I've had a box of these that were 14 years old. Everything was eatible. The fig bars were brown, the mains were a little dried up but by adding hot water they hydrated up andwere nice and warm. These will get the job done, nothing fantasy very basic. Worth the money considering each case has 10 bags or 10 days worth of food.
A good way to get old/stale tasting pop tarts to taste better. Has to be the UNFROSTED variety, but place them on a microwave safe plate and microwave on high for 10-15 seconds, or until warm. Spread a little bit of butter, NOT MARGARINE, on them and eat while warm.
Exactly. If the SHTF a great bottle of hot sauce will be worth allot of money as even the worse food is allot more palatable! I saw a guy @ NASCAR one time with a hot sauce holster, brilliant!
I think you should have said Humanitalian rations just to piss the people off who complained before! haha! Another great review brother! Much respect from Indiana
Agree with your assessments, got a case of these I've been going through, I have to say, all of the rice, lentils, and beans (black eyed peas generally) are always cooked to absolute perfection in every single main. Similar to MRE's, which despite their hate, are always cooked incredibly consistently and thus are reliable every time, these HDR meals are packed full of value. I'm in the kitchen all the time and still can't get my lentil or bean dishes to ever taste as good as Uncle Sam's Good Samaritan Meals to Go, aka the MRE and HDR meals. It pretty much entirely comes down to the texture and longevity of the end product, and these have both! Disclaimer: Hot sauce or spice of some sort is always used by me to make most HDR meals more flavorful. Given the use case of the HDRs the flavor makes sense, as you want people of all ages in aid to be fine eating it. Like you said, Tobasco sauce is the gold standard, and having your own bottle around is good for any camping trip if you aren't lucky and blessed with one of the small ones as a surprise. TLDR: HDR's teach you how to prepare lentils to save lives
Have you watched the finale of How To With John Wilson? I thought it was really good as he talked about self-preservation or the lack thereof. Nice review!
I actually like these. 30 dollars gets you 20000 calories. Three dollars for a day of food. As far as emergency food options goes these are very efficient and cost effective for prepping, and while bland they are palatable to just about everyone.
Having used of these these on a camping trip recently. Boiled them in pouch. I was pleasantly surprised and bought 2 more cases. You really cannot beat the price. I brought a mix of these and Apack MREs. I ended up preferring the HDRs. Barley Stew - Fantastic with red pepper flakes, was already nicely salted for my taste. Lentil Stew - Pretty good, bland. Needed salt, pepper, hot sauce. Peas in Tomato Sauce - Pretty good. Didn't add salt. Rice with beans - My least favorite. Just boring. Red pepper flakes, pepper, and hot sauce helped. The vegetable crackers are really my favorite MRE cracker. The cookies are fine. The poptarts are just poptarts but improved by using the strawberry jam. Everything was filling and the extra fiber was really appreciated. Definitely enough calories to keep me going while hiking, fishing, and chopping wood. I wish they included tea bags or coffee. The limited menu will get boring quick.
Lentils, beans, and potatoes are very common in many parts of the world. Those items would seem normal for many people in disaster zones. That's why they make them the way they do
I don't mind these but man, I've got a few cases and don't know what to do with them, other than keep them handy just in case. I always bring other rations out for hikes, and these are definitely last on my list to consider.
With all due respect, that’s why people buy them for emergency food storage. MRE’s and these are fun to eat with your kids! Just keep in mind that the salt content will be HIGH unless you get the ones that say LOW sodium.
@@SmittyMRE 🤣🤣 It’s amazing how food with enough salt to kill a horse can taste so bland. Edit. I didn’t notice your handle when I responded. 🤣 Which US MRE pack is your favorite? A, B etc.?
@@ryanjofre Haha, all good, man. Someone suggested a challenge to live on these things for a week, but I'm not about to do that until I have to do that ;) Ah, that's a tough choice. There are some serious winners and loser (IMO) in both and they've balanced them out nicely, the 2024 B pack is probably taking the cake what with Beef Patty, Burrito Bowl, Pork Sausage Patty, Italian Sausage, and Goulash being dang good. Got a fav!?
Hey, ate one whole one, and was pretty good. However, later, trying the rice and beans pack, the rice was very staunch and needed chewing. Flavor? Not bad at all. Rice and Pop Tarts, not their best gift to the MRE world of efficient survival foods.
What is the purpose of the matches? Are they so the recipient can light up a nice cigar after their meal? Makes no sense to me. Also the same thing with regular MREs. Seems like a waste of money.
@@deidyomega yes, that I remember. But much of the food you don’t exactly need to warm. But there’s nothing wrong with using the matches to go make yourself a hot meal.
@@ReadinessRations they’re legumes. Not my favorite but I’m not adverse to them. The cooked beans that I’ve accidentally had one or two of in canned minestrone soup seem to just have a disgusting, mealy, blandness. I’ve had single beans a few times by mistake, but I could never tolerate a whole meal of them. Can’t have them in chili, canned in any way, fresh- I simply would rather starve or eat bugs than eat beans
It's free food that's high in calories and shelf stable for people that may be starving to death. If they are, this is exactly the type of food that they need.
Actually guys, I get it, sugar in such cases can be useful - just not so much of it. Americans have a sugar rich diet that does not necessarily translate well to a middle Eastern / Asian diet. Sorry for any offense caused.
This is great (in text) until you end up in that situation in a bit of bad luck, and then you'll complain. Politics make a lot of people double standard out loud.
Bland, not disgusting. They're fine, you'll just wish you had something better. The lentil stew is the worst part for me, because it's in every meal while the second side changes each menu.

@@speedyz28 yeah. Some of the fruit flavors along with Brown Sugar & Cinnamon come in Frosted & Unfrosted varieties.
