Slight clarification, Raine never was brainwashed. They were using whistling from the very beginning, which is why scene between Raine and Eda hits even harder second time. It's not that they forget their reunion, Raine wanted to push Eda away so she was safe and not tried to help with whats happening in palace.

So, for clarity, grimwalkers, like Hunter and the other Golden Guards, are clones made from a bone of someone who died. In this case, Belos' brother, Caleb. Whenever one realizes Belos is evil, he offs them and makes a new one. Learning that on top of everything else, it's no wonder Hunter's so traumatized. Poor kid.

I just pointed out that in the world he and Caleb came from that being witch hunters was an accepted profession, especially for two young orphans living on their own. Voldemort having a tragic backstory didn't make him a hero all of a sudden either, it just added depth to his character. We can see all how out of pocket Belos really was from behind the Fourth Wall. In his mind, though, he was the equivalent of Magneto being dropped into the middle of Berlin during the middle of WWII.

Because Belos is like 400+ years old and each grimwalker lasts 1-5 years and needs one of Caleb's bones to look like him and there's only 206 bones in a human body. But then the book Belos had only said it needed a bone, it didn't say it needed a WHOLE bone. So we don't really know how many grimwalkers there are, but there's at least 206

This episode really cements the idea that Belos is a dark reflection of Luz. In the beginning, Luz treated everything as a one big adventure story, almost dissociating herself from the reality and consequences to fulfill her imagined fantasy experience. She grew out of it, and now is more mature and treats those she meets as people rather than characters. She compares people and events to books and tv a lot less than she did back in season 1. Belos is the same way, but from a warped perspective. He grew up with stories about how magic is evil and witches must be destroyed. After arriving to the Boiling Isles, rather than learn to accept that things can be different from what he thought, he latches on to his delusion that witches are the villains and the enemy. He still imagines himself as a hero in his own little fantasy of slaying monsters and purging witches. It makes a lot of sense that his inner self first appeared as a kid. Not only to trick Luz and Hunter, but in a certain emotional level, he never grew beyond his childhood stories. The Gravewalkers are a symptom of that, he wants a sidekick so he makes one, and the moment the sidekick acts outside of his assigned role in Belos' story, he gets rid of it and makes a new one.

This is one of my favourite episodes. I spent months coming up with theories about what Belos endgame was, and even though it’s obvious now in hindsight (what with Philip being around since the puritan era) it never occurred to me that he was a witch hunter whose ultimate goal was to commit mass genocide.
Speaking of Hunter, his breakdown over both realising that everything he believed was a lie, and that he and the other Golden Guards are basically clones, was perfect.

Belos, Hunter's pseudo- parent tried to kill Hunter and Luz used Eda's jacket to save him. So, she used a symbol of her pseudo- parent's affection to save Hunter from being killed by his and then Hunter helped Luz by using the jacket. So, Eda's love won over Belos' toxic everything. Also, Eda's jacket versus Hunter's cloak. Eda's love and support versus Belos' possessiveness and obsessiveness. Saves people versus is thrown away in the midst of a panic attack (after helping to aggravate said attack).

7:30 - "For you, a thousand glowing eyeballs was the most terrifying thing in your life. But for me, it was Tuesday."
Remember in the beginning of "Eclipse Lake" when Belos had a book open on the page about creating Grimwalkers, it listed the ingredients Palistrom wood, Selkiedomus scales, Stonesleeper lungs, a Galderstone, and Bone of Ortet, four of which we've seen (the Selkiedomus they were hunting, the Galderstones in the graveyard, the Palistrom wood Eda got for Luz, and the Stonesleeper that was hibernating in the Titan's skull). Ortet is a botany term, that refers to the original plant from which you take the tissue to make clones of. Since Belos said Hunter "looks the most like him", the fandom has assumed that Hunter was made using the skull.
Also the book says Grimwalkers have magenta-colored eyes, which Hunter has.
It also hasn't escaped notice that Phillip is a witch hunter, and he named his "nephew" Hunter.

Throughout this episode several pictures are quickly or briefly shown in the background, which basically tell Belos' life story until he became who he is today. Here's basically everything that was told with these pictures:
He was raised by his older brother, and both grew up to become witch hunters within their town. After reaching adulthood, both would discover an actual witch from the demon realm who captivated his brother with magic, which would make him leave the human realm to follow her, leaving Belos behind. Belos, believing his brother was led astray by the witch's intentions, followed in pursuit to bring her to justice, and while he was captivated by the demon realm at first, that would end once he discovered that his brother wasn’t being forced but instead had gone by his own accord and had even fallen in love with that very witch, who was shown to be pregnant at the time he finally found them. Feeling betrayed by his brother for being with someone they were taught to hunt, he confronted him, and despite his brother loving that he was there (a picture of Belos being hugged by his brother while holding a knife is shown), Belos would eventually attack and kill him (they are shown fighting, and then his brother is shown lying on the ground with a knife next to him). Belos would then run away after being attacked by the witch, and this is basically where his goal in eradicating all witches started, and to do so, he needed to live a long time (shown in pictures to start eating Palisman magic and carving glyphs into his body) and had to be seen as a witch (shown to be cutting his ears to be pointy, a bloody knife, and all)

Like if you've known someone your whole life & you've always thought they were good person, you could walk in on them killing someone & you'd probably think they must've had a good (or maybe just misguided) reason because it almost always seems more logical to trust years of evidence over one really incriminating moment. It would be easier to believe the person they killed did something really evil than to believe a person you knew your whole life was faking being a good person the whole time.

All the devotion, genuine concern, loyalty and care the boy had shown him, all the time they spent together...and Belos first reaction to Hunter even remotely questioning him is to, essentially, shrug, say "Looks like my favorite tool just broke. Oh well, time to make another." and move to get rid of him.
