iomoon Trust me, you're not the only one here doing that 😂😂 I hate spirals, and I hate falling... it's not a good mix together because I always end up falling in the process
while doing biellman spiral i tripped forward, catched my toe picks and then... oh, then the belly hurted and i thought i was going to die! But i know i still have to learn it so i try to overcome this fear of falling
I've done that a handful of times...I call it a skating belly flop haha Great attitude! Yes, keep trying and don't let your fears stop you from accomplishing your goals.
There are many videos on UA-cam! The way I learned my stretches is I warmed up by doing a few jumping jacks and then I went for it! I held it for a minute then relaxed and did that 5 times a day and I got them in less than a month
First try sticking you foot at the back like a landing position, then go to the side and get a friend to stretch your leg as far as it can go, keep doing this every week, it should really help, this is what I did before I could do a spiral
I love them all, and you do them all beautifully. I always enjoyed Sasha Cohen's side spiral and Charlotte spiral, so those are probably my two favorites, but nothing gives me goosebumps like a perfect traditional spiral. On that note, nothing ruins an otherwise splendid program for me faster than an ugly spiral. Those "little things" really do matter for the viewer!
I have been doing figure skating for about five minutes now and these tutorials are really helpful. Thank you Coach Michelle Hong. Because of you, I am going to be at the winter Olympics in 2022.
have you seen the Y spiral Yuzuru did in FOI? It was amazing. I think he should show more of his flexibility in competition since it's so rare in men's.
Your videos have helped me so much for artistic roller skating. Don’t know if the moves are called the same in roller skating but your stretch routines have helped immensely!Thank you!
I had felt that if Michelle Kwan had added a Bielmann variant of her famous COE spiral, she would had garnered a higher chance of winning Olympic Gold. Tara Lipininski nailed the coffin shut with her triple-loop triple-loop combo at the 1998 Olympics and Sara Hughes edged her out with a technically more difficult program, while Kwan fell on her triple flip.
Have you tried stretching the chinese spiral on the wall? If you can make sure your hips are square there first it will be easier to control when you actually do it gliding :) I hope that helps!
Wow... so beautiful!!! I was wondering if I could get your advice on something! I've been thinking about starting ballet to increase my flexibility for figure skating. However, there have been mixed opinion about ballet being helpful for figure skating. Some say that it actually hinders skating because the basic position for ballet is the turnout which is so different than skating... and the rotations done in ballet is the opposite direction compared to figure skating... so... as an expert. What is your opinion on ballet for figure skaters? Is yoga better ?
As a coach of 3 decades, I have off and on ice direction-edge-Type of position: I love teaching F O (ah tea tudeS) ,...Excuse me_PLEASE ( I speak it,.. "Grande ( rond de jambe en dehors) EN (Ah rah besk)" My Free style 3 kids learn and supplement with ballet looking for that 180degree 's. Stress the % of times that is common when learning a new element? I feel aggressive attempts must be made! PLEASE! More BLOOpers!! You are awesome~ and strectchy.
Your so flexible so am I I'm am a figure skater and I'm double jointed thanks for sharing your video with all us other UA-camrs it makes me want to skate all the time seeing other amazing skaters on UA-cam:)
WOW! Just amazing!! I love them all, you are an amazing skater!!!! I wish I could make my spirals like that! But my big problem is that in a traditional spiral I don´t know how to open my hip and how to put my leg behind, also my foot is down and a just can´t put it up!! :( Can you help me with that please??
So we're initially taught to do spirals with the hips closed (warrior 1 hips, in yoga talk); some spirals seem to have the hips stacked (warrior 2 style). Is this illusion? If not, when does that transition happen/what's the benefit of initially learning closed hips? Thanks!
Do practice the splits! If you do split exercises such as lunges it really does work with spirals and helps you with further spirals I got my splits in 2 days just doing lunges repeatedly
omg i wish you can be my coach i love LOVE this sportand want to become a figure skater. I know alot of people tell me 13 is way to old to be one but i am willing to put alot of effort into it!
13 is not too old at all!! I started at 16, now 17 and I’m doing perfectly fine. It only matters how ambitious you are and if you’re willing to go the extra mile! You may not get into the really high competitions if you don’t reach the required level by that time, but it is definitely possible!!!!
I've always had a hard time getting my spirals as high up as I want to. I can do the splits on the floor, but when I try assisted spirals, I can't seem to get my leg quite that high! Do you have any tips on how to get your leg higher?
Have you tried them with ankle weights? You place the weights over the the top of your boot, do your spirals, then take them off after a few minutes. Your spirals should go higher.
I want to try the side spiral but my problem is I’ve had a few hip surgeries in my past that it makes it difficult for my legs to go up higher on their own to be able to grab my blades. I have to use both of my hands to to lift up my legs to the height that I want them to be at so that I can grab my skate. I’m practicing it in my room for now. But is there a much faster and easier way I could try?
I want you to be my coachhhhhhhh😭 NOTE: I want to learn ice skating but unfortunately, there's no ice rink here.At my hometown had two but I am moving to the other country so...yah...😌 For now,I'm just practice off ice only 😭😌
When I was first learning spirals, I didn't learn anything crazy. I just learned the type of spiral where your leg is parallel to the ice. But the strange thing is, I never fell. My first few times, I held my coach's hands, and when she let go I was sure I was going to fall. I just never did. Fast forward to when I was confident in my spirals, maybe a year later. There's a cute boy at the rink, how to get his attention... I smiled at him while going backwards, then did a quick mohawk and went into a spiral. My dumbass forgot that the ice hadn't been zambonied in two hours. My skate hit a scratch and down I went, facefirst onto the ice. The boy stopped in front of me and said, "Now that was elegant." I still laugh thinking about that, I may have gotten his attention, but it sure wasn't how I wanted to...
Jaydien Oscar I have the opposite problem!! Haha Try bridges and camel pose. When you're comfortable with the camel pose (which is kneeling and then catching your feet backwards keeping your calves at 90º) you can try bending even more, so your head almost touches your feet. You hand can go even further away or to your knees. Writing this is very abstract, but if you search in Google for both "camel pose" and "extreme camel pose" you'll see what I mean. And they're very useful as back stretches. But man, my legs aren't flexible at all ://
Why have spirals been downgraded in competitive skating today? Before they switched to the points system, spirals were a major component of competitive figure skating, why change this?
Very beautiful. What if I'm unable to dislocate my hips?
haha you can still work on flexibility. No need to dislocate any hips!
Amazing. My leg only goes half as far
at least you didn't trip forward on your spirals like I sometimes do. 😂 you are very elegant.
iomoon I've done that before several times... it hurts to belly flop 😭 Thank you!!
iomoon Trust me, you're not the only one here doing that 😂😂 I hate spirals, and I hate falling... it's not a good mix together because I always end up falling in the process
iomoon omg same I kissed the ice once
My favourite is the Charlotte Spiral! I haven't seen many people use that in their programs...
My spiral is so high just like hers I love ittttt
My fav is the traditional spiral, followed by the beilmann spiral
while doing biellman spiral i tripped forward, catched my toe picks and then... oh, then the belly hurted and i thought i was going to die!
But i know i still have to learn it so i try to overcome this fear of falling
I've done that a handful of times...I call it a skating belly flop haha Great attitude! Yes, keep trying and don't let your fears stop you from accomplishing your goals.
I've done that too, I now have a permanent dimple on the front of my hip for it. Hurt big time at the time but now I laugh about it
Hey I am figure skater and I am starting to work on spirals but I am not that flexible so what are some thing I should do to stretch
There are many videos on UA-cam! The way I learned my stretches is I warmed up by doing a few jumping jacks and then I went for it! I held it for a minute then relaxed and did that 5 times a day and I got them in less than a month

