  • Henna tattoos have been described as the must-try beauty trend this festival season. However, women have adorned their bodies with this plant-based dye for centuries, across several cultures. In this installment of Hannahgram, Hannah Bronfman caught up with henna tattoo artist Zahra Virji to learn why this international practice has exploded in popularity all over the US and find out what you need to know before incorporating the intricate process into your beauty routine.

I wore henna in class when I was 5 cause I went to a wedding on the weekend. Kids laughed and pointed and called me gross. Again when I was 14 my teacher called me out and wrote me up because I drew ugly marks with "orange marker" on my hands. It was designer henna by my aunt... I had to explain that. Then she later was like "oooh I'm sorry". Today in 2016, everyone any their mom have henna done all the time. And the stigma of actual Muslims/Hindus/desi girls having henna done will never be felt. A ton of my friends have similar stories. I hope this explains why people get offended. You can't take the part of the culture you enjoy and leave out the stigma around it. Why is it cute for white women to be "cultural" but gross for actual cultures. Why was coconut oil in Indian girls' hair made fun of but now it's the trend? #unfair

I love Mehendi and I do it for my white friends all the time. I don't care if anyone wears henna now btw* just explaining the side that doesn't really get heard.

+Mariam L (mariamxo15) i *sometimes* get henna in the summer. every since around 9 months ago, i started worrying about other peoples' cultures, and how white people use them for "fashion". i was wondering if i could use henna in the summer? id like to , but i feel its just cultural appropriation and i don't want to be a hypocrite.
      thanks for reading!

+Mariam L (mariamxo15) but that is individual experiences..you cant expect everyone to not do something because something YOU went through. In third grade my teacher was Indian, and would teach us about it, she would bring is her saris and give us henna tattoos. It was always so fun to learn about other cultures. so for me i do not do it to be offensive, and for someone who has had totally different experiences it is unfair to be offended by strangers over something some assholes did to you. (by you I dont just mean YOU, i mean anyone else)

+Sammy In your case, it was okay for you and your classmates to wear henna tattoos in that situation because your teacher (i.e. someone who is a part of the Indian culture) INVITED you to experience her culture. She gave you CONSENT to wear henna AND it was obviously for educational purposes. I think +Mariam L (mariamxo15) has the right to be upset about this because she witnesses people outside her culture stealing and using henna strictly for fashion purposes, without knowing or even caring about the cultural significance it bears.
So yes, learning about other cultures is fun, but most people who wear henna as an accessory don't seem to care about the people who created it.

in some cultures, when a bride applies henna for her wedding, it's believed that if the color is really dark your husband loves you very much
the darker the color the prettier it is considered

It's Henna not Hannah Tattoos. What a way to westernize the tradition! Even if its a pun for the name Hannah Bronfman...you should keep the original spelling.

I don't think getting henna done would ever make someone think you were disrespectful of Indian culture, but misspelling it as HANNAH sure will.
