Competition is GOOD in the competitive game industry, perhaps many of the problems with Overwach in the last 6-7 years is we've not really had a really competitor in the hero shooter environment... what do you guys think?
I completely agree! If there is no challenge to their product then why try being better when they’re the only option in that category of gaming? I’m hoping the full game will be good so that overwatch will need to make some important updates for both games to be enticing.
Idk If competing with overwatch is really a thing at this point the community is so loud and toxic. (As seen with paladins back when that debate was crazy). And all the overwatch players left are the hard core old head. I don't think marvel rivals will be able to poach any of those guys But alot of people have left overwatch over the years. Marvel rivals might be able to build a new playerbase from all the players that tried and quit/gave up on overwatch.
@@barksonicagreed with the ranked grind, but the meta is definitely more fun now. And even before this patch, the fcar being strong is something I'll take over for example the grenade launcher being strong
@@Ori_fr I don't disagree with that, but it lost most of its players from nuke meta, shields being broken, and recon being literal mapwide wallhacks. They've done great things to balance or remove them now but sadly most of the playerbase was already gone.

@bighorn6964 Not really. I have awful aim but Punisher's shotgun just has an insanely good hitbox so I can easily delete any character with 1-2 clicks
@loselot6044 then u have good aim then. As panther or magic I smack alot of punishers. Punisher requires aim and if u have bad aim u aren't gonna kill someone in 2 hits.
More competition is always better. Hopefully this makes the Overwatch devs feel a well-needes breath in their necks to know they are no longer unchallenged.
Exactly, I disagreed with everything he said basically. Destructible environments is just flair, you do a big boom and walls come down, its cool. Being "bored of marvel" doesnt make much sense to me, all marvel characters are pretty different in my eyes. You either like a character or the movie or you dont, you dont watch Cap America and say you hate it because you dont want to see Thor anymore, or like you dont want to watch Agatha All Along because you thought Loki was boring. Like fundamentally different experiences. Also his arguments about first and 3rd person made no sense, and kept calling it a first person shooter...which its not.
@@scotttimbrell8632 destructible environments are annoying when it comes back in the middle of a brawl, and being tired of marvel's overproduction of slop is a fair point lol
@@notatfaccount Destructible enviroments make little to no difference due to how the maps work, character mobility and how easy they are destroyed. If youre stuck in it, then youre fundamentally missing brain cells. They also respawn after a few seconds of them telling you they are respawning, if that affects your gameplay then its a skill issue, and if someone escapes due to it then fair play to them, thats just like any mechanic ever. Marvel is a universe expanding decades, saying its overproduced slop because multiple people are making multiple movies about various different characters is like saying you are sick of horror films because people are making them. Its too broad and utterly stupid statement to make by haters of Marvel, rather than basing it off individual films. Can some films be bad? Sure, have there been amazing films? Yes absolutely, but saying all Marvel films are bad because you disliked Black Widow, whilst ignoring Captain America Winter Soldier is disingenuous and completely rejects peoples personal like for the only universe to work well and span over 10 years. If anything, media like DvW, Spiderman 3, AaA, Loki S2, GotG3 has shown that there are a lot of high quality material coming out that a lot of fans would have missed out on. So its not a fair point anymore, as long as they continue the root of Quality over quantity and keep LGBTQ bs out of it, it will be fine.

The midnight suns card game was decent but it looks like they don't want to cough up the capital to make this more expensive game happen. It seems patchwork in a way that Overwatch never has been. But it's early access done wrong again. I expect nothing more tbh, they might find a diamond somewhere in this rough game but I'm not waiting for it.
Its gonna fail, the marvel ip will carry it for abit unlike all the previous 3rd person overwatch clones that had their own ip, but arena style shooters dont work in 3rd person, they never have and never will otherwise at this point in the gaming industries life span, we would have at least 1 super popular one since theres been so many attempts at a 3rd person overwatch game, and yea we dont see one anywhere even competing with paladins, like the second and 3rd best premade kit hero shooter games like overwatch are both also 1st person and that should tell you by itself that this genre is just better in 1st person. As overwatch leads the charge with tf2 in second and paladins in 3rd place, and than even 4th place is probably taken by battleborn which isnt even playable atm but the amount of people supporting it as the fanbase tries to get it back up and going is bigger than any 3rd person overwatch like game on the market atm which is unbelievably sad for 3rd person overwatch clones 😂😭
No Sniper characters is the real selling point for me. I've been playing hero shooters my whole life starting with tf2. Even in tf2 sniper is the best class and the most cancerous to play against, it's the same feeling I get with widowmaker.
As a lifetime Marvel fan (and former Marvel writer), as well as a player of Overwatch since day 1 OW1, I have to say this was a great review! I do disagree with you regarding the voice acting, though. I think the VAs all did a fantastic job with the voice lines in Rivals. I especially love a lot of the back and forth between the characters and hope that they continue to add more such lines in future!

Your insight about cooldowns has been exactly what i was saying, but about Xdefiant, the new fps ""cod killer". Almost every single ability has a 45-1min cooldown and it feels terrible to play.
@christopher7692 I disagree. There are factions, abilities, and ultimates that swing teamfights in your favor. If the game wasn't ability focused, they wouldn't be in the game. Either cooldowns need to be lower, or ttk should be higher. The game is awkward and clunky otherwise
@@PryncessTempest they're meant to be impactful, they're not meant to dictate every fight, or even every other fight. Having abilities on shorter cooldowns would be an active detriment to much of the playerbase that they have targeted
long cooldowns can works in fps focused on gunplay, look at destiny, even tho its generally not great pvp game, it makes sense why some grenades have 2 min cooldowns
Well his argument really only applies to Dr Strange's Portal, which isnt an active ability that you would use every fight or so anyway. I find that most of the cooldowns in the game are extremely lax and the best thing about this game is the freedom that OW doesnt give. OW has extremely limited and boring kits where as Rivals is incredibly free, Mobility characters are more mobile than Overwatch ones, tanks have more abilities to be tanky than OW and dps have more interesting damage designs than OW does. Cooldowns really isnt the issue. Then you factor in the fact that a lot of characters have more than the 2-3 abilities that OW has. Dr Strange has a left click, a dash, a shield, a portal and a charge up explosion, a lot of his kit is defensive and thats fine, thats his play style, having a 2 minute global portal would be annoying af and then Spilo will just be complaining about that, then that will be nerfed or removed, and then we have OW but with Marvel characters and I dont want that.
