    On the Z30, go to SETUP MENU and turn SELF PORTRAIT MODE - OFF. This will not disable features and buttons when screen is flipped around and allow you to see audio monitors. Works on Zfc too.

    Ordered the Z30. You talk about upping your game so exactly... you up your game with audio too and that means not using the on-board audio. I use a lapel mic and use the wireless system to monitor it so I am fine with the Z30 not having a headphone jack

    These videos unfortunately did not feel complete instead they felt like promotional presentations to sell these cameras. They didn't even talk about stabilization and these are VLOGGING cameras for god's sake. What about imagine quality? Low light performance? Can filters be attached to these lenses?

    Imo, Headphone jack are just bonus for a vlogging camera, maybe ideal for production type, not necessary for casual vlogging recording.

    The recording limit in 4k on the z30 could possibly be changed later in a firmware update. Nikon has done a great job with their updates with the z system. Another thing you didn't mention is that all of the z lenses were designed for video in mind. There's little to no focus breathing or chromatic aberration with their lenses and they're silent or close to it. That's not true with all of the Sony lenses. I've seen other videos where some of the UA-camrs complained about the Sony lenses for video use. That in itself can make a difference in video quality. No one wants to see pulsing in their video from focus breathing issues.

    As a filmmaker, I naturally prefer shooting in 24fps as opposed to 30fps. Not just because 24fps is closer to what the human eye sees, but, motion blur is more accurate in 24fps. Not only that, but, I find that 30fps has a more "soap opera" digital look to the footage. It just doesn't look that natural. Footage shot at 30fps will never look cinematic because of that artificial digital look. It's a mistake to think that just because you're watching a video online that 30fps is better. It's not. Shooting in 24fps makes a huge difference in the quality and natural look of the footage.

    The Nikon also has a dedicated AE-L/AF-L button at the rear. Their photography heritage still show. I agree that Sony got the audio aspects down pat and it shows their progession into video/content creation.
    I've been a Nikon DSLR user for a while and I still love Nikon colors and ergonomics.
    Was going to shift to Sony because of their third-party support especially for the Tamron 17-70/2.8 but now that Nikon has opened up their Z-mount like Fuji did with theirs, I'm inclined to get the Z30.
    Will most likely wait for a Z50ii though.

    I love the Z30. I bought it less than a week ago, and its video is incredible for my interview filming with Røde Wireless Go II. But I must shout out loud: FORGET ABOUT BATTERIES! The only thing working is a battery Volt pack plugged directly into the camera while filming. For me, it worked like a dream. I took the third video this Monday, and I forgot charging, and in less than 10 minutes, the battery went from full, to red alert (only 1920 x 1080, 24 Fps). I have a lot of sunglasses, and most come with a cloth bag with a string. Perfect for attaching to the tripod with charging.

    Anyone who is recording themselves or other on this type of camera should use a lav mic. Onboard mic, even if it’s a shotgun is only really good for environmental sound. So you need something like the Rode Go, which has a headphone output on the receiver (that sits in the hot shoe on the camera). So the headphone output isn’t really that much of a problem if you’re using this a vlogging camera. A lav mic is essential, more important than any spec on the camera. You can shoot on a potato if you have great sound.

      the problem with the Sony ZVe 10 is that it looks faded, washed out a bit, like it loses saturation.

    Great video but 2 reasons ZV-E10 is better imo: 1. Sony's Catalyst software takes gyroscope data and stabilizes the footage incredibly well in post processing, its almost like having a gimbal. 2. Sony has MUCH better APSC lens selection, Nikon has almost NONE, it doesn't make sense to buy bulky expensive full frame lenses for these cameras.

They will use the audio sound bars display on screen to make sure the levels are not clipping. Adobe Enhance which is free online can fix any bad audio, if by chance they are in a noisy environment. The Nikon has loads of features over the Sony ZV-E10, and also better digital stabilization better than the Sony, which Think Media did a video on. yes the Z30 is the first Z camera besides the Z9 to allow over 30 minutes. the 125 and 35 minutes are Nikon’s published limits at 25°C / 77°F ambient temperature. I would not call those unlimited, but rather good case limits and the actual may vary on your situation. if you need to record an hour continuous 4K video, the Z30 won’t do that. the A74 video has no video length limit in the software, but you can see on other UA-cam videos at 4K60 can overheat and shut down in certain scenarios. if you have to reliably record long 4K videos, the Panasonic GH5 works well, never had any problems. will continue experimenting with the Z30 to see how it stacks up. so no Nikon Z camera has an unlimited internal recording time limit unless you record to an external HDMI recorder like Atomos.

