Gunnar, I have split many types of feathers mostly waterfowl.. You might try pinching the base quill in your vice or clamp it to your table with a wood working clamp from the hardware store. And please, this is how I was taught by some great classic Atlantic tiers. when you begin the splitting process pull out and and away from the quill at approximately a 45 degree angle. Anyway, thanks for all of your great tutorial videos. Young may you have my admiration. you are one hell of a tier. Please keep it up. Kind regards
Nice tie , I guess I missed the swimming part . I know what you mean about being excited to tie . I was like that for a while and then started filling up a couple of salt water boxes and got in the groove and couldn’t stop . This will make a great Rooster fish fly , Thanks for sharing
Excellent Freestyle Fly Tying Friday fly. I really appreciate the trick with the ostrich. As usual your proportions and color and flash blending is top notch. Definitely something that I want to try when I get a fly tying desk set up at my new house 🏠
Great video, but I always associate Gunnar Brammer with names like Taylor and Popovics! Your style is based on their designs, but you have modified them and elevated to meet modern needs! August is also one of my personal favorites as well. Anyway, this fly is killer. It's a largemouth and striper destroyer when they are eating big shad. Feel free to send this one my way!!!! Keep these tying videos rolling.
Hi again Gunner! This is the third time I've watched this video and I'm still excited about making a similar fly. Say do you mind telling me where you got those hooks? I also love making big flies but I can't seem to be able to find large long shanked hooks like you're using here. Thanks Gunner! Tight lines brother!
Hi Gunner! Man this was a really great tie! And I just bought some ostridge and junglecock. I'm primarily a saltwater fisherman but sometimes fish freshwater. Do I need to change this recipe in any way to fish salt for bass or halibut? To refresh your memory I'm the 60vyear old man from California with spina bifida. And I recently won a grant to get a wheelchair that is basically for sand and hiking. I can't wait to get close to the water on the beach and near the lake! Thanks Gunner I always learn something useful from you. Take care!
Hi Gunner! Where did you get your junglecock feathers from? I can't find them except for on Amazon at ridiculous prices for just a few feathers? Great video! Bitchen!
Had a friend send me some "B" quality feathers - I've never purchased them either. It's a lot of $$$ for style points! The fake stuff is okay...but I am totally good with fishing naked flies (no eyes). Sticker eyes with Zap Goo is likely the best alternative, if you can deal with some head weight from the plastic - Posted Dome eyes with the posts cut short with Zap Goo work great in Bucktail.
Great video Gunnar! I'd definitely recommend August and Jason's IG highlights for anyone looking for ways to implement the technique. As for my experience stripping feathers, it is probably unnecessary but I nearly boil the water and take the additional step of Kool Aid/vinegar dyeing. That way I dye/strip simultaneously. 2 birds, one stone.
Thanks for sharing! Hope you have been busy with the Family and Fishing!

Great video Gunnar, can’t wait to tie this one up!
Great video/tie! Good to hear you are excited to be behind the vice again. Can't wait to see what you dive into next...