Regarding Hulk, he was my second most played hero during the alpha, and my favorite tank to play. I agree that his jump is very clunky, though you can actually charge it while taking other actions. Hold down spacebar while fighting, and then let go to immediately leap back out without needing to wait for the windup time. I dunno why they make you charge it up in the first place though. There needs to be a better way to aim it too, especially if you want to use it to knock flying heroes out of the sky. There was also something else in his kit that wasn't referred to anywhere in his bio page where it shows you all his skills. Hulk can cling to walls. You can't use any skills while doing so, and you can't crawl or run up them like other characters. But you can leap from wall to wall. I learned about that skill the very last day of the alpha, when I saw an enemy Hulk do it. Didn't really get any time to mess around with it before the alpha ended tho. But yeah, good video. Lots of good points made. Me personally, I enjoyed playing Marvel Rivals more than I've ever enjoyed playing Overwatch, and I can't wait to see how they implement all the player feedback in their beta.
Re: Long cooldowns. These shorter shooter matches don't have the extra map components (farming xp/gold, neutral creeps/bosses, warding, etc.) that allow for this amount of ability downtime. It is JUST the teamfight all game. The incredible strength of this portal is going to feel unpredictable to play around since it's going to be used as a single outplay, hard for the enemy to track because of its infrequent cooldown and potentially subtle nature. So Dr Strange has this niche, teammate reliant ability that is useless for 3 minutes at a time but has comically overpowered strength when used well. So it feels bad for the doctor to be gimped for a couple fights but also feels bad/overtuned because its mere existence imposes a steeply asymmetrical need for vigilance on the enemy team. Compare this to Dota's Underlord who has almost the exact same ability but is playing a larger map with many varied objectives so that Underlord doesnt have this gaping downtime on a key part of his kit. He simply doesnt need this ability for every occasion. Dr is using his ability for a teamfight advantage. Underlord's portal is highly situational: grouping for fights, punctual escapes/kiting potential, split-push/farming, deep chases and more. I think the doctor only checks off two of these(deep chases and teamfight leverage), as its use as an escape is limited by the nature of the game mode. Why would you blow a 300 second cooldown on an escape from a lost objective? The dota mini-map and unfixed perspective justifies Underlord's existence as he is detectable within allied vision anywhere on the map. His strengths(and thus his available roles) aren't hard to plan around and compliment each other. Dr's 300 second ability is susceptible to wall hack abilities. I'm not sure how many there are or will be in Rivals, though. That said, since Dr's portal is going to be centered around two points in a 3d space (obj and the other team) this counter method is.....weird/bad when you consider youre picking a hero to beat a niche 300 second cooldown ability.
Preach. I keep wishing DOTA could be distilled into 10-15 minute games. I used to play quite a bit but the 50+ minute games got more exhausting, and drew out so much more toxicity than a pretty quick game. Still one of my favorites with an awesome comp scene (I moved on 4+ years ago so maybe it all sucks now)
@@dashvash5440 They have great overhaul patches. One just dropped giving every hero a choice of two "facets" that changes their playstyle. It looks very different now. I quit for the same reasons. Match length wouldn't be so bad, but the player base thinks the optimal way to win is to get to mid game then throw all your gold away pushing mid for 25 minutes then flame the guys actually taking objs in the right order. This is the dominant playstyle from herald to legend (sometimes divine). Legitimately the only times I won that game was if just one other guy on the team helped push creep waves.
but youre just wrong though, Dr Strange is a fun character and youre not just sat there wondering when a portal will come off cooldown. Its a play making ability that ushers your team into using it for multiple reasons that are all incredibly strong. It has absolutely no downsides other than the cooldown and doesnt hinder Dr Strange if he cant use it. Dr Strange was 1 of the most played and powerful Tanks in the game.....and he has 2 abilities and a left click. Factor that into your "well thought out" paragraph.
@@josephreynolds2401 My paragraph was well reasoned. You're wrong because the game proves you're wrong. It doesn't show what you're saying. Undoubtedly Dr Strange was one of the most fun, interesting and powerful characters in the beta, rivalling every other tank other than Venom and in some cases Magneto. You compare the fact that he was so popular despite his kit literally being a shield, a dash and the occasional burst, you can't really put your finger on it. Portal was a game changer in both the genre and in game, it's extremely impressive having an ability that's able to do that and it being an ability instead of an Ultimate enhances the gameplay by allowing Dr Strange players an actual playmaking ultimate that they have their own agency to use, instead of relying on teammates to flank. The long cooldown does nothing to prevent Dr Strange from being fun or powerful and the fundamental design of kits being able to have more than the standard amount of abilities allows these sort of abilities to be in the game. Watch any Dr Strange gameplay and watch how when it's off cooldown, it's used well and when it's on cooldown it barely affects the gameplay Dr Strange allows. In one line you say it's team orientated and in the next you say the character Is gimped, well what is it? Does the character have agency when using this 1 ability or is it entirely relying on teammates to be good?
