    Hey Arun. Thanks this was helpful. I'm considering applying to a university where the topic is not specified and students are not allowed to talk to supervisors pre application and the committee will choose the supervisors themselves. Since this is a scholarship too, I'm nervous because the only things they asked for are cv, research proposal and covering letter. The advice on writing these is varied and they have not given any formats. Do you have any samples of accepted proposals or documents etc?

    Hey! Thanks for all the great tips :) I'm just starting my masters in glasgow studying research methods in psychology..hopefully going onto a phd afterwards so this was really helpful :) I am just wondering when did apply for a phd? I am just not sure whether I should be applying during my masters or straight afterwards? Also did you have to apply for funding separately? Thanks :) x

    Hi Arun, this was incredibly useful - thanks! I am going to speak to the studentship main contact about the proposal in a couple of days and am pretty nervous at the whole prospect of not being a successful applicant because the studentship is in my field and of great interest to me. Moreover, the research is to be conducted in the city in which I reside. It's like it was put together for me and the thought of losing out to someone else makes me feel horrible inside. Any tips on how to overcome this? Its one interview if the proposal is accepted

      Arun - thank you so much for such an informative and helpful reply! I most definitely will be taking everything you said, on board. I feel reassured now and more focussed. I have two weeks before the proposal deadline so am going to research the life out of the topic. I'll keep you posted on whether I've been accepted. Hope your research is going well and all the best with everything you do!Halima

      +Arun Verma hi again! I stumbled across your video again while searching for something phd related. Just a quick update..I was unsuccessful at the interview, having narrowly missed out against someone with more quantitative experience. However, a couple of months later, they contacted me, offering a studentship in my home city that aligns with my interests; it's worked out just perfectly! Thanks for taking an interest in my little story and hope your PhD is going well for you!

    Thank you for your valuable information and my questions are, 1. I heard some full funded scholarships for PhD in Uk for an Indian student so is that true? 2.what after PhD?. Please reply . Thanks in advance.

      Yes there are some funded PhD studentships for specific countries and most universities will advertise these funding opportunities but you have to speak to the prospective supervisor about these. Once you have finished your PhD then opportunities can open up in and out of academia - but the focus is to complete the PhD first :)

    Hello Arun. Greetings from Trinidad and Tobago. A Professor in Psychology has indicated that he would like to supervise my project. I sent him a proposal. From his last email he told me that he will assist me in applying for funding and his research team is formalizing and confirming my supervisory team. Is this a positive sign?

    • @dr-arunverma
      @dr-arunverma  5 років тому

      HI stefan, yes that sounds very positive! It's worth asking about funding too!

    Hello,
    Your videos are very helpful. I would like to seek your advice regarding switiching to a different research area and graduate program. I am currently in the third year of my graduate program. Because of multiple unforseen circumstances we had to change the project direction into a completely different area that is not of my interest and expertise. I am looking to change my reasearch area back to biosciences, in which I am a post graduate in. I am feeling extremely stuck in my career as I did some research and found negative thoughts about switching a PhD program after two years. Is it impossible to start afresh with a new PhD program?? I really want to do a PhD in the area of biosciences. I have never been more motivated but finding a position seems difficult and I feel very depressed with the possibility that my PhD dreams might come to an end. Kindly guide on this.

    • @dr-arunverma
      @dr-arunverma  3 роки тому

      I'm sorry to hear about your news, it seems like you are quite far into the programme so switching to a new programme could be difficult. Your supervisor and/or a monitoring committee (external to your supervisors) should be able to advise. However, if this really isn't the right programme you can start looking for other studentships in your preferred area of interest. I hope this helps a little. All the best in your search.

    my supervisor liked my proposal and is reviewing the abstract now. She seems positive about it but as a backup should i be applying and contacting other universities too or wait to see what happens with this one? Is it ethical in Uk for me to maybe contact students under her to find out more?

    • @dr-arunverma
      @dr-arunverma  3 роки тому

      Hi! That's great - so long as you haven't submitted the proposal to a research grant (i.e. ESRC) you can share your proposal with suitable supervisors. Hiwever, it's always worth checking in with your supervisor to to get advice on who in the field might be a suitable supervisor. This individual might know another professor or lecturer that could help you too.

      I would definitely speak with current PhD students in the department to understand their experiences and learn how they are getting on. It's important to study somewhere you feel comfortable - and academic staff should encourage this too.
