Cheers man! Fanboying out a bit here. Have to admit, I stole and regularly use "x, the real life Rome: Total War" in day to day life from your vid on Pakistan years ago.
I want to thank you Jordan, I'm a big fan of Ali, Mislav and yourself, and your many segments on the Byzantines on the pod have really captured my historical interest and I've been reading and watching everything I can on the East Romans. Can't wait to see your future live show on the subject, and keep doing what you are doing man.
I mean I know people don't like to hear it but the Ottomans didn't just conquer a shadow of a city and never improve it, it once again turned into the greatest city of its age filled with trade, cosmopolitanism, technology innovations, and fantastic architecture.
Made my day to see this posted. Always the best history videos out there, and you've knocked it out of the park again! It's not often you see this side of the Byzantine Empire, and it's always worthwhile to learn about the lives of those not born into the purple.
This is by far my favourite series that you do. I love seeing the human side of history. I think a really interesting one to cover would be Cordoba or Baghdad during the Islamic golden age!
That or Umayyad Damascus would be really interesting I do believe that you can’t really understand history if you don’t try to take into account all this minutia.
The art is the best. It’s so sad that the Shakespeare one exploded in popularity but this one just got less attention. The time and effort is very appreciated
''A man that is not armed with a sword at his side is effeminate. '' Noted, that is why I have two swords, A European cruciform long sword as well as a Byzantine curved Paramerion sword. Good content sir.
This is my first video of yours and I'm loving it! The way you explain life in the city is excellent. Cherry on top is the 8 bit and 8 bit sound effects.
In the siege of Constantinople in 1453, Ottomans had more than 35,000 casualties while the Byzantines had only 7,000 casualties. It was easier to survive if you were a Byzantine Greek than an Ottoman Turk.
Loved the part about faith hustling read a really fascinating account once of renaissance rome and the crazy variety of cons and hustles people were running! It’s nice yo be able to have some perspective on how viable it could be. Great video, thanks!
Especially during the late period, the hardcore Greek period of 1204-1453 (in comparison to the hardcore Roman early and the mix GrecoRoman middle) Constantinopol would be called Polis or Basileuousa by its inhabitants.
What fewer people know is that it also continued to be known as Byzantion, in every "period", the old name was never completely forgotten, I've seen it pop up in greek texts from different centuries from the "early period" all the way to 1453 and even beyond. I wouldn't be surprised if it had even been occasionally referred to as New Rome, that name likely also survived, at least in the title of the Patriarchate it survives to this day.
Is it just me or does Constantinople sound like a much better place to live than Elizabethan London? With all the cheap properties to buy, it even sounds better than modern London...
Idk about modern anything, I'm too fond of indoor plumbing, but for sure I'd rather live in byzantine Constantinople than any pre-19th century west European city I'd think.
The Byzantines and Westerners remind me of the British and Americans. One posh and ancient, the other rough and born out of rebellion against the former. Heck, the Westerners even carried arms. I can think of nothing more American.
Man the fact housing was cheaper in Constantinople than it is in the UK in 2023 is sad. You need 8x the average salary to buy a house here, then you only needed 1.5x 😭
What you have in Constantinople is a volatile dogpile of many mixed living standards. Things are in flux within a city of former united glory. While not downright nasty like Tudor London, this means your fortune depends "almost" entirely on how resourceful you are. Even skilled craftsman like Blacksmiths lacked stability if they aren't careful exactly who they produced for. But hey, that means even the lowly can rise if they're clever enough! The opportunities are there if you can find and exploit them.
This video is so interesting I appreciate it. Could you please make a similar one where you look at Constantinople during the reign of Amp Justinian I?
You probably got plenty of ideas, but since I’m digging your presentation can I suggest a few cities to cover? I think the sogdian city states sassanian ctesiphon medieval jerusalem early kyiv khazar itil might all be interesting subjects depending on your interests. Thanks for the cool video!
If anyone is curious as to why people who tried to take the throne were blinded or had their nose cut off was the belief that it disqualified them from taking the throne due to the Byzantine empires requirement that emperors be free from major physical or mental imperfections such as being blind or being mutilated or not having a nose it was considered slightly more humane as well
Awesome content bruv. Just an aside, I get the whole pixel art style thing and Im completely down with it, but if the pixels aren't the same size across the board, it makes it look weird
Why do some people refer to the East Roman Empire as Byzantine? Constantinople was built over the top of Byzantium!!! Constantine the Great named this new capital Constantinople of the Roman Empire!
Watching this video made me reeaally wanna play an RPG in this visual style set in Constantinople (Or Medieval Europe in general), does anyone know if something similar exists?
My question about the Medieval Roman Empire is that their biggest weakness was allowing the Western Church to exist. From the get go, the Papacy was not loyal yet Eastern Rome kept trying to reconcile even after it was obvious there was no restoring or holding onto the lost west.
I'm fairly certain if you time traveled to Byzantium at this time, ganking a ship and making a good flintlock and making your way to California and gold panning for a bit would pay pretty good lol
Sir may I just say this was an incredible video. You have a real talent. I really hope this gets the views it deserves.
Cheers man! Fanboying out a bit here.
Have to admit, I stole and regularly use "x, the real life Rome: Total War" in day to day life from your vid on Pakistan years ago.
Que? Friendlyjordies is a Jabzy fan? Not complaining though.
I agree with you man. This is criminal with how low views and likes are!!!
I absolutely love videos like this, they show a more personal side to history. Loving the art style as well!
Not gonna lie, this is an amazing concept for a game
Just never was the same again after The Fourth Crusade.
F in the chat
God damn the fourth crusade
I mean I know people don't like to hear it but the Ottomans didn't just conquer a shadow of a city and never improve it, it once again turned into the greatest city of its age filled with trade, cosmopolitanism, technology innovations, and fantastic architecture.
😒
Should've paid their debts.

