    Certainly others may feel differently but for me, this was one of the best videos ever with the possible exception of a cat overboard episode. Thank you.

    Beautiful 😍
    Having Tim as captain felt like Jamie times two. Two peas from the same pod. Even your humor is on par. I absolutely loved the outing. As far as a way of life, no.
    I hope Liz is well.

    I ran across narrow boats several years ago when i saw silver foxes videos. i never knew that the UK had all those canals and how spectacular the country side looks as no one talks about that at least here in the US. We just shown all the big cities and royal family etc. But this is so fascinating to me. We have lots of canals and rivers in the US but you never hear of narrow boats. You do see trawlers and cabin cruisers doing the Great Loop in the US though. Any how it is great to see the other part of the UK and those old smaller towns that are still around, oh and some old castles or ruins of castles. You and Liz may not want to buy and live on a boat forever, but maybe just for a season so that you two can do something different as Liz says she likes to change it up every so many years, and in the meantime you could be taking your time as to what to do next in life.

      @followtheboat  4 дні тому +1

      The canal network is extensive, Jerome. It's different to the inland waterways of the US, although there are a few similarities. It's quite a different lifestyle to sailing but yes, it could offer an alternative for the next few years.

    I'll go with the flow here. Maybe a canal boat switch is not such a bad idea at all....

      A pub on a river is really hard to beat, to be honest. It's about as English as you can get.

    That was nice. One of these days I'd like to try that. It being set in England, I was reminded of "Grantchester Meadows", a song written by Roger Waters:
    Hear the lark and hearken to the barking of the dog fox
    Gone to ground
    See the splashing of the kingfisher flashing to the water
    And a river of green is sliding unseen beneath the trees
    Laughing as it passes through the endless summer
    Making for the sea
    These images are just like what I see in my mind when I hear that song. Beautiful.
    Anyway, maybe you and Liz could rent a narrowboat and try it out for a week or two; that's what I'd do.

    • @followtheboat
      @followtheboat  4 дні тому

      You can always rely on Waters for such a sentiment. And you know Grantchester is just around the corner from where this was set? Love it.

    My buddy lives on a canal boat.
    It is something I have wanted to do.
    But long ago the urge to do it was replaced by wanting to sail to distant shores.

    I knew it would be great content. Some lovely stills dropped in there, ready made calender for British waterways. Now as this episode was such a good one, I have to suggext that you and liz could buy a donkey and cart and travel the Santiago de compostela and the content would be equally engaging 😊

    We sold our 45ft mauritius ketch and built a narrowboat in the UK, it has been the biggest mistake of my whole life😢, I'm now selling it to buy another sailboat.

      Why?

    • @followtheboat
      @followtheboat  4 дні тому

      Yeah, you gotta expand on that some more. Was it the building part that was the mistake?

    • @rachelmoore5703
      @rachelmoore5703 4 дні тому +1

      Building the boat was OK, we bought a bare shell ond fitted it out ourselves, we even had channel 4 come and do a bit of filming of it being built.
      The problem for me is here in the UK. The canal system is a complete mess and rapidly going into decline, more and more closures of the system every where you go it is just wet soggy mud, and for 9 months of the year or more it is cold and wet.
      The vandalism and crime is completely out of hand, I would never leave the boat for long as I don't want to come back to find windows broken or it being broken into.
      The cost of living here is also a major factor as well, we are locating back to Portugal and the med as our living cost are about 40% of what it cost us to live here.
      I have come to the conclusion that the UK is a miserable place to live compared to the countries we have sailed to, and lived in.
      I supposed we thought the grass would be "greener on the other side" as they say, we even thought that as we are now getting older we would need better health care 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 what a joke, the nhs and health care here is appalling compared to anywhere in Europe.
      As an example I had to get a detailed heart scan as I get bad AF, it took 7 months to get the scan.... That was 9 months ago and my GP or myself still can't get the results.
      I could go on and on.
      Basically I need to go back to feeling sand under my bare feet.... Not mud under my wellies!

    • @TimFurlong
      @TimFurlong 4 дні тому

      Really appreciate more detail on your experiences. I wonder though if you are just referring to life in England. Where was your boat? I'm going to guess it was in an area close to a city, maybe some poverty and far from decent healthcare. Of course, the NHS, the weather and bored youths are par for the course but that's not directly related to canal boats. The issues you describe sound like general life in Europe.