I like the traditional spiral the best. It’s elegant and unassisted.
Yay! So happy your back into UA-cam!
Me too! It's been too long. LOVE YOU SOFIA!
I have been doing figure skating for about five minutes now and these tutorials are really helpful. Thank you Coach Michelle Hong. Because of you, I am going to be at the winter Olympics in 2022.
Biellmann spiral is my favorite!
Omg… this is flexibility 😮👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
They are all beautiful. That was the most graceful fall I’ve ever seen in the bloopers, lol.
I love all of those spirals!!!! 💖💖💖
have you seen the Y spiral Yuzuru did in FOI? It was amazing. I think he should show more of his flexibility in competition since it's so rare in men's.
Wow! Just wow! I have no other words! I’m going to practice my flexibility twice as mush now.
Beautiful!! My favorite spirals I like practicing are traditional and side spiral. Thanks for posting!

My favorite one and the one I am learning is the Chinese Spiral
Yes, I love that one too!
Wow! Beautiful but insanely scary hahaha I adore watching Yuzuru perform such moves 🥺♥️

Coach Michelle Hong THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤❤
I just love spirals!
I’m not flexible at all.. so I can’t do any of these 😭
same 😥
work on your flexiblity!
i needed this cause i skate
Who can dislike this?

gurl i started figure skating again at SIXTEEN! (i did do it for a year at 7 though)

Most of them is about flexibility, one must get it before do on ice. Some adults may lost the flexibility already

can you do a tutorial or stretch routine for a fan spiral 🥺
I'm flexible but really bad at balancing and doing the moves while standing. Any tips?
Where do you coach? Do you also coach online?
I’m trying to learn the Chinese spiral for our upcoming Christmas show. Lmao ima die
Woof! xD
Side ways spiral
I fell forward on my first ever Chinese spiral and broke my wrist lmao
Since when the "Half-Biellmann" spiral is called the "Chinese" spiral?
Piznoc Tsauo always...
I dont get the side spiral...Tips please...
What kind of skates do you have?
the side spiral looks a lot like the Y-Grab
I need to get way more flexibility to do this oml😞
Maybe i should stretch today
When I do a bielmann and tip too much forward...
oof!
Tried doing a (pathetic) Chinese spiral and i recorded it and wow it was a lot more sucky than I thought 😂
Quick question - why is it called a spiral?
Why is it that i can do spiral well with my left leg up but not the opposite leg? Ive trained both equally and im right handed... why :(
Because some things are just harder on one side versus the other.
nice vid! so why is the Chinese spiral called the Chinese spiral
If I only had the back and shoulder flexibility.......
I wanna practice these but I’m afraid people will judge me 😂
If my back was flexible enough...my legs are, just not my spine lol
Jaydien Oscar I have the opposite problem!! Haha

Because if do it bad, it could be really boring.