Slightly off topic, but I hate how ppl act like overwatch invented/owns the hero shooter genre, and that ppl get mad at moba abilitys being good in a "shooter" even though the hero shooter sub genre is a mix of both mobas and shooters
I get super irritated by people acting like any new OW character with high CC, or weird/unique abilities as their focus instead of gunplay, are somehow a game breaking thing that takes away from the experience and doesn't fit with an FPS because it just ignores the genre of Overwatch entirely. When the game first came out the magic that drew me in to begin with was the fact that it wasn't some dull overly realistic COD game, and instead it was my first chance to use a bunch of cool ass MOBA abilities from the first person perspective and have an FPS with tons of cool and varied characters instead of one blank stand-in character with an AK-47 for everyone to use at once.
yeah but the problem with moba abilities is that blizzard can't seem to implement them without moba visuals. massive flashy effects just don't work that well in a first person or over the shoulder third person game. also hero/class/whatever shooters aren't inherently moba-like, overwatch specifically just takes more design cues from mobas than most games. just because valorant has moba abilities doesn't mean that's inherent to the tac shooter genre. i do agree that these sort of abilities are inseparable from overwatch though
@@boinqity4621 I can agree that they haven't done the best job of implementing them visually in the sense of making them identifiable in big fights. It seems like they have mentioned a desire to fix that recently, and have taken a few small steps. Main thing I think needs to be done is just making sure that effects which apply to people are visually distinct or maybe they can design some more symbols which float on health bars to indicate everything. Lil fire balls for burning, Shields for fortify and armor granting stuff, a heart for cardiac etc etc.
It would have been nice if you explained in more detail why destructble envrionments is a negative. It sounds dynamic and immersive to me. And unlike eating/hunger as a game mechanic it doesn't require grinding, it just happens dynamically/consequently.
Magneto's utility for me was to kill their Luna Snow during their ult. I was playing in games with Necros, Bogur, ML7, KarQ so it wasn't like beginner games, there were some really useful things with magneto, I think he's a fantastic offtank if your team is working with ground LOS and Groot is not a useful assistance for your team. This is what I noticed after playing him for a majority of the alpha.
I think the concept behind destructible landscape is really cool. I havent played the game, but imagine a TDM mode where you have rotating spawns; taking out some highground that the enemy is using, in a couple minutes comes back to bite your team in the ass since you can no longer using it yourself. I think it's a cool concept that they could absolutely play into better if they made the destruction permanent.
i think it could be fun but if the game wants to be competitive was is and isnt destructible has to be really obvious, like r6s for example. there should be strategies to it not just everything around you breaks, but were also not at the phase were those strats have been developed so we;ll see

@@ConciseCabbage 100%. That and the projectile size changes in season 9 are a joke. What's the point in even improving if your shots hit regardless of whether you miss or not.
I agree with majority of what you say, as always. aside from a couple things Strange: the close range on E is fine. getting close wasnt that difficult, your dmg pressure gets them low and have to break LoS, then u can walk up. your 2 tap leaves them very low and so that explo is the finisher. Kinda like sigma, hes a ranged tank but wanted to get closer to rock 1 shot combo (when he could do that). Its also a key part of when you ult cuz it does double dmg and will just instantly team wipe off a good ult. Hulk: yes clunky but gotta give props to the anti flyer potential, something winston struggles with Loki: how can u not even mention that he has lamp on steroids :(
I think the biggest difference between the two games is that tank characters have a ton of choices, utilities, and options on their own. Which leads to a ton of 1/3/2's as far as the gameplay goes. It does work if your tank can do enough damage, but overall the tanks themselves are all sigma/rammatra.
Thats my main draw. Player agency. Youre playing for yourself. Making your own plays. In Overwatch you counter the enemy in all aspects. Ow is a worse game fundamentally due to this. In MR you will hardly ever need to swap because your pick is bad, or busted against their character, you can play who you want and have fun doing so.
Just by the look of it, the impact of the combat looks like the combat in WoW, you swing at the air and then see a number goes down, maybe it's different when you actually play it, but man from the videos hot damn it looks cheap.
Less an OW2 killer than an opportunity for each game to improve in his peculiar spot . The only victim here being Paladins to which OW has often been compared ( but to be honest , Hi Rez kinda killed its own game years ago ) .
I feel like you are comparing more then necessary there are certain charecters that are completely different from overwatch like penny who dosent resemble deva at all and hulk is decent its just that you dont know how to play
While I do agree with the cooldowns being shorter, I think that there can be exceptions to the rule. With doctor strange his kit feels good even without the portal. And the portal feels more like a mini ult. I don’t really see anything wrong with it tbh
Its literally just Dr Strange he was on about. Literally everyone in the game has 1-2 second cooldown on every ability. Its amazing in fact and the saving grace against a limited game like Overwatch, where if Winston was in MR he would have 3 jumps on a 2 second cooldown cycle. Tracer would have unlimited dashes and move faster at full hp and Solider would have no recoil. Dr Stranges Portal is only good and only fun because its on an E on a 3minute cooldown, I would rather that, putting another ability in his kit else where (The corruption build up) and allow his ult to be meta defining. Its also funny how he said everyone has aoe boom ults whilst showing Hulk on screen saying more characters should have a winston ult. Okay Spilo.
Marvel Rivals will likely be a flash in the pan. Rivals is going to draw fans of the genre (hero/moba shooter) who want to try something new, and Marvel fans who want to try a new Marvel game, that will end up as fans of the shooter genre. THEN unless Rivals absolutely decimates OW2 from a playability perspective, the most likely outcome is that Rivals eventually dies, and OW2 has new players introduced to the genre by Rivals.