  • @Lofote
    @Lofote 2 роки тому +4

    So I found your roundup very strange. You only pointed out things about the camera itself, like the missing headphone jack etc. But you didn't mention one of the much more important things: both are not standalone devices but systems. And the lens is a very VERY important factor here. And here Nikon just doesn't bring you any choices except the kit lens that is wide enough plus also small enough. Sony has all those APS-C ultra wide angles which are super handy, plus Sigma and Tamron and even Zeiss (Touit) add their lenses as well with great options.
    As many always say: lenses are much more important than the camera, and this seems to be quite ignored here (or just put into some sentences here). It should be in the final conclusion because right now the Nikon really does not bring you any option and is quite limited due to it. Of couse in some years this might be different, but this is a far road right now with Nikon also having to concentrate on full frame lens developments.

      @@Damon_Mah Uhm, and you want to do that for a vlog camera? Especially since ultra wide angle DSLR lenses are much bigger than mirrorless due to the large flange distance, .. plus the adapter size? That is not practical at all ;)...

      I use my light (8 oz), compact, and inexpensive Nikon AF-P 10-20mm DX lens on the Z30 if I need wider than the 16-50mm kit lens, which is rare for the videos I do, works fine. If you don’t want to use an adapter, get the inexpensive, fast Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 Z-mount.

    Sony gives you a headphone jack nobody uses, and a touchscreen that's completely worthless. Sony's great autofocus and catalyst browse stability are major features to consider, as well as their color profile options. On the other hand, Nikon's touchscreen interface, menus and control dials are way better, plus the kit lens is superior.

    I'm more of a photographer than videographer, so the Nikon optics make this an easy choice. That said, I'd get the Zfc instead. The EVF should be on the camera. It's NOT a cell phone.

    • @barnazadori9227
      @barnazadori9227 Рік тому

      U are right on the EVF part, I'd also miss it too, but the tilting screen on the Z50 is a joke after even the D3xxx series low-end entry cameras have fully articulated screens. This was a dealbreaker for me as a product photographer as I need to adjust composition IN FRONT of the camera, so I need to be able to see what's going on.
      Otherwise I'd have also picked the Z50 because of the viewfinder.
      The inbuilt flash should also always be lacking in this cameras IMO.

    I just got mine and did a "real" review (in the sense that I'm just an average person, not a pro review/retailer/site):
    ua-cam.com/video/9xUQCX-rp4o/v-deo.html
    What I'd say about the headphone jack that you harp on, if you're just one person (not someone filming you) you're not going to put headphones on while doing that to monitor anyway lol Then, if you were to start having someone record you or care that much more about audio, you'd use an external recorder anyway which would have monitoring.
    Same with EVF, for photography it's important, for video nobody looks through the view finder. This camera is focused on video, not photography.
    I think they did a great job with it, anyone that is looking at this camera specifically as a step up from phone/gopro/etc. is going to love it, so don't let the pro reviewers complaining about missing features let you down.

    • @mikeblack_pw
      @mikeblack_pw 2 роки тому +4

      " for video nobody looks through the view finder" You sure about that? I do. For run and gun or bright situations or in the absence of a mono or tripod, (elbows tucked in, two hands on the camera and looking through the view finder), it's very handy to shoot video through the EVF.

    The one thing Z30 lacks is a threaded hole for tripod on the grip for vertikal shooting. Except the things you mentioned.
    EDIT: doesn't that Sennheiser mic you are using have a monitor out? It does not monitor record level from camera, but at least it monitor what sound the microphone picks up ...
    EDIT 2: I could actually consider a Z30 as a B-camera for my recordings. Today I record video with two Z6II, both have limited recording time ... and it is har to see the screen on camera 2 from the position I normally stay at, behind camera 1. With this camera (Z30) I could see the tally and flip the screen ...
