    Was behind SDR1290 today on my Speed 1050RS. I'll keep my 1050RS because it has been absolutely reliable in the 3 years I've owned it. It is also a bespoke naked and looks great with carbon fiber parts and underseat exhaust exposing the whole back wheel, and it is a triple, so sounds great and is super smooth. It also has 119nm torque at 7150rpm and 100nm at 4000rpm. I am considering adding 1290 to the stable, as it is more mental and faster steering.

      Mate, I had a 2018 Speed 1050S with SC twin cans. It was red and absolutely gorgeous.
      But….. it was not a Superduke!
      I traded the speed for a V4 1100 Factory before quickly biting the bullet and getting the 1290.
      I also ride a 1200rs regularly.
      There’s nothing to touch a Superduke for fun and giggles.
      Btw, mines has been mint for the 2 years I’ve had it and for the 9K miles I’ve done on it.

    • @Peskarik

      @@theguitarhero898 I rode 1290R, S1000R and 1200RS back to back over the same hilly twisties (the shop is dealer for the three brands) and compared to my 1050RS, that was 2 years ago. I noticed the age of my 1050RS primarily in the handling department, mine needs more pushing on the bars, the other three are significanly more agile. I did not like the 1200RS enough to consider upgrading from mine, also too silent with stock exhaust and also had electronic problems (dash was crashing in a weird way). BMW was way too loud in a monotonous hoover sort of way and too industrial, but had the best dash of them all and if I remember correctly had the lean angle indicator (I love that function), but I was the most impressed by KTM 1290R, it is sizeable and spacious for a taller bloke, but is so agile, and the immediate throttle response is addictive at any speed. I then rented this bike for a day and took my gf on it to work in city traffic, it was splendid as "city bike" as well. If it were not for the reliability problems that I hear so much about, also the long term MCN review where they refused to buy it with own money, I would already have one. The guy I rode behind today, I talked to him, it is his second 1290R, the first one had camshaft failure at about 25k kilometers but was fixed on warranty...Anyway, now that 1290 is discontinued, and I prefer the look of 1290 headlight, I consider getting one but I will keep the 1050RS in case of KTM failure, plus 1050RS is a pretty nice bike in its own right. Maybe I ride 1200RS against 1390R later in the season, to refresh the memories, maybe I will like the Triumph more this time. I loved my 675 Daytona, sold it and now regret this from time to time.

      @@VFactory-vl5fi "But….. it was not a Superduke! " hear, hear! I rode SDR1290 back to back with my 1050RS/1200RS/S1000R and was completely smitten by KTM. I agree, there is nothing like it, it is in a class of its own. I tried loads of nakeds, several generations of S1000R, 1200RS, Tuono Factory, several Monsters, Streetfighter V4S, MT10, 890R, Street Triple 765, some MV Agusta even, Diavel, XDiavel, Rocket, maybe some others I cannot even remember now, but Speed Triple 1050 and KTM 1290R are the only two bikes that left indelible impression on me. I’m always drawn to the Superduke, this one is no different. Sadly, I can’t bring myself to buy into one given the multitude of documented major failings. Two of my close friends and riding buddies have ventured in, and both have been burned (including one bike being fully rejected after spending months inside a disinterested main dealer’s workshop).
    As another comment mentioned, it’s one thing having an all expenses paid day out on a race track in the sunshine with full support. It’s a very different thing living with one, sharing custody with the local dealership, and being stung for expensive repairs over and over again.

      I hear you, but just to offset the negative stories. I've had my gen 2 since 2018 (brand new, a few months after launch) so six years and 24k miles later of which several trackdays, and mine's been completely faultless apart from a dead OEM battery once. It has never had a problem that wasn't caused by my own spannering. Every bike and manufacturer has horror stories, I guess it's just a matter of both being lucky and keeping up with service intervals.

    I'm far too attached to my Gen 2 to part ways with it no matter how good the next Superduke gets. Something to do with taking out a huge ass loan over a long ass time and working 6-7 days a week just to pay it off because I wanted it that badly. That said, I agree with most of the common complaints that Gen gets. I'm still not trading it in for anything. I do hope I get to bag a testride on this monster one day.

      What would you say is your negatives? I’m considering a good used second gen vs springing for a third gen for $4k off or spring for 2024 and go all out. Would love your thoughts.

    • @mbpm6135
      @mbpm6135 6 місяців тому

      @@brandonstrong6846 I'd say the gen 2 needs a real suspension upgrade, so that means the correct spring for your weight. It could also do with the Akrapovic engine mapping, removal of catalytic converter and a booster plug. These are pretty small and inexpensive modifications that make a big difference. I haven't ridden the 3rd or 4th gen yet, but if you can pick up a healthy gen 2, you'd have about $6-10k to spare versus a gen 3 or 4. That's a lot of money you can put into improvements. There are tons of aftermarket options and stick to known brands. I also vastly prefer the looks of the gen 2 over every other one, but that is a personal choice.

    • @brandonstrong6846
      @brandonstrong6846 6 місяців тому

      @@mbpm6135 I appreciate that. Yeah I am looking at a 2019 with some great part upgrades for $10.5k 4500 miles, gen 3 for out the door $19000 or gen 4 being a solid $24-25k out the door. I too love the look of the gen 2, I just was worried the cornering prowess of the gen 2 would pale in comparison to the more aggressive new ones. Still thinking it over.

    • @mbpm6135
      @mbpm6135 6 місяців тому

      @brandonstrong6846 I think a gen 2 with new bouncy bits is plenty good for the roads. Oem suspension for track use is... adequate. If you are chasing advanced group laptimes, you need upgrades. I just want to know how reliable they actually are. I’ve been toying with the idea of a bigger naked, but I’ve put 30k miles on an MT09 with nothing but oil and tires. Being a daily commuter most of the year I’m not looking for constant headaches.

      I think you know the answer. Toying is exactly where you should leave it if you commute. The MT is obviously a much better option and as much Road fun too.

    I have never rode a naked bike. I come from owning superbikes. I have always wanted to buy a naked bike but I am worried about the wind on highways.
    Would I be able to ride in comfort on the highways without having the wind kill me. I understand it isn’t a touring bike and superbikes don’t offer a great amount of protection from the elements but naked bikes seem to be extreme.
    Please anyone with experience let me know. Appreciated.