@@nahaight1373The only guy coping here is you. If you think that a cheap clone made by the greediest company in the market is gonna last for more than a couple of months you are insane
If any of you decide to main hulk like myself, remember, when anyone on the enemy team is flying, they can be tackled out of the air when jumping. I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to tackle Scarlett Witch out of her ult.
correction: *people who watch movies are tired of marvel* . i dont so im excited to play as marvel characters. it takes me back to the 90s and early 2000s when super hero video games were peak. destructible environments should only be a feature in non-competitive modes. overwatch voice lines have an edgy undertone. everything is moody and post apocalyptic. but in marvel, its light, humorous, and positive as heck. i like it that way. i actually wish i could turn off voice lines in overwatch. i agree about regenerating health. screen border colors need a toggle off (overstimulation/visual clutter). in terms of hero abilities, you could take off 1 ability from most heroes and give it to upcoming heroes. some feel way too kitted, like punisher, for example. take away his turret and he still has a shotgun, smokes, a grapple, an ar, and a powerful ult. overall, im done with overwatch and have been looking for a similar game, tbh. i will be sinking time into rivals.
Watching the gameplay and others peoples commentary, imho this doesnt feel at all like competition to overwatch. The gameplay concept is far... different? this game looks extremely chaotic. Looks far more closer to what Gigantic was. Also like Spilo said, Super Hero fatigue is a thing, and nice to see im not only one extremely tired to see Spiderman,Dr Strange,Hulk etc all over again. This game feels coud last a year then shut down, also NetEase... So far,the only one that could give competition to overwatch is the game that got leaked from Valve. Valve is well know to create very compealing characters, and bring interesting changes gameplay wise when they create a game (Yes,for how much people hated Artifact, their approach to the card game was interesting and far different than the others).
I feel the same, but we all must remenber that it is a alpha still, it's success depend solely on how they address the feedback, otherwise i think it will be a unfun game, faster than overwatch.
valve's upcoming game is a moba. how is that comparable to current state ow2? also, i see the publisher netease slander get thrown around a lot. but naraka bladepoint is still going strong with over 100k online steam right now... and they also have drastically improved dead by daylight mobile. so ive seen decent results from them.
The game definitely looks fun, and I'm for sure gonna try it out when it releases. However, I don't see myself playing it long term for a couple reasons: - Movement acceleration: Overwatch 2's movement is instant and feels snappy. Paladins also has movement acceleration, and it just feels awkward to play. - No role lock: There was nothing worse back in OW1 than queueing up in comp only to get 6 dps players on a team. Role lock is absolutely needed in a game like this. - Visual clutter: This one might not be as bad as I think. I feel like the more you play the less overwhelming it will all feel. We've all seen the videos of 2 mauga ults, sym ults etc. at the same time, but since we've played the game for so long we can still navigate those situations. The visual clutter may just be something that takes time to get used to. - Voice lines: I've watched quite a few people play the game, and the voice lines are just way too frequent. The voice acting quality is kinda whatever to me (Spider-Man's VA Yuri Lowenthal is still goated tho)
Lack of movement acceleration has been the bane of overwatch's balance from the very start. All characters at base have scout(tf2) level movement without any of the acceleration that prevents AD spamming from being as effective as it is. If you want an example of how this is unhealthy for the game just look at hammond, an already low damage character who's primary fire basically requires 60% headshots to be effective and see how long it takes for him to kill an AD spamming baptiste. What you'll find is the reason hurt boxes were enlarged and why so many heros have some sort of stun effect, Spamming projectile, or someway to completely bypass needing to shoot at all. Mei had her freeze and now her slow because it mitigates the impact of non-existent movement acceleration. Torbjorn and Symettra were both heavily reliant on their turrets in the early days because the devs needed heros that didn't rely on aim to heavily. Projectile characters are largely spammy mess of characters because they will inevitably miss so many of their shots because opponents can just swap directions in an instant. Moria has her meme beam so that she doesn't have to focus on trying to hit jittery flanks that constantly flank. Brigitte's EVERYTHING from her most toxic meta defining moments to her lowest pick rates have been a result of characters that can effectively abuse the lack of movement acceleration needing a dedicated counter just because of how oppressive they were. This system also fucks over tanks quite a bit because now they're the only target most players will be able to hit consistently. The game conditions them to focus tanks even harder than it already does. Tanks get focused harder to supports are buffed to out heal the damage but now it's even harder to kill a normal hero when their pocketed because they can just AD spam and heal off the hits they do get. Repeat the vicious cycle to today. If you want an even more egregious example of how lack of movement acceleration can hurt a game just look at high level COD gameplay. Without acceleration it turns into a weightless miss of sprinting full speed in one direction than just flicking to another without any slowdown. It's essentially the opposite of CS's movement which is still being played to this day largely in part because of it's excellent use of weighty movement acceleration. The point of this rant is to point how we really shouldn't be using lack of movement acceleration as a positive.
@@robotrannicthesurprisingly9085yes i agree completely, paladins does feel awkward and clunky but its not because of the movement acceleration. the game just has clunky kits that they never cleaned up.
@@revan3270 Role lock is his ownly good point. Having a support rage switch to a dps and effectively instantly make you defeat is laughable. I hope MR can survive without the 2-2-2 meta, but lets be honest, its going to be 1-5-0
Why say something is bad game design for a FPS when Marvel Rivals is NOT an FPS. FPS means "First Person Shooter" and Marvel Rivals is third person game and much closer to a MOBA than a FPS. It feels like you think of it as an FPS in order to compare it more to Overwatch. Just because a game has shooting doesn't make it an FPS.
it’s a 3rd person fps, jk, i think he means to say shooter because the criticisms listed in this video still apply regardless of the players perspective
"this character is bad for fps game" It sounds like 3rd person games are just not for you which is perfectly fine but it seems like you have no grasp of why someone might like 3rd person more than an fps
Plus its not even supported. He said he played for 10 hours. And with the gameplay he showed, it seems like he had no idea what he was doing. Dr Strange was one of the best tanks in the game, rivalling Venom and Magneto for the top spot, all with having practically 2 abilities. So his "you cant have a 3 minute cooldown" is just so utterly bs. He coaches Overwatch, he only knows Overwatch and even then its questionable to his actual accomplishments.
