I believe that the cameramen are enlisted sailors. Every landing is recorded for training or investigating mishaps. On modern ships, there’s a room with a panoramic window on the island where the camera operator can pivot to follow the aircraft. On the Ford class the cameraman has been replaced with an automated camera system.

26 year career on 6 different ships. Here's what I've seen. 2 people run over by towed aircraft. 1 barricade trap of an S3 with defective NLG. 1 collapsed right MLG on an F18. 3 aircraft lost during sortie, 9 souls. 1 Harrier crash into ocean beside the ship due to improper landing technique, pilot ejected and recovered. 1 AIM9 dislodged during cat stroke. 1 flare dislodged during recovery. 2 tow tractors and a Tennant scrubber lost over the side. 1 E2 recovered far right of centerline clipping 2 helos and an A6 refuel probe. 1 C2 ramp strike resulting in significant tail section damage, but aircraft recovered with no injuries. 3 crewmen blown over the side, 2 were recovered, 1 lost at sea. 1 partial hand loss due to catapult taking tension while hand was on launch bar. Probably more than 100 aircraft towing crunches.
I know I’m not being nuanced but you’d think the most powerful/best equipped/experienced navy in the world wouldn’t have these problems anymore
@@haydnw869 It's a very complex high tempo environment. I don't think there can ever be perfect safety. You can be doing everything perfectly when the ship takes a roll and stuff trades paint.

@@michaelmappin4425 yeah that’s why I’m looking forward to ai assisted landings, now yes at first it’s not going to be perfect or even reliable but if you lose an aircraft with a human pilot you lose millions of dollars and years of pilot experience, if you lose an aircraft with an AI pilot you still lose millions of dollars but all the experience is saved
@@haydnw869 You should see the others, the Russian carrier Admiral Kuznetsov regularly catches fire, breaks down, emits cancerous fumes and last time I heard, the floating drydock that was carrying the carrier sank in shallow water causing a massive crane to fall onto the ship leaving a 19 metre hole on the flight deck.
I was on a Carrier one day, cruising the Atlantic off the coast. Normal flight ops, close to port, a cherry cruise. We picked up a distress call. Light civilian aircraft, lost over the sea and running low on fuel. We could figure out which way he was and told him to head south as we turned to head north as fast as we could make it. We picked him up on Radar, and it was easy to see there was no way they would be able to make it back to land with the fuel they had left. We turned into the wind, set up the barricade and took him through the steps for landing on a carrier into the net. Amazingly we had settings for a craft that light. I never saw an aircraft come in so slowly. Seemed like a leaf floating in on the wind. So slow. I was so used to jets screaming down the deck throwing flame and roaring in protest at being stopped. The guy came down well and was swallowed up in the barricade. Banged his plane up a bit, bent his prop a bit but it wrapped them all up nice and safe and gently slowed them to a stop. Assigned the family some rooms after they cleared medical and introduced them to life aboard a carrier and how to stay safe and healthy here while on their unexpected ocean cruise. Held a party for them that night. Gave the pilot his Navy Wings for making a successful carrier landing. Fixed up his plane and eventually took them back to port. Im certain that was a memory for them all. Nothing will replace the barricade.
This should have come up on the news, that's quite a story! I have the whole Atlantic in front of me, as I live in Lisbon. What type of aircraft was it? If it was some single engine Cessna she was capable of doing about 70 knots IAS on Final. If the Carrier was making close to 30, no wonder her approach seemed so slow...