The how to survive series is by far my favorite series you do
Edit: Looks like I died 5 minutes in to my Constantinople life
Facts
The art is the best. It’s so sad that the Shakespeare one exploded in popularity but this one just got less attention. The time and effort is very appreciated
Why?
This is absurdly extensive and exhaustive, you've created an original series and I'm trippin ballz.
Its genuinely a crime that these videos don't get more videos. They are some of the best videos you have made
You are killing it bro, a real Youtuboktonos. Robin Pierson would be proud of you!
27:40 -28:20 it’s amazing how many of these traditions are still alive and practiced today in Greece and Cyprus.
U know we're f*cked when the late roman empires housing was affordable
Okay now how to survive in Byzantine Constantinople in 1453?
Don't be there.
Be Mehmet II
Hide
jump in the moat (belching and farting)
@@thebasileus4793 they will find you, i suggest trying to sell everything and try to get a place on the venetian and genovese ships
Time traveler from Constantinople: "Wait, so you're telling me that they tattoo bad poetry ON THEMSELVES? And they PAY FOR IT???"
I love this series, so well researched and engaging!
I've been watching your videos for years and it brings me a lot of happiness that you continue to level up your style and keep posting for all of us
You gotta make more of these survival videos man
awesome pixel art & animation. love it!
''A man that is not armed with a sword at his side is effeminate. '' Noted, that is why I have two swords, A European cruciform long sword as well as a Byzantine curved Paramerion sword. Good content sir.
But do you wear it in everyday life? Cause if you don't wear it out on the streets than you're no Chad.
Now put them on and go shopping at Walmart
Proper quality contect mate. Makes me feel like I'm there for real.
Howww does this not have the views I watch all 3 of these videos pretty much daily to relax 😭 would absolutely LOVE more on this series
Living in Constantinople with this art style would be an amazing video game
Idk why they never seemed to use a roman or byzantine setting for games
This is my first video of yours and I'm loving it! The way you explain life in the city is excellent. Cherry on top is the 8 bit and 8 bit sound effects.
Way better than in the other 2 :-? I'd choose Constantinopole over London and Rome. This series is awesome btw. Watched it in a day.
such an incredible video. more please
I'm so glad this channel is still alive. I love the 8 bit with history.
In the siege of Constantinople in 1453, Ottomans had more than 35,000 casualties while the Byzantines had only 7,000 casualties. It was easier to survive if you were a Byzantine Greek than an Ottoman Turk.
02:44 "The Turks ignore their own women and grab any Greek or Italian they can find" I see nothing has changed in the past millenniums.
And that is why Turks look like European and not Asian.
Incredibly well-made video. I cannot imagine how much effort went into researching and making the visuals. Outstanding work.
Insane how much details are in this video gr8 work ,very much appreciated!
Love the format, reminds me of time/place long long ago (90s).
Loved the part about faith hustling read a really fascinating account once of renaissance rome and the crazy variety of cons and hustles people were running! It’s nice yo be able to have some perspective on how viable it could be. Great video, thanks!

quality videos Jabzy, good job!