The old heads will still be playing OW but most people that are not really connecting with the game or stopped playing bc of OWs issues will prob find a good home in rivals, I don’t see the comp scene going crazy in this game and that’s ok with me I’m just looking for a fun game to get me and the boys back on a team work based game
2:20 huh? Literally everyone I talk to about rivals agrees the the heroes in rivals seem to have way more depth and flash to their kits then overwatch characters. So calling them dry is absolutely wild to me.
magiks dash goes slightly to the left of the cursor because of the third person thing going to the right and it can be very annoying when your cursor is right on the enemy and you just go past them
I haven't had the chance to play any of the new hero shooters, but of Rivals, Deadlock, and Strinova, I'd probably choose Deadlock. The problem is that I really trust neither of those devs to support their games probably. I love Valve, but apart from Dota 2, and CSGO/2, it seems like they just .. Kind of stop caring about their own games after a while. Obviously, my real hope is that Blizzard manages to actually support Overwatch better.
Personally, Im already over the marvel fatigue. A lot of the characters are cool and interesting and im not gonna let the MCU ruin that enjoyment for me. Dr Strange is a cool character, I dont care much anymore. I dont read comics, i dont even watch recaps or anything. I just like the character conceptually and him being an overwatch esque tank appeals to me. Im sure people will have characters they kinda like, and i think the roster they chose was actually very overwatch-like. extremely diverse and charismatic characters. We have some cute girls, some badass dudes. Big muscle guys, fast and assassin like characters. Animals, monsters. And many different personalities and ethnicities to see. I think they did a great job choosing characters. They could easily just choose nothing but popular characters but they really gave us a diverse cast to choose from. Diverse in this case isnt just about race before any freak ass people respond to me, its also just in general character design
Had fun playing quick play with you G hope this game stays as fun as it was in alpha. Obviously not perfect nor an OW killer but I genuinely enjoyed it Also Groot wall heals? Lmfao I had no idea
I had the same thought immediately with Dr Strange's portal and any other similarly long CD. For a CD to be 3 minutes long, it has to be so strong it can secure fight wins near single handedly to justify that cooldown, but now you gave a hero a cd that can near single handedly win fights! Now consider that within the context of a full kit. Either the hero is OP because they have a solid kit and every 3 minutes they can choose to win a fight, or they suck because they are bad for 3 minutes then choose to win one fight with their insane mega cooldown. Its just a really bad design idea
Honestly I am in the first category I am just sick of the super hero genre as a whole. I like overwatch because even in a world with a talking ape and a giant genius hamster things feel more relatable.
Re: 3rd person perspective, I think the feedback of actually seeing the abilities and projectils make contact with the player's hitbox provides valuable clarity, something Overwatch might consider if it weren't so zippy. I dont know, is there a Rivals hero that matches tracer/genji in terms of zippyness? How does that feel in the 3rd person perspective? How do the heroes interacting with zippy heroes feel(I think the 3rd person perspective favors flanked heroes more than OW's flanked heroes , IDK tho)? That said, seeing your own hero's body get smacked by effects is truer to the Moba experience (smite/paragon) that Overwatch plays footsy with. I think future Overwatch content/design should consider large characters hitboxes and how it feels to get pummeled by every single damage type in the game from multiple directions. Not knowing what or why something bad happened to you is pretty bad vibes. A post-death dmg/healing report for the last 3-6 seconds would help players(tank especially) control their health pool more. It would also help the playerbase get visual feedback on what damage types are most effective in an individual match. It's a small UI change that would go a long way as the tank player manages all these dmg sources throughout the game. Consider that the OW tank is the most responsible for self-HP/mitigation trading and space-creation. OW tanks are arguably the closest relatives to Moba Champs. This common Moba feature would help diligent/smart players manage their macro and Swap gameplay better. It would also passively teach casual players about damage typing. This feature is never overbearing or pushy and takes a mere moment to read.
Starlord or spiderman are probably the ones you're looking for. Starlord is Tracer with reaper Ult instead of recall (less dmg than reaper ult) and Spiderman is Genji with widow Hook
There’s an obvious memory leak in the game somewhere because the longer you play the more RAM it uses. after like an hour it becomes a genuine risk to your pc if you don’t have 10000 gb of ram
Good review but I def think the Overwatch bias and Marvel dislike definitely came through (like you said it would). Although to be fair a lot of people who LOVED the game were big big marvel fans so they probably had marvel tinted glasses. Overall solid review.
I dunno man if we can trust your video game experience over the other Rivals streamers. I mean, I dunno who to listen to. video game coach and professional bedhead hair model... or [TTS]MarvelFan360nosco streaming at 240p who hit rank 1 Starlord in Rivals ranked first 6 minutes after the game launched. I DUNNO....THIS IS A TOUGHIE... J/k, love your stuff. Was waiting to hear your view on this game. BTW, I know the starting map pool was small but towards the end it seemed hella bugged. Did you happen to notice same mode/map 5, 10 + times ion a row. On Samitos stream, You'd swear his lobby got banished to the shadowrealm of Thor-land payload for 6 hours Edit: about the voice acting. Nothing is going to "kill" Overwatch. That said, this game is meant for me. OW is my favorite game and I absolutely love Marvel. So much that even tho I hate reading I got into the comics recently.
I still love paladins more! I love the item in game shop of paladins to help against counter over swap heroes of overwatch. I hate the long q times on paladins. Imagine an item shop and locked in heroes for overwatch. :)
I remember overwatch was called the tf2 killer which it kinda did but now tf2 is full of bots so I'm hoping ow2 doesn't get left behind the same way valve left their game behind
@@dogidogediggidydogedd957 I'm sorry to tell you, TF2 died a long time ago, the devs are way too lazy and the only "content" they add is lootboxes. The bot situation is just another nail in the coffin.
