I always learn so much more than I expect to out of your videos. Even if I think I know about the subject based on the title I have to watch it because I know you will throw in so many little things that just make it all easier. I have always been into playing music but until about 2 years ago never did any recording or mixing. My wife and I started making recordings as a hobby and sounded pretty good live but pretty bad in a recording and I couldn't figure out why. I tried looking up all sorts of stuff and would get a tip maybe and then a paywall. Then I checked out your videos and have been coming back ever since. Fast forward to now and we got asked by our local children's museum to record a parody for an event they are having. You are a true gem in the rough Kenny! Thanks for always having the most complete information and no paywalls. I recommend you to everyone who asks me about anything reaper.

Yeah Kenny's is deceptive in the titles sometimes.😂 it will say drums and reaper= how to route your drums, save them as a template and show u like 8 actions u never even realized. 😅

Love that save new version of project... so I can create a branch of a different way without messing up the original.

Another great video from Kenny. I didn't know of this facility although I long ago set my preferences using his advice so that Reaper does timed backups as I'm working. Doing this has saved me on numerous occasions, which leads me to my thoughts /questions on what I would really use the Save New Version for. Workflow wise though, if I am going to make some big change to a project in Reaper, I will use Save As and then give it a new version number AND something in the new versions name that explains why I have moved forward to this new version. The Save New Version facility won't do that. Similarly, if I discover I have done something that has messed up my project (accidentally deleted a track/item/whatever) then I can work my way back through the automatic timed back up files until I find one that I feel is from before I made the mess-up. I can then make a copy of that and rename it to have a file suffix .RPP, load it and - if I'm happy it is where I want to return to, I can rename it properly and use it to get back on track as my main project .RPP file. The other thing I will do is regularly do a render of a project so I can listen to it away from the Reaper desk and on different listening devices, as part of assessing how well I'm getting on at getting the mix to where I want it to be. Because (thank you again Kenny) I use wildcards that include day and time stamps when I create a render and I also set Reapers render to create a timestamped backup up, I also have an .RPP file for every time I create a test render. This can be very useful indeed if I find that I have lost my way on a mix from an earlier test render, as I can go back to that .RPP file to find out what I might have changed and that made the mix worse. I have looked at the option for saving mix settings in a project but found that an unsatisfactory option as it may not save all the things you've changed (such as editing changes).

I would say continue what you're doing. I tend to hit save as and do "Song A.1" "Song A.2" so this helps with that.

@@REAPERMania Honoured to get a reply and I owe everything to your tutorials Kenny. I would have been lost without them as i learned how to work in Reaper. I probably still only manage to put to work a tiny bit of what Reaper can do, but as a musician anxious not to lose focus on making the stuff, and because time is not money for a retired hobbyist like me, I accept that I will spend a lot more time hand crafting each song. It's a good place to be anyway so why rush if I don't need to 👍😆

what is the difference between ‘save project as’ and ‘save new version of reaper’? how they can be useful in different cases?

    • @NunoSilvaMusic
      @NunoSilvaMusic Рік тому +2

I guess the main and only difference is that 'save project as' prompts you to name the new file while 'save as new version...' does this instantly by adding a number after the project name.
If you can remember what version 3 was about when you have 16 versions i guess this is very useful!

Is there a way to update the string appended to filename?
Personally I like to have versions of my project for production/mixing/mastering. Id love to be able to have Project.Mix and Project.Master but regardless love that this feature is added!
Currently im using the save as for that which can be problematic sometimes

  • @kpaceh

They should really make auto backups in a separate folder by default. I had few crashes and since then I have it set for every project I work on.

I'm not a huge fan of the new version technique for ongoing work, because then I have to figure out which version is the latest one. I prefer that "Song A" is always the latest and "Song A.1", "Song A.2", etc. are snapshots at various milestones. So what I wish Reaper had was a "Save a Copy" feature like some image editors I've used. This sounds similar to Save As, but has one important difference. You can give it a new name such a "Song A.1" but your active project is still "Song A". With Save As, the active project would change to "Song A.1".
The way I get this now is to do Save As, use Windows Explorer to duplicate the project file I'm working on (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V), then rename "Song A - Copy" to my new name. Then I cancel out of the Save As dialog without doing anything. I just use Save As to quickly get an Explorer window in the right folder. I'm not sure if this is applicable to Linux or Mac. It's a bit messy, but gets the job done. Adding a Save a Copy feature is a wish list item for me.

What happens if... you do multiple save-as-new-versions, close the project, then reopen the project? Last save-as-new-version is the one that opens? I like the idea of this, but I'll check this in the nest couple of days. THX!

Nice video for a useful feature. How does (auto) backups work with Save as new version ?
It seems there is only one global backup file for all the versions. Is it the case ? (I would expect numbered backups, which would not be very convenient !)
What about the auto backups files in the dedicated folder ? (Are they numbered as versions, or not ?)

@@ARE_YOU_SICK_OF_YT_CENSORSHIP of course, but since all the beginning of the video is about setting backup preferences, I thought it would be convenient to point the consequences (and especially advantages) of these with the Save as new version.

After 3 years using reaper , id say the hardest thing for me to understand and manage properly is my files , its gotten to the point where ive avoided my work due to the stress all of this causes me , i feel like ive tried everything but still a mess, ive had to reaort to just deleting heaps of projects because i just cant navigate tbem or go through over 200 projects to see if its an old version or not and most the time i think ive got the latest version but then end up working on an older one accidentally which saves and then i go to the latest bersion somehow and its wrong again , legit all this impacts my ability to create , i just want to plug in and play but im always putting put spotfires and dealing with all this crap and then just end up making gatbage
