters. I found that by not making a big deal out of them eating/trying new things....that's exactly what it was....no big deal. They ate what I fixed or maybe a simpler version like you said. If they didn't want the beans they didn't have to eat the beans but I never fixed them a sandwich or a bowl of cereal or anything like that to get out of eating a meal that we were having and I believe that's why I have very adventurous eaters now. They love trying new things and there are very few foods they don't eat. =}

      I think it's a great way to go. Unfortunately, I was the exception to the “if they're hungry, they'll eat" philosophy. I ate a lot of peanut butter and frozen burritos because I'd rather starve to death than eat my mother's cooking... :/

      I have my son try whatever we’re eating for dinner. I usually don’t make a big deal about it, Cause if grandma is eating it he’ll just eat it. Hence I have a child that will eat beets, Brussels spouts, cabbage etc...

    I love that you offer up the same things that you eat, even if deconstructed or without certain things added instead of just the usual kid foods. We do that in our house, and now at 12 my boys enjoy so many things that most of their friends wouldn't in a million years eat, because they were never really offered them as kids. I never minded mine eating the 'normal kid fare' on occasion but I did want them to have introductions to other things early on.

  • @Horticarter41

    These are great! You manage to make the meals healthy and open the kids up to fresh flavors that a lot of parents think their kids wouldn't like. My son loves veggies, fruits of all sorts and even sushi (with actual raw fish) because we started introducing new foods every few months from the time he could eat solid foods. He still has foods he won't eat, every kid does, but they are few and far between. His favorite dinners are steak, with asparagus and roasted red potatoes or broiled salmon with sauteed swiss chard and basmati rice. We recently moved to Germany and he tries everything I put in front of him, including sauerkraut! Good job lady! Your kids have a great mom! ( and a terrifically kind one)

    Ya know, sometimes it's hard to see your favorite UA-camrs are actual people with lives of their own. Seeing that Emmy not only makes videos and edits them, but also cooks three meals a day, and although it wasn't depicted in this video, I'm sure that includes dressing her children for school, cleaning up toys, etc. I'm sure her husband helps out a lot, but this video was just a great reminder that Emmy really is a great person all around!

    Emmy I truly love the inspiration you give me watching your videos!! I'm a new grandmother, I was a young mom and wife and my beautiful grandson is now 4mo old. I am his full time caretaker and he's just so amazing! Let me tell you starting completely over after 17yrs, (my youngest son now 18) was NOT easy and sometimes it still isn't!! However, my point is I've started over and I'm going to start making his food, I mean everything from cereal to all his meals from here on out. Do you have any suggestions you can give me to make things easier for when I do start? That's really the only concern I have is how hard is this really going to be and will I still have time to take care of him and my husband and family.... I've been catching up on my nutrition homework and all for baby. I appreciate any advice! Much love to you and yours 😊❤️🙏🏽

    Thank you so much Emmy! I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel. I am a young mother of a 3 year old and wife of five years to a man who is a very picky eater. As oblate, my daughter has also been very picky with her foods just like daddy. I am completely opposite, I am always open to try new foods. I love almost every kind of food at least that I've tried. So meal times for the three of us can be extremely stressful. Often times I am the only one eating home cooked fresh food (sometimes I share the meals with our furry friend if it happens to be a dog friendly meal) but my family doesn't usually want to try new things. They have a handful of meals they enjoy and will only eat those. What should I do to help bring our dinners together again?
    Thank you for posting such wonderful content I love your watch eatin and fruity fruit videos most. It is refreshing to see someone enjoy such a wide variety of foods. You have definitely given me some ideas for things I need to try!!

    My boys are 4 and 2 and are similarly typical children. They call my meals gucky (funny that it's the same word!) and I usually tell them they need to try at least one bite. I also remind them that it's dinner time or bedtime! So that helps. And as a last resort, I hold bedtime snack hostage (snack is usually something they like like 1/2 banana, a peanut butter sandwich etc. which they have while we read books) and say "if you don't eat some of your dinner now then it will be your even guckier, cold bedtime snack). And they definitely understand that trying a few warm bites and getting a yummy snack is a better choice!

    Children are wonderful at teaching the adults in their lives about priorities and how to cover the main concerns and stop "sweating the small stuff". They eat when they're hungry... and if all parents provided the balance you do it would make many families happier... Good video... ty

    My parents never made a separate meal for us kids. What they make for dinner is what was made for dinner and if you didn’t like it then you were welcome to make yourself a peanut butter sandwich instead.

    Here here! We give the kids exactly what we eat. We don't indulge in the American meals of chicken nuggets, fries, pizza diet. When my kids turn their nose up to something I tell them, "somewhere right now, a kid is eating cow eyeball soup". Food is relative.

  • @momof2momof2

    Good food for healthy children. We always gave our children everything, and if after trying it, they didn't like it then fine, but there was always plenty of other choices, so I knew over the course of a week that they had gotten all the nutrition they needed, Kids are funny... our daughter was eating tossed salad when she was a baby, but our son didn't like it until he was a teen.

    I Love that where I live I have so many affordable places to shop. All these food service places are too expensive compared to what I can buy groceries for! I can feed my whole family of 4 on $10 a day not just $10 per person per meal!!

    I commend you, great job! When raising my kids I discovered how odd it was for children to enjoy vegetables from friends. My husband traveled a lot for work. Those times I would take the kids to shop for dinner, and we would each pick one or two favorite vegetables. Even the then 2 year old. Fresh beets, corn, raw radishes, celery, celery root, potatoes or yams, etc. No meat. Fruit and cheese for dessert. Until my friends weighed in, I never realized most kids did not voluntarily eat like that😆.