As a whole I really enjoyed it. I hope they have better maps in store for us. The maps felt like knock off overwatch maps. Give us Baxter tower, avengers tower, wakanda, the raft, and the helicarrier.
I disagree with the “is it fun? Then that’s all that matters” Overwatch 2 and blizzard have been able to nickel and dime their player base while offering a disrespectful amount of value. Matchmaking is busted, content is dry. Here is why there needs to be an Overwatch killer. It breeds competition. Overwatch 2 is allowed to be this bad because there is no other game challenging it. So yea, it matters if it’s better. Because that’s the only hope that OW players will have for it ever getting better.
Not only do I like Marvel heroes but I dislike or at least do not prefer first person in shooters. It makes it feel cheaper and takes away fun animations. I’m pretty excited to play this.
29:35 OK but if we fix this problem, then you’re creating the same problem that overwatch has. The problem is thinking that every character has to be fun for everyone to play. I don’t agree with people who think every character should be strong in every situation, but I do agree that most characters should be strong in enough situations. but now we have situations where, when a new character is added to overwatch if that character isn’t considered fun by everyone’s standards, then they’re made basically useless. realistically for a hero shooter to be good. Everyone should be able to find at least three characters that they find fun to play and that they are good Ed, and or are able to master and each of their three characters should have enough diversity that they won’t struggle no matter what situation they come up against. When the game has roll cue, it should be three characters per roll. some people will always find certain characters boring, but the problem is expecting every character to be fun to everyone or that they will Nerf a character that is only fun to some people.
The game is on a knife edge where if they buff the wrong things (e.g. black panther, tanks) the game will immediately go to trash. It's fun right now because none of the gimmicky moba abilities are so strong that they ruin the game.
I think we underestimate how big this game is going to be. Marvel is already a bigger IP than blizzard, and it has more normie appeal. You don't have to learn a new character and story. You already probably have your favorite superheroes you want to play.
This game was fun, flaws in balance made the last few days rough. Ran into stacks with Punisher+dmg amp. It felt like Nano mercy boosted Soldier 76 running around. Groots infinite walls were also tiresome.
Haven't played it myself as I didn't get a key in time. BUT I watched a lot of streamers playing it. Without a doubt Rivals seems to have a bad memory leak or something. I watched this game bring top tier gaming PCs to their knees. The visuals are far from enough to do that so there's obviously some optimization issues with the game.
I think a fundamental mistake is being made here: this is not a first person or third person shooter. This is a straight up MOBA with some shooter elements. Your can’t really think of this In relation to a fps game like overwatch. A much closer comparison would be something like Battenborn or gigantic, or possibly even smite. I’m really not sure how this comparison really can be made when the gameplay systems are so fundamentally different, at least when the focus comes to combat and character design. In a MOBA, certain design mechanics that couldn’t exist in a shooter have their place. So this all seems very off-putting of a comparison to me
You can't frame destructible environments as gimmicky in an esports environment, then turn around and say it's still gimmicky in a casual environment. Pick one.
overall for an alpha it wasnt bad tho it does have problems and visual clutter is really bad.And tbh the only major 🚩 for me is Netease becuase there known for full Unhinged P2W BS and interms of voice acting the only 1 i liked was yuri lowenthal for spiderman from the playstation games.Tho i will say the game does have legs to stand on due to it being a marvel Ip tho i wished they got the original VAs but ofcourse its 2 much money for a company like Netease
Visual clutter is something I notice instantly when watching gameplay. OW1 had it rough at times but 5v5 made the game so readable and following complicated team fights is way more accessible. And frankly I'd never want to go back. Spam is obnoxious but it's a huge part of pressure and controlling space it's even worse when it's so much harder to read.
It'll suffer the same fate as gundam evo if it's not supported appropriately after launch. Foreign game companies dropping an experimental title has almost got a 90% fail rate. Hope this game is a 10%.
14:00 Relax, you're getting 120fps+. Yeah, it's poorly optimized but I wouldn't say it's hOrRIbLe as if its unplayable. People nowadays are so spoiled by all these competitive shooters, they expect 240fps stable no dips from a closed alpha game lol I get it, I also have a similar PC setup but chill, just be grateful you're one of the 70k people who got to try it out.
i feel like this is going to be one of those games that blows up for a few weeks, and then loses most of its player base like multiversus. Its very similar to multiversus where fundamentally I dont think it can compete with other multiplayer games its gameplay and characters are extremely weak compared to every other popular multiplayer game. They are both also reliant on pre-existing ip. Its public alpha numbers are also concerning, it dropped immediately instead of going up, although this could have been something to do with how access was granted. They would need to change a lot for this game not to lose most of its players instantly because people have directly compared it to overwatch, so its directly competing with a game with 8 years of development and a hardcore fanbase. I think flats made a good point when he said that the game's fanbase is formed with overwatch hate, I never hear about this game from anyone without mentioning its better than overwatch or something. Its a very unique situation so maybe this somehow results in a consistent playerbase, but i doubt it.
I’ll always love overwatch I played about 1k hrs but I just don’t know if the joy I get is worth the grief and lack of productivity. Your still the goat tho
I think this is a problem with 3rd person view. Not only do you have a bunch of visual clutter that your own character model adds to that clutter AND blocks your view .
