DIY Heddle Loom | Operating the loom

This winter I wanted to learn a new skill, but didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars to see if I liked it or not. So...I built my own Heddle Loom for around $50.00 after watching multiple videos of weaving and operating a rigid heddle loom on UA-cam.

This is fascinating. The attention and detail you put in to making this loom is one of the best home projects I have seen. It must be so satisfying to literally make an item from scratch. Back in the day I taught a boyfriend how to cross stitch. His project was a huge dragon wrapped around a castle with the threads being combined for special effects. I stitched it into a rolling frame so that he could take it on vacation or wherever he wanted. Instead of feeling embarrassed about a "girly" pastime, he would take it on the ferries to pass time, the park to relax or just stitch while watching TV. The crowds of all ages he would draw to watch him was incredible. I can hardly wait to see what you come up with next. Love it!!!!!!!!
I would LOVE to see your build video. I've wanted a really wide rigid heddle loom for ages but the price is just crazy. I can't wait to follow your build advice to make my own.
I just gave away my 10 inch Ashford Sampleit. This video made me realize that I could have made a wider loom using the knobs from 10 inch loom. Oh, well.

To help prevent the edges from coming in, lay the weft at an angle of about 45 degrees before you beat it in. So glad to see you are joining the "warped"world with the rest of us weavers! You do know that looms are addictive, and they don't like to be the only loom in a house?
Around here we don't watch "normal" TV, so when the internet starts acting up in the evening, I just pop a movie in and let it watch me while I weave :). Im also noticing a strange "side effect" that when I weave before bed, I fall right to sleep! Should of done this years ago! Thanks for the tip!!
I know its been a year since this comment...but had to chuckle, I broke down and bought a 8 shaft table loom..so your right, they don't like being alone in the house :)

I made one from a cardboard box and Popsicles sticks. It totally worked. I told myself I would buy anything new for a new hobby because I have sooooo many so I found a loophole in my own mind haha
Thank you so much for putting together the how to videos. Most helpful and I am a fellow woodworker/fiber artist and thought about making my own loom after seeing the high prices. Plus I enjoy making tools for my fiber art. Hope to get to making mine soon to use my hand spun yarn. Looking forward to more of your videos.

Put the weft in at a 45 degree angle to provide enough room to weave in and the salvages will be inproved. Next heddle should be denser slots and holes closer together and your cloth will be less airy. Learn to wrap your weft on the shuttle in a figure 8 way over the edge sides. You will get more yarn on the shuttle. And you could make your shuttle less wide. Easier ti handle. Just a few tips from a seasoned weaver.

Would you happen to have a pattern? For making the loom, you could totally sell the pattern or plans or even machines too.

I have a very rough PDF created for this I can send to you, most of this came right out of my head as I was building it. Its a template for the frame itself giving you the length, the width would be totally up to the builder ;)

@@RedSiloHomesteadI noticed the weft yarn (on the shuttle) was colored in different places. Were these separate colors tied together or did you dye them? Was it random or did you measure out in advance how much you wanted each color to take (is this all one continuous line of weft or different colors joined together?)

I have rigid heddle looms^^. But, this one seems work as good as the commercial ones. One suggestion.... You might want to make a double heddle block instead of single heddle block. That will open up more design possibility such as double weave. I understand you are new weaver so, you might think you do not want to advance at this time. But, a double heddle block also let you rest your reed in neutral position for a single reed weaving. You'll like it.
Will definitely have to look into that, just now starting to use shed sticks behind the heddle to change the pattern up a bit, would the double heddle do the same, but easier?
@@RedSiloHomestead Your heddle block does not have the neutral position-- most heddle blocks do have it. The neutral position in the block lets you rest reed on the block instead of hanging on the threads. Since you are using shed sticks, you might have already experience difficulty inserting shed sticks if the pattern calls for picking up threads on neutral position instead of down position. So, you might want to make a new heddle block. And since you are making one, why not double heddle blocks instead of single heddle blocks. The double heddle blocks will let you weave double size fabrics, finer clothes and more designs such as twills.
I have Ashford's Sampleit and Knitter's looms. I also used Schacht Cricket loom. I personally like Ashford's Sampleit double heddle blocks and I also think its design is more close to your loom. You might google the different designs of double heddle blocks and modify to fit your loom.
Great Video, and very nice piece of equipment you built for yourself!!!! You gave me lots of ideas, and after watching your video, I made one similar to yours but at a smaller size, just 18 inches wide, and 24 long. But I made two different types of heddles, one rotatory with the notches made with a Dremmel rotatory tool, and a flat one made from a plastic top. I use both and are very effective. Thanks a lot and keep on with your marvelous projects!!!!!
I'll have to look into the rotary one type heddle, the only downfall with making mine out of wood is Im noticing the warp is actually "sanding" through the holes, making them bigger. Over time, I'll have to replace/rebuild my heddle.
@@RedSiloHomestead You can buy a rotary type plastic knobs. The parts are available for sale. I'll go with Ashford parts.

Would love seeing you warping the loom! I've almost copied your form but haven't made heddle yet. Your loom is a real inspiration!!
Instead of using your rigid heddle as a beater bar, take your stick shuttle and thin the long edge some to give you a rounded thinner leading edge and use that. It'll also save you a lot of actions.

I am going to try my hand at making one like yours. I love the idea of spending less for this project. I am looking for discarded solid wood furniture pieces preferably maple or oak .I'd like to recycle, repurpose discarded pieces into a useful item. Thanks again for your inspiration. 🤗

@@RedSiloHomestead Two of my loom plans are books, published in the 1970s. They are very detailed plans for portable floor looms. I have two copies of each book so I can part ways with one set. I also have loom building plans by Craftplans. One book, 'Loom Construction', has schematics for about 7 types of looms. Where can I send these loom building plans?

Love to make my own large loom, so a can makes rag rug runners. Please help me I’m looking for instructions and advice.
So sorry for the late reply, have you looked at "Toothbrush" rugs? Made completely without a loom using just a large plastic needle (In the old days it was a toothbrush handle with a hole drilled in it). My grandparents would save up old clothes, towels, sheets, and cut them in to 1" wide strips and make rugs out of them. Lasted forever, easily washed, durable, and everyone in the family got one for Christmas :) For Rag rugs, they took 2- 4' 2x4's and 2 2' 2x4's, made a box, and put nails every 1/2 inch or so across the top, bottom and sides, and would weave the old 1" wide strips from rags across and and then down resulting in a 2'x4' rug. Hope this helps!
hey I'm trying to make my own loom I have 1 question that I'm confused about. how do the end strings work? because they're not wrapped at the end like a conventional loom you're able to wrap it around as you make your fabric. so how does that work?
Hey there! Great Question. So what I do is make sure that each end string of the warp is not in one of the heddle holes. When weaving right to left, I go over the top of those end strings, going left to right, I go under which locks in the edges.
