In her autobiography, GV writes that she wanted to sing the final note of this aria pianissimo as directed by Puccini, but she was told that the Italian audiences expected a fortissimo. She decided to hold the note pianissimo and only at the very end to crescendo to a fortissimo. She was told that the effect in the opera house was like that of a whistling train emerging from a tunnel.

What a joy to hear this in correct score pitch. Almost all other UA-cam postings are transferred a half tone too high. ANY singer (even The Great Ones) sounds terrible when his/her voice is played back faster than it was recorded. If you can't get the pitch right (this post is perfect), DON'T POST. You're only doing singers a horrible disservice.
If his nerves had been stronger and would have sustained a fully flighted international career, would Corelli have been regarded as "Caruso's Heir" after the untimely death of Björling? I think so. He was truly magnificent.
Bob Smth, Zacaria was more than passable,compare him to someone Climbming Everest he was just reaching the Summit,just a few feet from the top just failing to be able to plant a flag.But my G-D he was excellent,no comparison to today's would be.This is only the opinion of a person who has loved Opera most of his time on this Planet. I really hated the continuous change of tempi - and such fast to slow extremes. Toady's audiences want more realism in opera, and that usually means a faster tempo to mirror actual emotions. But some of the slow tempi were actually interesting if I could hear it in its entirety.
As usual, Vishnevskaya sings with an old woman's timbre and exaggerated phrasing. Как и обычно, у Вишневской "старушечий" тембр и неделикатная утрированная фразировка.
Не слышу ничего старушечьего, но техника у неё не самая лучшая, хотя именно здесь голос изумительно звучит. Тогда многие утрировали, включая Корелли. Другая манера пения была, очевидно.

Демидова долго отнекивалась, тк дружит с Маквалой , а Маквала дружила с Образцовой. Хотя Демидова постоянно на своих поэтических вечерах использует бахиану в исполнении Вишневской.
