I'm proud to announce that the Caliola is playing again after a two-year hiatus and it was actually playing this roll yesterday! 0:00 "There's A Tavern in the Town" 0:10 "How Dry I Am" 0:48 "The Stein Song" 2:42 "A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" 3:55 "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow"
I go to Idlewild every summer, and I can say without exaggeration that this carousel needs work! It seems that the main thing the park's concerned about is keeping the Caliola playing and in tune. In the most recent season, the Caliola sounded amazing, and I was amazed by how well it holds up its tuning! Unfortunately most of the rolls are deteriorating, so they need to buy some new rolls. The other organ (the Artizan, shown in the video) needs major work and many horses are missing legs!
@bimjales You better believe i'm a "retro" person! In fact, i prefer vinyl records, player pianos, and band organs to my iPod, I love wooden rollercoasters, vintage amusement rides, carousels, etc.
0:00 ending to "There's A Tavern in the Town", 0:10 starts "How Dry I Am", 0:48 March(?) 2:42 "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" 3:54 "For He's A Jolly-Good Fellow!"
@lilybelle20000 The first song is "How Dry I Am" Don't know the second one. The third one is "Hot time in the Old Town Tonight" The fourth one is "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow"
this is awesome, i used to go to idewild park all the time as a kid, around the same time in the early 90s, i grew up in pittsburgh pa. my family liked idewild park because it wasnt nearly as crowded as kennywood park
@retrochad I'm the same way. I later found out that all carousels are suspended from a center platform cuz they need room for the poles of the "jumping" horses and the band organs are controlled by paper rolls. Infact, when you hitch a ride on this marvelous machine, you can see they have stacks of rolls in their boxes.
While the machinery is interesting, and when I was that age I was always looking at that as well. Now I find the intricacy of craftsmanship that went into the horses to be fascinating.

The song (the second one, not counting the small snippet of a song at the beggining), is "Stein Song".

I have a few videos of this carousel, I'll post them and i'll take some more next summer!
@retrochad The organ was actually playing the same roll the last time i was at idlewild in September
That's what I was most interested in, what kind of machinery/motor was in there making it work, how the organ worked, etc.
This carousel looks pretty similar to the way it looks today.
very rare today
I used to like carousels, but I've gotten too big now so I can't climb over the horses.
@bimjales As a kid, i was always the same way too!
Such a shame they switched to canned music. I miss the sound of that Caliola!
i used to like those!
did u know when idlewild was built a long time ago well it got flooded but now its back in shape yay!!!!!!!!11
