    From inside the cover:
“Cuba was discovered by Columbus Oct. 27, 1492. Havana was founded by Diego Velazquez in 1519, becoming soon one of the most important factors of the New World. In 1528 the buccaneers laid the settlement in ashes; but it was immediately restored and De Soto built the primitive castle of La Fuerza in 1538, sailing some years afterwards to the discovery of Mississippi. The French pirate J. Sores pillaged Havana in 1555, burning it again. Other pirates and corsairs menaced the city and King Phillip II ordered the erection of Morro Castle and La Punta Fort in 1589.
Havana became the rendezvous for the goldships carrying treasures from Mexico and Peru and the commercial center of Spanish possessions in America. Here the ships entered to be armed and conveyed to Seville and Cadiz which monopolized the trade between Spain and her colonies.
Havana was besieged and taken by the English in 1762, being next year restored in exchange for the Floridas. Cabaña fortress was built immediately in 1763. The port of Havana was opened to all nations in 1771 for some articles and later on for all goods whatsoever. First paper published was La Gaceta appearing 1782. First railway about 1835. Also a ferry line across the Bay.
The close proximity of U.S. brought important trade relations between Cuba and the new republic, increasing every day up to the present time. Sugar crop has reached in recent years 5 million tons. Tobacco crop is worth 40 million dollars, fruit exports are very important.
Cubans fought for independence since the beginning of the 19th Century, the most important insurrections occurring 1868 and 1895. Spanish-American war in 1898 led to American intervention Jan. 1st, 1899, and finally, in May 20th, 1902, Cuba got her Independence.
In less than 30 years Havana has grown into a big Capital, increasing its population nearly three-fold, reaching now 600,000. The old city has spread in all directions forming new quarters of Greater Havana, in a radius of 14km., such as Vedado, Miramar, Almendares, La Sierra, Santos Suarez, Lawton, Vibora, Playa, Country Club, etc., with wide avenues and gardens, artistic residences, parks and beaches.
The old city is being modernized and embellished with wide avenues, parks, handsome buildings, etc., where the old and new are commingled, becoming day by day, a most charming and interesting tourist resort.”
