3: Béla Bartók - String Quartet No. 4 in C major. 1928.
2: Maurice Ravel - String Quartet in F major. 1903.
1: Sergie Prokofiev - String Quartet No. 2 in F Major. “Kabardinian". 1941.
Nothing compares with The Late Quartets, Op. 131 and Op. 132 especially, probably in all of music (let alone among string quartets) and few things do in all of art. Easily at the top
the fact that death and the maiden isn't even in the top ten is criminal
Well sue me then ;)
"Criminal (!?)" -- hardly; but to see D&TM's omission as an act of clear & poignant civil negligence, displayed with a rare & pointed degree of cultural indifference is transparently accurate; & thereby, if painfully, just, fitting, & appropriate.
@@sholoms nuh uh
@@composermortens.jensen4376 Wow. Mature. Really mature response. If you really want a following then don't say stuff like this to your viewers. Provide a logical explanation for omitting something, acknowledge that you forgot it, or just don't respond at all.
@@sholoms we get it man, you like using the semicolon
Honestly, the ranking itself is quite arguable, but the list is pretty neat. Wouldn't it better to make a top 20 or top 30? Half of the Shostakovich string quartet writing deserves being there, also Prokofiev's first, Sibelius and all of the Beethoven late quartets. Maybe even some Mozart or Haydn worth mentioning.
"Maybe even some Mozart or Haydn worth mentioning." Pretty hilarious, well done.
@@finosuilleabhain7781 They hold up surprisingly badly against the 20th Century lol.
@@klop4228 Mozart and Haydn? Against Shostakovich and Prokofiev? Gimme a break.
@@finosuilleabhain7781 You can have one.
I'll gice you Shostakovich as being about on par with them, though. They all have some real meh. But Prokofiev has two quartets and both are fantastic.
@@klop4228 All opinion and taste of course but I wouldn't put any quartet either wrote on a par with any mature Haydn or Mozart quartet; and probably, neither would they.
A Top 10 obviously very personal. It's surprising to see Beethoven's quartet n°14 only in 6th position. Behind Borodin (even if this Borodin quartet is very beautiful).
Always happy to hear Janacek being mentioned, such a understated composer!
It’s a fine list. You clearly listen to this stuff. My list has many of the same quartets as yours. Mine includes some Haydn, however.
so great to see prokofiev sq2 at first; i played it w my quartet just recently and i have to say it’s one of the best chamber works of all time imo!
16. Weinberg - String Quartet no. 6
15. Shostakovich - String Quartet no. 8
14. Bartok - String Quartet no. 5
13. Kabalevsky - String Quartet no. 2
12. Nielsen - String Quartet no. 1
11. Grieg - String Quartet no. 1
10. Lekeu - String Quartet
9. Novak - String Quartet no. 2
8. Lourie - String Quartet no. 1
7. Beethoven - String Quartet no. 7
6. Rochberg - String Quartet no. 3
5. Schubert - String Quartet no. 13 "Rosamunde"
4. Taneyev - String Quartet no. 3
3. Beethoven - String Quartet no. 14
2. Janacek - String Quartet no. 2
1. Beethoven - String Quartet no. 15
Because 10 is not enough 😃
Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Boccherini and Simpson in; Brahms, Borodin, Janacek, Ravel and Prokofiev out.
Ten great works. They’re all in my collection. My only quibble is ranking them. Better to just call them “ten great works for string quartet.” Because they are that.
Wow, Prokofiev being number 1 in any list is surprising.
Poor Prokofiev!
He had the misfortune to die the same day as Stalin.
His passing was barely noticed, but apparently the guy had a strong set of rocks, if anecdote has reality.
During the post war "Zhdanovschina" when the leading Soviet composers were given a public dressing down for the crime of "Formalism" in music, Sergei was overheard commenting, "What do these guys know about music? They should stick to politics".
A bold statement at a time when it was wise to keep a packed suitcase under the bed, in case you got that feared 1AM knock on the door and an invitation for a very long train ride to a very cold destination.
For me, the piano sonatas and the uneven piano concertos are basic library.
Toss in symphonies 4,5,6,7.
I admit I am unfamiliar with the quartet.
Worth a hearing.
Prokofiev PC 2 is up there with Beethoven 4 and 5, Mozart's, Brahms 2. Nothing touches Beethoven in string quartets though
I'm disappointed to not see Beethoven's late quartets as top 5 choices
Couldn't agree more...
Probably meant to be a representative list.
Worry not there are MANY of us who would remove Opus 131 from the sad spot of 8th and put it in the top 5 for sure. I’m fed up that Beethoven STILL gets the short end of the stick.
@@Mr29rosesnpc
The list is invalid honestly with that... Some of the greatest creations in all of art among Shakespeare and Tolstoy and doesn't even make the top 5 in a list of string quartets
Great list, covering most of the field - although I'd say there are many more great string quartets than 10. Certainly, my list would include one of Schubert's last three quartets, probably the very last in G.
Haydn for me - Op.74 No.1, Op.55 Nos 1& 2. Never bettered, never equalled, not even approached.
:)
What about Death and the Maiden
I am not strong in the music of Schubert.
@@composermortens.jensen4376you should give it a listen its fantastic
Huh? Nothing by Haydn or Mozart?
If I made such a list, it would have many of your choices in it, that's a good compilation. But mine would definitely have Crumb's BLACK ANGELS, Schoenberg's 4th, and Hanson's STRING QUARTET IN ONE MOVEMENT.
¡Maravillosa selección!
No Schubert?
Where is Mozart and Mendelssohn.
Do any of the Nielsen quartets come close?
Haydn’s Deutschen hymn would have been nice.
Yeah,& what's more, how could every single, recorded Acoustic Blues' Master Guitarist & Songwriter be an African American man from a smaller geography & timespan than Europe's Master Quartett composers have been, running from Motzart to Shostokovich?
(Another cons🤔piracy?)
No Mozart?
Can't believe that Tchaikovsky isn't here.
or debussy. he only wrote ONE string quartet piece and it's so good. Just take a listen & you'll understand why
Or Schubert
Mozart , Mendelssohn
And where is Mozart?
No Mozart!?
@@aboy1983 no
Lol Prokofiev at 1? Ur high
nope
Literally no Mozart or Haydn--The father of the string quartet? I get it you like the Romantic era, that's fair I guess.
Isn't Haydn father of the symphony?
Both@@Loogia
sorry to be that person but what recording was used for shostakovichs 8th?
Sounds like a recording by the Dover Quartet--it's live, and its thumbnail shows them seated in a circle.
@@GlaceonStudios thank you so much🙏
Se è una classifica, è ridicola. Beethoven Number One! Forever!
not to be that person, but how can all the 'best' string quartets be by old white men from a 100 year period?
Because they are the best ;) not saying that there isnt any women or contemporary composers who makes good string quartets too. But If i where to value between any of those composers i listed together with any contemporary. Then i would still stick to the same list.
I am in the making of a list of contemprorary composers later. But could you really say that a string quartet by (as an example) Judith Weir. Is better than those i listed?
@@composermortens.jensen4376 Yeah.
@@connorcmusician i think it’s because throughout history it was much harder for women to achieve the same level of education (of most categories, including music) as men. These amazing quartets were written by men because primarily only men composed, not the other way around.
If you aren't looking for white composers, Heitor Villa-Lobos is a Brazilian composer who makes some good stuff, he made like 11 quartets
Considering that personal preference is a thing, and that the only period in which women or people of other ethnicities received musical education of the same quality as white males is contemporary, it's definitely possible for someones list to be all old white men without any sexual or racial biases involved.
Very poor uninformed list obviously