@@duartesimoes508 I am afraid it is a dated memory. Yes, it was a light aircraft. Im unsure of what model holds what, but a Cessna would be in that class if it could hold a small family. It was about... 1970? 71? Ah, no. '80, '81. Some time around there. It was the USS America. The Pig. CV66. Home port at Norfolk, VA.
I do not think the aircraft would have been allowed to fly off. Never even considered it. No way to take that chance. Once we held it it was not going to fly off again from our decks. Too dangerous. No training or experience. No appropriate tie down points. No cats capable of not ripping it to pieces. Some of the smaller aircraft we had were several times heavier than that craft and they often went airborne sideways. All we needed was to find the news not that we rescued them, but killed them. No. Stuff the thing in the hanger and lift it down nice and gently with a crane once we hit dock. Move it to the runway with no problem. They can take off in familiar circumstance.
There is quite a lot that happens at sea you dont hear about. Best air show you will ever see. Imagine the aircraft coming in at mach speeds, the pressure bubble rippling, the blast hitting, ripping your clothes from the impact of sonic boom. Imagine looking up at the mast and seeing the colors struck, the Jolly Roger raised in its place. You look over the fleet with the Big Eyes and find the Jolly Roger being raised all around. Imagine running the Gauntlet, the rows hammering you with cut fire hoses, crawling across the non-skid decks on bloody knees, meeting Lord Poseidon and wife... the queen, and their baby, the fattest guy on the ship who wants your damn attention. Imagine swimming through garbage to escape the events and what rags are left of your clothing hosed down with salt water as you strip the worthless things away and throw the rags over the side. Imagine the Russians looking at a fully armed nuclear armada under the Jolly Roger, denying any allegiance to any nation and consider the answer before congress when asked if any US flagged Navy ship has ever practiced hazing. No. Never. Imagine a drunk sailor in Sicily being an obnoxious jackass in a drug store protected by mafia muscle. Imagine the sailor in the hospital, its two more days before we hear they think he will survive the beating. Imagine the frustration as the admiralty finds only a justice system owned and operated with no chance of finding justice. Imagine the Admiral telling the captain "Take care of it". Imagine the captain telling the XO "Take care of it". Imagine the XO telling the division officer "Take care of it". Imagine the Division Officer turning to the sailors shipmates and telling the crew "Take care of it". Imagine that store slowly filling with sailors. Finally just one old woman left and a very young boy of perhaps four years old. Imagine a sailor "Please, Per Favore. Grazie Nonna. Come, come, please", as he opens the door, gesturing for the last of the innocent to leave, the police on the corner, eyes opening wide at seeing the care afforded grandmother as the door closed behind them. The blinds closed, the door locked as the sailor looks out to see the Police on the corner, a grin as huge as a Cheshire Cat covering his face looking you in the eye. He stands now between the grandmother who speaks to another officer and the door, blocking the innocent from what he sees is about to unfold. The police there arent allowed to interfere with with family business. Imagine we had business to discuss with the family, and found their messenger. It would be days before they learned if the heavies would live. The heavies and the owner were thrown through the front windows when rag dolls, the shelves stripped. The store burnt to ground. The crew stepping out and strolled calmly away in all directions. Sirens in the distance. The police pull the heavies and the owner away from the flaming building. Imagine spending the rest of the week in that town, unable to purchase a meal, buy a drink. Its all on the house. No money needed the rest of the week. They hate the mob. The local gangs disappeared back into their holes, afraid to come out again till the fleet left. The heavies disappeared to make sure there was no more "misunderstandings". Crime plummets to zero. The entire city becomes one vast party. Imagine some bean counter back in an office some place deciding this guy owes payment for the rescue. Wonder how many millions that would be worth? We were happy to help. They were glad to find us. Again and again. Maybe I'll tell you about the Red Brigade some time. Hell, how was I to know that thats what the sign said. Roso, must be Red... something something Vino..WINE! Free wine! At the Roso something community party? A Block Party with FREE WINE! Yah... got it! Saw the signs all the way there. The Gut. It wasnt till I heard the speaker that I understood. There under the giant red sign, in a large square packed shoulder to shoulder with locals. Something familiar about the cadence, the manner of speech. I heard that before. I heard that... HITLER! HE spoke like that at his huge public gatherings! I stopped, grabbed by buddy. The sign now made sense: Free wine with the Communist Party and the Red Brigade (They had a hobby of blowing Americans kneecaps off at the time)! The guy at the podium now pointing at us and screaming American! American! Leaving was... interesting. Kind of like tunneling, ya know? As we tore around the corner back at the docks it seems they heard the riot behind us. READY! First row of marines kneels. AIM! Weapons aimed. Second row stands behind, weapons aimed The officer about to shout fire as we raise our ID cards, cutting through the passage in the ranks at a full run and the riot turns the corner behind us... and immediately melts into a hundred random guys wandering this way or that minding their own business as soon as they see the arsenal they are facing. An officer whose every detail screamed he is not an officer of the US Navy was so happy to see us, and sat down with a very large book of photos to see if we recognized anybody at the party. The United States Navy. Many hate us. Many more absolutely love us. A LOT you dont hear about. I simply cannot begin to explain.

The most horrible stench I ever felt was from one single rotten egg. It fell on the floor liberating the Devil inside that attacked me like a rotten corpse, and I threw out instantly. Then I chain-smoked some five cigarettes and took more than one hour to recover. Eggs have proteins, so it's very much like flesh decaying. Beware!

When your adrenaline is pumping and you are I fear for your life, you will doing incredible things. Where he was, had he not jumped the wire twice, he would have lost his legs.
There is a story about a Harrier, doing a vertical landing without a front wheel.
The pilot noticed before landing, so the deck crew brought out a stool.
What happened to the stool?

