- The history of color film was competitive and dates back to the 19th century, many experiments have been done but only Technicolor drove the technology forward enough beating its rivals to create the first stable image.
Technicolor was a company that not alone changed the world but this is also how Technicolor changed movies.

This is really helpful! All of the other videos about this are 15-20 minutes long and don't get to the point, but yours is fast and informative while still being well made. Thanks for the great video!
I know right, I super condense videos, they tend to take a while because of scripting them and narrowing it all down to a bite size. I've got a few more planned recently. Just need to get editing! I'm also planning on having a few longer ones as well.

This video seems to mix two different things. First, Technicolor was first a two-color system before the firm Technicolor managed to develop the three strip process. It was still Technicolor, but the process name was first "Process 2" and then "Process 3" (check the Wikipedia, or Technicolor's archive at George Eastman House's website). Their two-color system was not sore to the eye, but it lacked a certain chunk of the natural color palette (e.g., blue) - like the previous Kinemacolor process. So the clips you're showing after 0:51 are filmed with Technicolor 2 process. This film, The Toll of the Sea (1922) was massive success even if prints had warping/alignment problems.
And then, filming three-strip Technicolor was a fully different thing than making Technicolor (positive) prints for theaters. Last films with three-strip cameras were made at the end of the 1950s. So Godfather II (1974) was not shot on Technicolor, but it was few of the last well known films that had Technicolor dye-transfer prints made for its theatrical release (at least in USA and Europe). Other well-known films were Star Wars: New Hope and Suspiria.
You could have made Technicolor prints from any color negative, like from far more budget friendly Eastmancolor film negative. So there's few different things Technicolor!
People often mistakenly use the term "Technicolor" as the process of colorizing of a movie that was originally filmed in B&W (like Ted Turner did back in the 80s). Technicolor and colorization are two different things.

Old movies are so special, they have such great emotions and flow, sometimes they feel a little more angelic and unattainable, like they were made by a divine being, haha. Plus there's so much to choose from! What's your favourite?

I know this is old but still wanted to comment. I’ve been interested in this topic since I watched phantom of the opera from 1925. It had a color scene where it was all red and I wondered why they could only do one. Very recently I watched the mystery of the wax museum and I looked up to see if it was originally in color. It came out in 1933 so the fact that it had color made me think that it had been added years later. But when I looked it up the wiki page said it was two color technicolor. I kept watching and realized there wasn’t any blue. You said in this video that they had a hard time doing blue. I’m going to keep looking into this but I would be interested in knowing why blue was so difficult if you know why. This was a good video btw, thank you.