Marvel Rivals isn’t an overwatch killer A. Because it’s pc exclusive and B. Because it is tied to the Marvel brand which is in decline and limits hero designs based on marvel characters. The only Overwatch killer is Overwatch 2
I’m gonna have to try it for myself whenever I can gain access. Really interesting to hear your input as a great OW coach. Also the MvC music was a perfect choice
Rivals isn't going to kill OW2. It will probably kill itself, given my experience with the devs, but we'll see. If they pull something out, maybe it'll become fun.
didnt play the game BUT what if the synergy mechanic thing was applicable to the enemy team as well. Arch nemesises would have dynamics between or whatever, making stuff so fun people wanna choose team comps and enemy matchups. i dont know much marvel (hate the MCU), i didnt play the game (might steal the idea of enemies having dynamics for myself)
Competition is GOOD in the competitive game industry, perhaps many of the problems with Overwach in the last 6-7 years is we've not really had a really competitor in the hero shooter environment... what do you guys think?
Bunga bunga
I completely agree! If there is no challenge to their product then why try being better when they’re the only option in that category of gaming? I’m hoping the full game will be good so that overwatch will need to make some important updates for both games to be enticing.

Idk If competing with overwatch is really a thing at this point the community is so loud and toxic. (As seen with paladins back when that debate was crazy). And all the overwatch players left are the hard core old head. I don't think marvel rivals will be able to poach any of those guys
But alot of people have left overwatch over the years. Marvel rivals might be able to build a new playerbase from all the players that tried and quit/gave up on overwatch.
pvz garden warfare hype needs to return so we can have a real competition
marvel rivals is at that fun stage, without meta and where we havent realised yet what is stupid op, it feels like ow in 2016.
Yep, that's how the finals was and now it has 10% of its original playerbase because the meta and ranked grind are terrible.
there was already a meta established in its short alpha competitiveness. and to my knowledge, it wasnt that unbearable.

Absolutely hated that but it's balanced cause punisher gets shredded if he fails
Hopefully this makes the Overwatch devs feel a well-needes breath in their necks to know they are no longer unchallenged.
damn dude this game aint for you. You dont like Marvel, you dont like 3rd person, you dont like destructible environment. I love all of that.

Your insight about cooldowns has been exactly what i was saying, but about Xdefiant, the new fps ""cod killer". Almost every single ability has a 45-1min cooldown and it feels terrible to play.
i think it works a bit better in xdefiant because its not a abilty focused game like marvel rivals its a fps mainly
@scotttimbrell8632 But I'm right though. Only a well reasoned paragraph can convince me otherwise.
I hate the fact the people aren't realizing that you can't really compare Overwatch to Marvel Rivels .
@@LiteFroze also agreed, rivals feels more like an improvement upon Rogue Company than it does OW, TF2 or Paladins
yeah but the problem with moba abilities is that blizzard can't seem to implement them without moba visuals. massive flashy effects just don't work that well in a first person or over the shoulder third person game. also hero/class/whatever shooters aren't inherently moba-like, overwatch specifically just takes more design cues from mobas than most games. just because valorant has moba abilities doesn't mean that's inherent to the tac shooter genre. i do agree that these sort of abilities are inseparable from overwatch though

I agree with majority of what you say, as always. aside from a couple things
Strange: the close range on E is fine. getting close wasnt that difficult, your dmg pressure gets them low and have to break LoS, then u can walk up. your 2 tap leaves them very low and so that explo is the finisher. Kinda like sigma, hes a ranged tank but wanted to get closer to rock 1 shot combo (when he could do that). Its also a key part of when you ult cuz it does double dmg and will just instantly team wipe off a good ult.
Hulk: yes clunky but gotta give props to the anti flyer potential, something winston struggles with
Loki: how can u not even mention that he has lamp on steroids :(
I think the biggest difference between the two games is that tank characters have a ton of choices, utilities, and options on their own.
You’re coping so hard😭😫
Wow, you are reaching so hard, bro. Actually crazy.
That's what happened to Nick All Star Brawl almost exactly. "The Smash Killer" they called it
@@nahaight1373The only guy coping here is you. If you think that a cheap clone made by the greediest company in the market is gonna last for more than a couple of months you are insane
Agreed, looks way too clunky and soulless
I feel the same, but we all must remenber that it is a alpha still, it's success depend solely on how they address the feedback, otherwise i think it will be a unfun game, faster than overwatch.
valve's upcoming game is a moba. how is that comparable to current state ow2? also, i see the publisher netease slander get thrown around a lot. but naraka bladepoint is still going strong with over 100k online steam right now... and they also have drastically improved dead by daylight mobile. so ive seen decent results from them.
valves game will be a moba - a competitor to something like smite, it won't be as close to overwatch as you might think it is
you can’t kill something that is already dead
Cute, but overwatch isnt dead lol
The game definitely looks fun, and I'm for sure gonna try it out when it releases. However, I don't see myself playing it long term for a couple reasons:
- Movement acceleration: Overwatch 2's movement is instant and feels snappy.
Your point on role lock is laughable
My first thought is when you said as if right now theres no sniper characters my brain is like til hawkeye is added xD
"this character is bad for fps game"
It sounds like 3rd person games are just not for you which is perfectly fine but it seems like you have no grasp of why someone might like 3rd person more than an fps
The old heads will still be playing OW but most people that are not really connecting with the game or stopped playing bc of OWs issues will prob find a good home in rivals, I don’t see the comp scene going crazy in this game and that’s ok with me I’m just looking for a fun game to get me and the boys back on a team work based game
i think the way everyone is a particular type of projectile is weir. very few melee, very few beam, very few hitscan or shotgun
Paladins also does the saving ult charge between rounds thing, not sure if I like it or not.
Had fun playing quick play with you G hope this game stays as fun as it was in alpha. Obviously not perfect nor an OW killer but I genuinely enjoyed it
Also Groot wall heals?
