  • ⚙️ EPISODE 234: It’s difficult to visit a furniture collection like Winterthur museum and not walk away a little overwhelmed and plenty inspired. Just southwest of Philadelphia, Winterthur Museum houses the great American Decorative Arts collection of Henry Francis DuPont, complete with outstanding period furniture in numbers too great to explain. In this episode I share an insiders tour we enjoyed recently, a “Part 1” glimpse of this great stop one of our Epic Adventures! (Closed captions)

I work for a small museum that has one chair from a set that's at the Winterther Museum. The chair was made by John Aitken of Philidelphia circa 1820. Maybe one of these days, I'll stop at Winterther to see the rest of the collection.

Hey Tom, this was quite inspiring reminding once again of the artistry of so much fine woodworking. M still amazed at so many pieces that were (all actually!) done well before the modern era, particularly with all of our machinery. Like that’s shell chest on a chest, the shield back chairs and trying to picture the tools and what not. Those were serious artisan/craftsmen for sure! Your version of the chair was outstanding as well. Would such a project be one you might have a course in at some point? Anyway, loved this, wish it were longer but thanks for sharing it 👍👍

Franklin Gottschall wrote a few books on reproducing classic antique furniture with measured drawings that are, I think, quite good.

At least 30 years ago, I found and purchased a used copy of Gottshall's "Heirloom Furniture", copyright 1957. It contains 26 pieces from the colonial and Federal periods, including chairs, tables, chests, desks, beds, etc. His drawings and instructions are VERY detailed, right down to how to tie the coil seat springs. Though I admire the style and craftsmanship represented there, I'm surprised how my personal tastes have changed over the years. I now prefer more modern interpretations of those classic pieces. That's why I enjoy Tom's approach so much, why I've built 2 pieces from his plans, and why I continue to draw inspiration from other pieces he's made.

The CEO aka camera lady and Tom looked like they are having a good time touring around. Thanks for sharing that. Looking at some pieces I felt like how much time and genius did all that detail take to create. Wow! I will stick to fine art cabinetry and taking the bird dogs out for a run. My mind went into tilt mode after seeing a couple of those pieces.
