Don't use a stove fan with your Mr. Heater Big Buddy or Little Buddy!!!!!

  • All of the videos I have seen on this has the Mr. Heater using the stove fan outside or in a cold room. This is to keep the heater under the max temperature of the fan. In a room (or camper) once the heater heats everything up the temperature is just too hot.

The fan makes the heater much much more efficient. All you needed to do was to find a way to place the fan in a position where it did not overheat. That is why it comes with a thermometer. Something like a piece of tin (paint can lid) between the heater and the fan or a coat hanger to move the fan a little further up or back was all you needed to do. They sell replacement Thermoelectric generator modules for your fan. Go fix the fan and continue your experiment and it will work great.

On a little buddy there is no other place to put it as it is only one tile. And on my big buddy I was measuring the off side at just under 700. The on side was just over 700. Only 50 degrees difference but all over the 675 max.

@@johnwilliams7473 I know I could build a spacer to dissipate the extra heat and still be able to mount it with zero issues. Possibly take a gallon paint can lid and fasten it to the buddy handle with conduit clamps (then put the fan on the paint can lid) on the carry handle the extra heat would go around the lid and not strait up. Also I would design a way to be able to put the fan a little more rearward. That fan is so important I would find a way to do it.

I have my stove fan sitting on a grate attached right above the top of the protective cage of the big buddy (you can see my set up at my UA-cam channel). Pursuant to watching this video and your analysis, I used my laser thermometer to measure the temperature at the the base of my stove fan. This is a Big Buddy Heater, on the highest setting, and it had been running for nearly three hours at that setting (with the stove fan). The temperature at the base of the stove fan is between 350-360 degrees F. I then measured the temperature near the wires, fan heat sink etc., and that was like 280 -284 degrees F. I'm just not getting the high temperature readings you report. Not doubting you, certainly not trying to argue. Your report and analysis is worth consideration. Thus the reason I did my own testing/measuring. But, I'm just getting different data, and having a different experience. No fan failures, no wire melting. Just a good a heater and stove fan combo that appears to work very well. And it seems to be operating within specified temperature range. My 2 cents... 🙏

Thank you for your inciteful comment. It also caused me to rethink things and I understand the difference in our data. You stated that you use a grate on top of the grate connected. I didn't. I sat mine on the grate from the factory. The grate that you were using should have been stainless steel as it dissipates heat much better than most other common metals (It would act like a heat shield). I would ask that you temp the black grate under yours and you should get results similar to mine as that is where my fan was resting with nothing between it and the heater. I will have to try the grate concept as it seems to work. Thank you. :-)

@@johnwilliams7473 you can get a paint roller strainer for a few bucks at the local hardware store, and although it isn't stainless steel should hold up fine. The smaller strainer for the little buddy and the full size for the big buddy. An inch or 2 above the grill makes a huge difference, and I also question the wiring choices of that fan manufacturer.

I have that exact fan, and use it with my buddy and it works great. You need to raise it and move it back so it doesn’t get as direct and the fan blows air through the heat stream. I built a support from a coat hanger. Also, if the fan warms up too much, the heat differential that makes the electricity won’t be sufficient and the fan will stop. It takes some “field engineering” to get it to run consistently. Don’t give up.

Also I have two individual fans instead of a double unit so there is space in between the two of them so there is much less chance of overheating! I think it has more to do with the area that it’s in. In my kitchen where I test even the off side of the big buddy gets radiant heat level of 650 after running for 15 minutes. I tested it out in my camper (starting temperature of below 50) and it would get to 600. (It was at 600 while filming because the room was around 45 degrees.) I believe if I had it in a colder room (my kitchen started at around 68 degrees) I could use the off side radiant heat to power it but then it runs into in-efficient. I ended up settling for running power and placing a small 10” desk fan behind it. The desk fan is much stronger and I don’t have to worry about over heating. Also I can run the big buddy on high and the fan on high and push hot air over 15 feet away. The stove fan was debatable if it would push the air 3 feet.

Yes we use the electricity of the blower intake but not for long...works better than the stick furnace this is on a brand new Bullet 36ft 2 bed 2 bath.Tried a smaller desk fan but the blower works way better in distribution and I can point the exhaust vents whatever direction I want all throuought the ceiling. If you have a furnace on board...may want to try that

The Big Buddy heater can be purchased with an internal fan included. They stopped selling these for a while, but they are available again. I purchased one from Sam’s Club a few months ago. A small ceiling fan will bring the heat from the ceiling down to the living space of a travel trailer. Paid $20 for the one I have have from Amazon. Works by USB and has an inline switch.
Positioned my fan (like yours) on my Little Buddy but there's too much heat rising from the heater to be effective without damage to the fan.
I did use the heat-driven fan atop a 3-candle chandelier. The fan started just fine but, there wasn't enough heat rising from the front of the set-up.
Insta-fire has a stove/heater combo using the heat-driven fan that works very well. It burns canned fuel. I tested the heater with a 2-hour fuel can. Pleased with the results. This combination is designed very well.

No. Thermo heat generation is a very real thing. It’s just that stove fans max is around 660 and the min on the grate is right at 700 in 60 degree room. This will cause the fan to over heat after 15 to 20 minutes.

The Vulcan/mini Vulcan from Kontax have operating temperatures of 450C/500C (840F/932F) respectively, so a bit higher margin than ~350C/650F stove fans.
Also, have you measured the temperature when it's set to its highest setting? I'm kind of curious what the temperature range ends up being

Good video, thanks for the tips on the stove fans. I'm not being rude, but I have to ask, and I see a lot of people doing this, why do you have the 20lb tank in the same room with you? I read the instructions that came with my Mr Heater Big Buddy, and here is what it said: DANGER! NEVER bring a refillable propane cylinder indoors. A fire or explosion can occur causing property damage, serious injury or death! Also use: The propane cylinder must also be used with Tankfoot F273169. Place holder on flat surface then place 20 lb. cylinder in holder and push down to bottom.
I understand the need for a 20 lb tank, but I believe the thought is that it needs to be outside the heater area, tent, shack, shed, camper. I have blower fan on mine, so I guess I'm not seeing the added value of a stove fan accessory. What is the rated CFM needed to distribute the heat in a 1000sq ft area or less? thank you and Merry Christmas! be safe🙏🙏

    • @johnwilliams7473
      @johnwilliams7473  Рік тому +2

Merry Christmas to you too. Also, the heater comes with the suggested cable number on the box to connect the 20 pound tank. After talking with someone at Mr Heater there suggestion was to use the mr heater brand as off brands use a cheaper rubber which causes oil to separate in the hose leading to a clogged line. I was able to confirm this with multiple videos on clogged units and how to fix them. Also, the heater shouldn’t be directly on the tank but can be in the same room. I believe the warning is more for the hose getting in the direct line of heat which can happen.

It's a safety precaution. It assumes the possibility of a propane leak at the tank which is why they state it should be outside. If you can, then yes it is better for it to be outside. There are two drawbacks to that: are you using it in a location you can safely run the hose from outside to inside, and depending on outside temperatures it can affect how well your propane vaporizes. Admittedly propane is supposed to work to -40F ( I think) but the vaporization process cools it down even faster when outside temps are low.
If you have good equipment and follow good safety practices you should be ok with it indoors. Keep the tank away from the heater and check for leaks (not with a lighter). If your tank is in good condition you shouldn't have any issues, but it does happen.