I was flight deck crew, and a Plankowner, of the USS Carl Vinson CVN-70, for 14 months. I seen an A-7 Corsair II, crash and burn on the deck, and A-6 Intruder with hung ordanance several times and a one throw a bomb down the deck, A C-2 Greyhound land and have it's wheel come off the landing gear and bounce down the deck, one F-14 Tomcatt lose it's landing hook on the arresting wire but it was proper landing which means it lands on the deck at full power and was able to lift off. We were operating off the Virgina Capes and it was able to return to land. Go Navy!
Our F-14 lost it's tail hook and went to full-power(FULL burner), but the RIO pulled the ejection handles. The aircrew survived but we lost the jet. We stopped in Bahrain about a week later and they bought all the enlisted people beer(s).
Holy heck, this footage was sobering! Some of those brave men got up that morning, not knowing they wouldn't be waking up tomorrow.

I saw many aircraft accidents from my GQ station on the bridge. One day we launched 2 F4 Phantoms of catapult 1 and 3 almost simultaneously. The F4 on #1 cat had a bridal slap on his external belly tank causing a fire. The Air Boss said Phantom of the bow eject, eject. Next thing I saw 4 parachute s in the air as both planes ejected
What an ignominious end to TWO Rhinos! And to the Air Boss' career!

Bit of a spoiler alert here, but not too much; a neat aspect of the recently released "Top Gun: Maverick" is the film's depiction of the use of a barricade on an aircraft carrier. When watching the movie (for the first time) and the scene was happening, I thought it was great that they showed a barricade being used as I openly announced (to myself mostly,) "Yeup! That's a real thing!"
I also liked the up close and personal view of how a catapult launch was done. I spent more than 5 years on the USS Midway and never figured out how it was done.
@@richinoregon for sure, the new opening sequence is incredible. Not only does it give a more detailed look at launching aircraft but it's also a great callback to the original opening sequence of the first movie.

I have some photos of Blackburn Bucaneers hitting the nets, when my stepdad was serving on HMS Victorious, amazing pictures of the hook missing the wire or bouncing up and ending up in the nets.

We had a S3 land right of the center line and took the refueling probe. That was so much fun to clean up. Never seen a crew bail out of a F14 so fast on the way to the edge of the ship they grabbed a deck hand on the way.
We lost an F-14 because the tail hook broke off. I had just gone below deck - I only heard the arresting gear pistons go about half-way through is full cycle, heard several metallic thuds, people yelling, ship turning hard, and me pushing everybody down out of the catwalk hatch close to the crane back inside. Yes...danger, unsafe, only for brave people. No sissies allowed.

Wow, I used to question why droptanks and napalm bombs looked similar in the past. They ARE the same reused tank!
The A-6E at night barricade trap was flown by Capt. RAND McNally callsign "Atlas" with VMA(AW)-121. He later transferred to the Navy when the Marines got rid of their A-6's. He was in my squadron VA-304 when they were preparing for the upcoming CQ's on the USS Constellation in the Spring of 1994. He lost control of the aircraft in the break at NAS Alameda, CA and both him and his BN chose to ride the plane a bit further so the plane did not hit some sailboats that always raced at the end of the runway. By doing this, when they ejected, it was to late. Both hit the water in their ejection seats and died. LCDR Rand "Atlas" McNally and LCDR Brian "Sluggo" McMahon both died in this incident. The investigation later said it was pilot error, but a few months later we had a plane going into the break at NAS Lemoore, CA experience the same uncommanded flight and rolls. They recovered from this because they were higher in the break at Lemoore. I was on the repair team sent down. When we put hydraulic pressure on the plane, the whole keel of the plane starting pouring hydraulic fluid out of it. I found the problem as I was the one in the cockpit operating the controls. On a break I was leaning against the fuselage while standing on the wing. They slowly applied hydraulic pressure to check something else when I heard a noise (didn't have my cranial on, oops). It was coming from the chimney area. A square area that went through the fuel cell that allowed hydraulic lines, wires, and flight controls to pass through. The hydraulic pressure side hydraulic libe going to the flaperon had a crack in it and hydraulic fluid was pouring out at 2k PSI. Which drained the flight side hydraulic reservoir really fast. Which caused the loss of control. The second crew used the electrical back up system to land the plane.
Just yesterday I went to the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Nowra where I used to work and saw some of the same aircraft and footage there. On one video there was a statistic that 1 in 10 landings resulted in some sort of accident. There was also a clip of a Skyhawk doing a nosedive right on take off which then went under the ship and somehow popped up behind the stern and the pilot survived. Another clip showed a carrier deck during the Korean War covered in ice, as if it wasn't dangerous enough already. There was also a video clip showing helicopter landings on frigates which have a much smaller deck to land on, which can quickly go up and down 30 to 40 feet while also rolling.

0:20 Incredibly, this was not a fatal accident. The pilot only suffered a small burn on his hand.
According to the training I received in the Navy the most dangerous place for a sailor to be is on the highway. More sailors died on the highway in WWII than by enemy action. But back then they didn't have seat belts and airbags, so I don't know if that statistic still holds true.
