In March 1993, photographer Kevin Carter (1960-1994) made a trip to southern Sudan, where he took now iconic photo of a vulture preying upon an emaciated Sudanese toddler near the village of Ayod (South Sudan). Carter said he waited about 20 minutes, hoping that the vulture would spread its wings. It didn't. Carter snapped the haunting photograph and chased the vulture away. (The parents of the girl were busy taking food from the same UN plane Carter took to Ayod).

The photograph was sold to The New York Times where it appeared for the first time on March 26, 1993 as 'metaphor for Africa's despair'. Practically overnight hundreds of people contacted the newspaper to ask whether the child had survived, leading the newspaper to run an unusual special editor's note saying the girl had enough strength to walk away from the vulture, but that her ultimate fate was unknown. Journalists in the Sudan were told not to touch the famine victims, because of the risk of transmitting disease, but Carter came under criticism for not helping the girl. "The man adjusting his lens to take just the right frame of her suffering might just as well be a predator, another vulture on the scene."
Carter eventually won the Pulitzer Prize for this photo, but he couldn't enjoy it. "I'm really, really sorry I didn't pick the child up," he confided in a friend. Consumed with the violence he'd witnessed, and haunted by the questions as to the little girl's fate, he committed suicide three months later.

This video is not only a message of true love for mankind but a subtle plea for action that cannot be ignored. Here, Doug chose to present the message in black and white, signalling a bleak dire need. Rain signifies a goodness for required nourishment. 00:42-00:47 appears the image of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta, "Human kindness". 00:54 "And I think it's going to rain today" Image of Neil looking out the window with a secondary image of rain pouring down in motion. 01:13 is a juxtaposition of two images: "Scarecrows dressed in the latest style" An anorexic model with 'style' followed by an image of starving children in India.
01:22 "Human kindness is overflowing". This image portrays two people's hands, one giving a heart to the other that first appears a color (appropriately, red) .
01:57 shows a homeless man caring for his dog, where people needing assistance are most often ignored in society.
02:08 is beautifully highlighted in Doug's opening comments on the photograph of a vulture and a starving child in Southern Sudan, Africa that is well worth reading.
02:17 "Help the needy and show them the way" as the image of Mother Teresa shows us of her embracing the face of a child. 02:19 "Human kindness" Neil's image.
02:23, "Is overflowing", hands open to another giving a heart amid black and white, to red colored heart of love and compassion. 02:30 - 02:35, "And I think it's goin' to rain, today" - A woman's image, wet with rain (the rain is moving) followed by her clutching a red flower. 02:41 - A quote from Mother Teresa of Calcutta, as said in simplicity and truth: "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop". With Neil's gift of sincere singing, combined with Mother Teresa's simple acts of charity and Doug's talent to envelope the message in art form, we can go forth and add a drop to the world's great oceans. ✨

🥀🦋🥀 The more I get to know the Neil Diamond that I had placed on the back burner so many years ago, I am realizing how deeply caring and deep thinking this man was and still is. This song is on the Stones album with "Suzanne" and "Stones", two of my favorite ND songs. I don't remember paying much attention to this song. Does this mean I was not sensitive or caring enough? Don't think so because this was when I was teaching school as I described on the Blackbird video. I really cared about my students and they knew it.
I am not sure I want to post this.😥 Emotions are stirred up which maybe was the idea?

Hazarding a guess, perhaps being caught up in the thrill of those moments (the concerts back then) you may not have truly have listened to the words and the feeling they conveyed. I guess to me since "I Am... I Said", with Neil Diamond, the words, his words, have always mattered.

Hi Doug! I believe you are right about being "caught up " in the moment following the concerts. First, I "just had to go" after hearing songs like 'Longfellow Serenade ', 'I Am I Said ', 'Stones ', and 'Suzanne ' on the radio. Then I bought the album Stones! Remember I was 25 or so and just starting teaching....lots going on. I didn't hear a song and think, "I need to find out why he sings this or what does it mean?" I loved the music, rhythm, his voice!
Now, in the 2023, and finding your channel and reading your commentaries and comments from others, I see a new Neil Diamond that I didn't realize was innate to him specifically.
He is quite contemplative!
When I commented on "Suzanne ", I purposely avoided the 'Jesus verse' because I had been on a Suzanne forum where every long and winded interpretation was different! I concluded that anything I said would be my best guess. Decided that anyone who is serious about Neil's meaning should go talk to him. Otherwise, pure conjecture.

Hi Louise, Neil is truly an amazing person. Coming from a loving family who loved music, yet none with/from a musical background. A virtually unknown fledgling songwriter churning out lightweight pop-oriented songs in Tin Pan Alley; banging on doors for these songs to be accepted. A product of the commercially driven Brill Building (of flimsy pop songs; short songs with little intrinsic value). When did the change occur? How did it occur? What was the catalyst? Neil has in interviews past, indicated that the Beatles and the phenomenon that they were, provided a license for young, up-and-coming songwriters to depart from the tried and true format of commercial pop music. When/how did the transformation from lightweight bubble-gum rock to deep, introspective songs occur? Were these deeply meaningful, introspective material lying latent in the subconscious of the young songwriter, just aching to surface?
Unlike many a Neil Diamond fan who seek to label themselves as "Neil's greatest fan", I shy away from that. Don't see the need/reason to. Just a fan since 1971. Take care, Doug

It is this ability, which I believe contributes to his ability to make the songs of others... his own. The gift of a musical genius and coupled with being a perfectionist.
They say they that 'Into every life a little rain must fall, but , for some it rains every day....Feels like I'm in that place just now, but so are many more in this cruel and uncaring world .
Powerful song with lyrics written by the great Randy Newman, and performed with great empathy and heart by the great Neil Diamond, probably the best cover ever performed, though it's been tried well by great artists Nina Simone , Joe Cocker and Dusty Springfield, and Randy himself of course, Neil's version will always resonate with me the most. I read the notes as you suggested. And remembered the horrifying photo of that emaciated child in Sudan, taken during the 90's. I was so tortured by it then - for days. At first, I could not remember the news of the photographer taking his own life. But it came back to me. How sad. This life....

My reason? "I Am... I Said" . Heard this song on the radio a couple of times back in 1971, and I was hooked. I listened intently for the name of the singer and the song, and then headed out to my nearest music store. On arrival at the store, I discovered that this, to me then, unknown singer, had two albums (LPs). One was 'Sweet Caroline' and the other was 'Stones'. I then did something that I had never done before... I purchased not one, but both albums, my purchase being made solely on having heard only one song from this singer. This song so moved me...
"... I got an emptiness deep inside and I've tried but it won't let me go..."
The pain, the tortured cries. This was even more evident in 'I Am... I Said (Reprise)'. Neil's voice, his sincerity and pain, tugged at my heartstrings; he touched my soul. I felt his loss, his pain, for I too, was experiencing those emotions (The story's the same one). I was hooked... a fan for life.

The title expresses the, sadly as it is not a common enough occurrence in humanity, the disbelief that there are those who actually care for the less fortunate.... so.... "I think It's going to rain Today". A beautiful but sad song reflection the sad fact that many do not care for the less fortunate. As Mahatma Gandhi once said -
