Thanks for putting a face to the names of the bike parts I rode on as a kid.
Ottavio Bottecchia.
As an Italian I'm proud to remember the great champion Ottavio Bottecchia (1.18).
Bottecchia was the first Italian to win the Tour in 1924.
He won in 1925 too and for his temper become a hero in France.
Sadly, Bottecchia died in 1927 in misterious circumstances.
He was attacked while he was on training on a solitary road by someone who was never identified and died days later for the injuries.
I didn't know. Thank you for the information.
Great video and very well done!
Would be great to see one for all the Lantern Rouges.
Just amazing,,,
These were some tough men
And let's not forget that Jan Janssen in 68, won it having lost most (if not all?) of his team along the way. Tough men indeed.
excellent, thanks man
Great video. I especially loved the part where Bartali rode away from that other rider. It was like that other rider was standing still.
henri cornet was 19 in 1904 when he won....
It was not until 1913 that the Tour was won without a moustache.
thys un des plus grand champion
Eddy had the most perfect riding style. The very esscense
I may agree with you on that. Very similar to mine.
I don't agree with you. I'm not a fan of his riding style. Another Belgian - Lucien van Impe. Maybe the most elegant climber ever.
@@nielskjr5432 Merckx didn't have a still upper body climbing style, BUT he got a lot of his power from his back muscles. His position on the bike was perfect though and 525 victories says it all in my opinion.
Wow climbing a mountain in a single speed race bike! Wow!
actually it was in the early years a fixed/singlespeed
And the bikes were heavy, road surfaces poor and stages were sometimes 400 kilometres. Mightily impressive.
MAGNIFICO CICLISTE
Those early bikes were truly horrendous .....those are the real champions.......and the others of course 👌🏻
Just love this video...
Im a mountain biker for 20years in Brazil and love all kind of bike race. but Tour de France is top
Fantastic photo's , amazing footage, well done and thanks. Question is, Will there ever be another Eddy Merckx, doesn't seem possible, they say his style wasn't the prettiest but my God you can see the power and determination that he put into every pedal stroke when he was attacking. And what about Bartali amongst the immortals, nobody before or since with a decade between victories, stolen years. As for my contribution, I'm in the middle of building up an old steel vintage bike, but it is going to be renamed in memory of the first tour winner and will be badged up as a Maurice Garin Galibier "midnight cruiser'. I will give it to my brother in law as a present, complete with Camapgnolo super record rear mech @ Bernard Hinault era.
Alistair Milner Bartali, by the way, saved thousands of jews from death during the WW2, he was a dedicated catholic from poor family. Such a great man!
Alistair Milner Gino was a great human being as well as a champion
@@alexandermatveev6081 Thank you for that , to be humbled by someone like Bartali is a good thing, indeed a great human being
@@paulcheney4114 Absolutely.
The 7th Panzer Division won the 1940 tour de france

@@generalfeldmarschallpolycr8118 the Ghost Division
Where is the 7th Panzer Division?
Jacques Anquetil France and Eddy Merckx Belgium have similar cycling style... seems to be a winning style... ;)
Forgot to include Erwin Rommel for 1940.
Beautiful. Nairo Quintana looks a bit like Jacques Anquetil.
... and Bernard Thévenet in 1975 & 1977 :)
7th panzer division won in 1940
Wielererfgoed voor altijd te bewaren.
Its a beautiful race.
Copy: Sad but he could be one of the greatest: Ottavio Bottecchia.
As an Italian I'm proud to remember the great champion Ottavio Bottecchia (1.18).
Bottecchia was the first Italian to win the Tour in 1924.

When was it that cycling helmets were required kit in the Tour? Not a single one to be seen in this video!
Mid to late eighties probably
The photo of the Tour de France winner 1936 and 1939 is not the one from Sylvere Maes but from Lucien Buysse. Although the photo of Lucien Buysse winner Tour de France 1926 is right.
4:38 last time with the bottle on the handlebars?1960
Who won 1940? The 7th Panzer Division
1940: Ghost Division
Ottavio Bottecchia
Where is the 1940 tour de france winner?
I thhink is missing the 1975 winner B Thevenet
O Narvaez O Bernard Thévenet winner in 1975 et 1977 . ( Thévenet wins vs Merckx in 75 et 77 )
What year did the players start wearing helmets?
Officially every one must wear in 2003, but many decades ago there had been many to wear a helmet, like the 1947 tour winner Jean Robic was the most famous one to do it.
1940 Tour de France is where they start wearing strong helmet
1940 dude, not only helmets but with tanks also
Come on we know who win tour de france during 1940.
7th panzer division
The true winner of the 1940 tour de France was actually the sixth panzer division
I was gonna say
The sixth used steroid;-)
Bikes all look somewhat similar all these years
My respect goes to those cyclist that in the in the early days did more than 400 Km without assistence , will like to see the 2020 cyclist doing the same today , I think will be interesting
Thoae years the fans having discipline to watch the event now a days lots of trouble beetwenn the racer and the fans

Thevenet 1975?
Yeah! Thevenet was the one who broke Merckx' dominance
