Formatting and Using Your M 2 SSD for Playstation 5 (PS5 System Software Beta 2.0)

- I got lucky and got a PlayStation 5 in February of this year but the custom SSD storage is very laughable. Thankfully, Sony released a system software beta in early August that finally lets PS5 owners make use of the expansion slot on the console. In this video, I show you what happens after you install your compatible M.2 SSD and power on the system. Disclaimer: This is not a tutorial as I will leave a link to a UA-cam video that does a great job in explaining the installation process. I also will have links for the suggested and compatible M.2 SSDs.

Thank you! ...i had this thing installed for a year (WD BLACK 2T) ...and thought it was working...when i checked my console storage i couldnt figure out why i had limited storage 😂
I never reformatted it...i guess thats what i get for being born back when cell phnes had a battery back pack that lookike you could call in an airstrike with 🤷♂️
anyways, thanks to your video i learned how to reformat it and move the games over...im 46yo and still learning, LOL 😅
No problem, glad the video helped you out!
I got a WD_Black 2TB SSD and it's ps5 compatible, it has a Playstation logo on the box and everything but it can't format the ssd regardless it saying 7000mbs/read
I got the 2TB Samsung with heat sink and it’s not even registering….
When I turn on ps5 I’m not seeing any reformat option whatsoever & it’s not showing up as it’s in there….
Have you fixed it? Have the same problem. I got the message but my screen just goes shut now while the ps5 remains on but nothing happens
My ps5 works without it…idk what’s going on
I got the same one and i even ordered it twice to make sure the one i got wasn’t broken and it’s still not working
Same here. Bought “the best recommended” Corsair MP600 and don’t have this fffffkng format utility. So frustrated. Can’t believe there’s no solution
Hey, new to all this, if you move a game over, can you still play it? Or do you need to brint it back and re-download it?
Thank you
Quick question when you use the wd did you use a heatsink.?
Thanks for the help, you actually showed step by step on what’s supposed to happen
Thank you! Glad that the video was helpful to you
Mine won’t format. Do you know why?
What brand and what is the read/write speed? If it is lower than 5,500 mb/s, the PS5 won't recognize it.
@@dbrandonthomasWD 1tb 7000
@@dbrandonthomas I bought Corsair MP600 Pro LPX 2Tb and I don’t have this damned m.2 sad storage utility. PS5 can’t simply see it
Just installed the white SSD 1Tb. from GameStop playing AC black flag, waiting for SM2 update
Why won't mines format it won't even show that screen
Did you make sure that the M.2 SSD is compatible with the PS5? The read/write speeds have to be at least 5500 MB/s. Here’s a link: www.dotesports.com/hardware/news/what-m-2-ssds-are-compatible-with-the-ps5
What happens if you accidentally don’t format it
Great video!
Thank you! Glad that it was useful to you.
This video actually helped me allot broh thanks allot ill give you a shout out one
Thank you! Glad it helped you in some way.
I installed a 2TB Samsung just like UA-cam videos suggest & im not seeing any type of formatting pop up, no SSD option, nothing, like it’s empty. I noticed that my Ragnorak bundle doesn’t have the green thing that the SSD hides underneath the SSD that the spacer uses….
The speed of the SSD will be the most important factor. If it is less than 5,500 MB/s, it won’t work. That’s surprising that the Ragnarok bundle PS5 doesn’t have a spot for an SSD.
@@dbrandonthomasso if you have a Ragnarok bundle version you can’t add an ssd?
I just got a WD SN850P NVMe SSD and it doesn’t show up at all it’s plugged in and everything I even took it out and reinstalled it and it’s still not showing🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
What are the read and write speeds on the M.2 SSD? If it less than what the PS5 requires, which is a minimum of 5,500 mb/s, it will not recognize it. Other than that, has the drive been used anywhere else?
So lets say i have 100gb left in ny console storage and i just installed a 2tb ssd. For example if a game i want to buy is 200gb will 100gb go into the console storage and the other 100 into the ssd?
Unfortunately no, it will state that the initial install location does not have enough space. It won’t let you separate files on the console storage and the SSD. If you still have PS4 games, consider an external hard drive for storing them as well as moving over PS5 games you are not currently playing. If you want to play them again, you will have to move them back to the original storage space
Can u plz make a video on doing this backwards, my ps5 got struck my thunderstorm and I got a 4t ssd that I need to format back to see if it still works plz help
Is the SSD already installed or did you remove it after confirming that your PS5 is working properly?
@dbrandonthomas i had the same issue but i removed the ssd to put in the new console
when you formatted it, did it delete your game progress?
No, the formatting of a new M.2 does not have any effect on your game progress. Game data is usually on the system storage
When i try to format it says “Cant format your M.2 ssd. Turn off your ps5 and then remove your m.2 ssd” what do i do
What type of m.2 SSD do you have? Check out this link for m.2 SSDs that will work: www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-install-m2-ssd/. Make sure the read/write speed is over 5,500MB/s and that it is at least 250GB or higher.
@@dbrandonthomas its a M.2 WD black 2T
@@distorted_sethhh did you ever figure that out? Mine says the same thing and it's the same ssd. Wd black 2T as well. I can't seem to figure out why it's doing that.
@@michaelll i had to get a replacement. It was a defective product
@@distorted_sethhh it worked after that? I've seen so many comments about the this exact thing with this brand SSD. I was thinking about just returning it and getting a different brand but if yours worked then I'll just try to exchange it.