Its because it was
Idk about modern anything, I'm too fond of indoor plumbing, but for sure I'd rather live in byzantine Constantinople than any pre-19th century west European city I'd think.

Living in Constantinople around this time, seems to have been a much better experience than Tudor London or Imperial Rome.
Can you do a video like this on Venice? Venice is at least one of the great cities during medieval and Renaissance periods.
Man the fact housing was cheaper in Constantinople than it is in the UK in 2023 is sad. You need 8x the average salary to buy a house here, then you only needed 1.5x 😭
Amazing video!

Amazing videos! Id love to see a video on medieval/renaissance Venice!
Your best format!
Super in love with this 8-bit retro gaming art style!
Love it. Gonna show it to my kids
Ok! Glad to see a longer version. The prior one appeared to have been cut off.
Magnificent, thank you 💜
I was waiting for this one ever sense the teaser came out. Good job.

Thanks for the Roman Empire part 2!
I’m loving these videos. Could you do an Iberian city next? Such as Córdoba, Sevilla, or Toledo?
Excellent video
The fourth crusade really screw things over for the romans :(
This is SOO FUN!! I LOVE THIS!
This is a brilliant show - so fascinating
50k views is criminally low for such an excellent video
wow what a amazing journey. thanks for this amazing video
I've been looking for a guide to surviving the mediterainian in the 9th century but this is pretty good too
Please do more of these!
You probably got plenty of ideas, but since I’m digging your presentation can I suggest a few cities to cover? I think the sogdian city states sassanian ctesiphon medieval jerusalem early kyiv khazar itil might all be interesting subjects depending on your interests. Thanks for the cool video!
Loved the video as always
Life in Constantinople was complicated. Damn..
Those guide are awesome.
Dude the animation is so sick. The thumbnail too!
Wonderful videos with not enough views!
Lot of detail man nice stuff
Mime. Mime never changes.
Ah, now the previous video makes sense. It completely lacked an introduction explainng the context, however this one does. Thank you!
More of these videos please, there so cool
This video was amazing
What an amazing video, really
Like the innovation of its theme
Great video.
This is marvellous, but I have a question. Why choose the year 1303, when Constantinople was a shell of its former self.
Practically no resources on pay, expenses etc. beforehand before the 4th crusade.
How to be a Victorian by Ruth Goodman would be a good source of you want to make one on Victorian England.
Lmao what a great series. The fact that we can listen to this at all let alone casually is such a privilege of our age.
Amazing animation! Thanks !
great video

22:31 is it a mistake cuz it seems like 3 copper can give you one lesser quality cawar but you can get 15 kg of better quality cawar for same price
I love this video
I would like to see a pre crusade Constantinople video
Do more of this video's I love them!!!!
Why do some people refer to the East Roman Empire as Byzantine? Constantinople was built over the top of Byzantium!!! Constantine the Great named this new capital Constantinople of the Roman Empire!
Wish we could have a game in this style tbh.
Watching this video made me reeaally wanna play an RPG in this visual style set in Constantinople (Or Medieval Europe in general), does anyone know if something similar exists?
You should do contemporary Chicago.
Ned's declassified Byzantium survival guide
Love the videos hell if I was to show kids something this is why I want to show them for history
You should do how to survive in cordoba,Paris and Alexandria
Didn’t know life could be so normal after the fourth crusade
My question about the Medieval Roman Empire is that their biggest weakness was allowing the Western Church to exist. From the get go, the Papacy was not loyal yet Eastern Rome kept trying to reconcile even after it was obvious there was no restoring or holding onto the lost west.
I wish this was a real game love the video
oh hell yes
I'm fairly certain if you time traveled to Byzantium at this time, ganking a ship and making a good flintlock and making your way to California and gold panning for a bit would pay pretty good lol
This should be specified to be a part two of the previous video
An engaging comment
I hope you do one of these for the viking age or something
