    Thank you, Peter. I have just bought this lens and my first impressions are very positive. I have experienced a little flare in bright sunlight, but I don't think it's going to become a major issue. Looking at your images proves that this a very good lens to have.

    One thing I liked on the G9 that my M1 Mark II does not have. Is that when I shot a burst with the G9 and the buffer was clearing, I could press the image review button and the camera would wait until the buffer cleared and then would show the last image taken. This is great for reviewing the histogram. I don't want to have image review on all the time. I just want to occasionally check my histogram. But with the mark one. If I shoot a burst and the buffer is clearing. And I press my image review button. When the buffer declares nothing happens. I have to press the image review button again. It would be sweet to have that updated.

    Nice review Peter. I love this lens. For me it is a must for landscape and astrophotography. I use Phil Norton’s 100mm square filter adapter with NiSi filters and it works really well. If it’s fitted correctly, I don’t normally have an issue with vignetting. I much prefer 100mm filters over the 150mm for the reasons you pointed out, less wind catching and not as expensive. Also, 100mm works for for all my other MFT lenses too!

    I have had this lens for quite a while now. I've even made myself go out and shoot relatively close objects with it, just to prove to myself that my photography skills had improved somewhat. As far as filters go, I bought the NiSi filter system about 18/12 ago but I still haven't used it. That's b/c I have been learning so many things in so many different directions, using so many of the Olympus lenses that I have. Anyway, I contacted Phil Norton Photography. Phil as you probably know is one of the UK ambassadors for Olympus. He makes/prints adaptors for the NiSi filters so that they will fit over this bulbous lens. I really wanted to have a lens with a good fit for night photography. Unfortunately the night skies haven't been right for astrophotography but it's on my list. Thank you for all of the wonderful videos you produce, Peter.

    Hi Peter the 7-14 is my favourite lens the only drawback with it is the 150mm filters. there is an adapter available made by Phil Norton in the UK that allows the use of 100mm filters used with the nisi v5 and v6 filter holders. The reviews on this holder are very good and enables you the same set of filters on all of your lenses. I'm thinking of getting one myself and selling my 150mm filters and holder.

    Hi Peter, Regarding filters, I have made my own front fitting filter boxes for 100mm filters that slide onto the lens hood. One is specifically for a CPL filter, the box can be rotated 360 degrees with no vignetting at any set angle, even when the lens is set to 7mm; I also fitted a band around the lens hood so that the filter is just clear of the hood when rotating it. The other box I made is also for 100mm filters of all kinds. !00 x 150mm grad filters can be move up and down for the desired effect. Easy to make from poly carbonate 2mm sheet. They work, and cost very little. If you are interested I could post some photo's on my FB page and send a link.
    The commercially available filter holders have a fundamental problem, which is this: the back if the filter is open to light coming from behind the camera. This means that light reflects back into the lens causing very bad flare problems. My home made system does not suffer from that.
    Thanks for very useful videos. BTW, the M1X with dual processors does have much faster focus tracking than the M1 mkii. Much better for birds in flight.

    Hello Mr Finland ! ;-) I agree, a fabulous, precious and beautiful lens... 7mm f/2.8 is a very wide angle for me with good aperture. I like it for : Startrails, Milky Way and Interiors... A perfect optic. Many thanks Peter.

  • @jackoneil3933
    @jackoneil3933 5 років тому +1

    Thanks Peter, I have the 7-14mm Panasonic but don't use it much because of the f/4 max aperture, and I don't care much for its tonal rendering and colours either. The Olympus looks to have great colours and tonal definition however and f/2.8 would be a big plus. Ultrawides can really save the day and transform something boring into something epic, and you don't see too many people using them to create dramatic captures. Also, how's the edge sharpness, good enough for astrophotography?

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  5 років тому

      Cannot say for sure. I have used it for astrophotography and was pleased with the results.

    Btw, I've used rear mounted filters of several different types and modified a full-frame to m4/3 adaptor to accept 43mm ND filter blanks for video and large telephoto lenses, and I often had trouble with ghosting reflections, especially with lights and sun. I've even experienced it with the GH4 and GH2 as the sensor IR filter was pretty thick and slightly forward of the sensor. I suspect it may have something to do with the close rear focal distance of m4/3 that contributes to the issue.

  • @jarrodswackhamer
    @jarrodswackhamer 2 роки тому

    Why do some sources state the closest focusing distance is 7.5cm and some, like you, say it is 20cm? This is a very important consideration for me.

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  2 роки тому +1

      The closest focusing distance is measured form the sensor, but some measure it from front of the lens. That is most likely why there is a difference.

    If you have to choose between this and the 17mm f1. 2, what would you choose given that wide angle and F stop are important?
    I already have the 12_100 Pro Lens and very happy with it. But it is F4, so not ideal for night filming.

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  3 роки тому +1

      If you need a faster aperture then I would get the 17mm f1.2. It is a marvelous lens. For ultra-wide I would get the zoom. The f2.8 is not bad but f1.2 is much faster. Not an easy decision.