My guess for snipers if there will be any, it's gotta be Hawkeye, Bullseye and Gambit
On Samitos stream, You'd swear his lobby got banished to the shadowrealm of Thor-land payload for 6 hours
Edit: about the voice acting. I think it'd be cool to have a sound settings toggle that changes banter voice lines from sound to comic book word bubbles
dont listen to people who got a sponsoreship from the game, makes sense they have to be positiv
Nothing is going to "kill" Overwatch. That said, this game is meant for me. OW is my favorite game and I absolutely love Marvel. So much that even tho I hate reading I got into the comics recently.
with everyone being OP in marvel rivals yea its balanced already since everyones op and everyones easy to get killed
BALANCED not like ow2
I still love paladins more! I love the item in game shop of paladins to help against counter over swap heroes of overwatch. I hate the long q times on paladins. Imagine an item shop and locked in heroes for overwatch. :)
Great review Dude awesome job! ❤
Also you broke the hell out of the Agreement we all signed by comparing it to a different game. Thanks EULA.
I remember overwatch was called the tf2 killer which it kinda did but now tf2 is full of bots so I'm hoping ow2 doesn't get left behind the same way valve left their game behind
Overwatch is is too much of a cash cow for blizzard to leave it behind
Thing is Tf2 is actually fun to play while OW2 isn't.
ow2 has also got a bot problem recently but I don't think it will die as much as tf2 did
@@dogidogediggidydogedd957And yet the latter has many more players than the first.
@@dogidogediggidydogedd957 I'm sorry to tell you, TF2 died a long time ago, the devs are way too lazy and the only "content" they add is lootboxes. The bot situation is just another nail in the coffin.
I think the personality of Marvel rivals is incredible, that's the first thing that immediately stood out to me
As a whole I really enjoyed it. I hope they have better maps in store for us. The maps felt like knock off overwatch maps. Give us Baxter tower, avengers tower, wakanda, the raft, and the helicarrier.
The issue I had with overwatch was aoe (being killed when they weren’t aiming for me) cc abilities and stuns and there’s so much in this game
I disagree with the “is it fun? Then that’s all that matters”
Overwatch 2 and blizzard have been able to nickel and dime their player base while offering a disrespectful amount of value.
The MVC2 music in the back is such a fire choice for this vid
The crouching while flying - they have a decend keybind you can assign for that!
9:43 Really? You don't know why crouching isn't in a Marvel PvP game? I'll give you one hint... it's something you'd put in hot water
huh?
Coffee, thats gotta be the answer.

I love the art and the characters. I'm always looking for new ways to experience Marvel characters.
There is nothing worse than a character that is not only boring, but weak too. At that point, they are just a waste of dev resources.
The game is on a knife edge where if they buff the wrong things (e.g. black panther, tanks) the game will immediately go to trash. It's fun right now because none of the gimmicky moba abilities are so strong that they ruin the game.
The problem with Marvel for the past 5 or 6 years is not that it is often seen. It is Disney's influence/demands with Marvel.
Maybe it's a good thing Overwatch 2 has some competition. Maybe now they will listen to the players and what WE want in the game.
There was a bug with dr strange portal.
@@nahaight1373 that would cause huge resource issues?
Interested to see how this review will change with the beta and initial release
I think a fundamental mistake is being made here: this is not a first person or third person shooter. This is a straight up MOBA with some shooter elements. Your can’t really think of this In relation to a fps game like overwatch. A much closer comparison would be something like Battenborn or gigantic, or possibly even smite. I’m really not sure how this comparison really can be made when the gameplay systems are so fundamentally different, at least when the focus comes to combat and character design. In a MOBA, certain design mechanics that couldn’t exist in a shooter have their place. So this all seems very off-putting of a comparison to me
This game looks like an absolute mess. And coming from OW that is saying something
I got to say from the beta the game has improved in a very short time
it will be decided which one is better when they add my GOAT big wheel
@@secretlyaslug2325you’d take less visual clutter for a game that is 10x worse💀
I agree with the "ENOUGH. WITH. MARVEL" sentiment. This has singlehandedly been the reason I avoided the game.
It'll suffer the same fate as gundam evo if it's not supported appropriately after launch. Foreign game companies dropping an experimental title has almost got a 90% fail rate. Hope this game is a 10%.
No sniper already instantly makes me confident in these designer’s intelligence
what is the song in the background?
I'll post a list of the songs used in the description sometime today
I can super respect the unbiased nature of his perspective
14:00 Relax, you're getting 120fps+. Yeah, it's poorly optimized but I wouldn't say it's hOrRIbLe as if its unplayable. People nowadays are so spoiled by all these competitive shooters, they expect 240fps stable no dips from a closed alpha game lol
I get it, I also have a similar PC setup but chill, just be grateful you're one of the 70k people who got to try it out.
Unfinished game is unfinished. Surprised Pikachu
i feel like this is going to be one of those games that blows up for a few weeks, and then loses most of its player base like multiversus.
Not only do you have a bunch of visual clutter that your own character model adds to that clutter AND blocks your view .
the punisher's shotty is a tank buster for sure
Marvel Rivals isn’t an overwatch killer A. Because it’s pc exclusive and B. Because it is tied to the Marvel brand which is in decline and limits hero designs based on marvel characters.
The only Overwatch killer is Overwatch 2
Excellent. Thanks for this overview. I’m interested in this game, but it has big shoes to fill.
I’m gonna have to try it for myself whenever I can gain access. Really interesting to hear your input as a great OW coach.
Also the MvC music was a perfect choice
could maybe take a note from garden warfare when it comes to the third person, the model feels a bit too close to the crosshair here
Rivals isn't going to kill OW2. It will probably kill itself, given my experience with the devs, but we'll see. If they pull something out, maybe it'll become fun.
THE MARVEL VS CAPCOM MUSIC??
didnt play the game BUT what if the synergy mechanic thing was applicable to the enemy team as well. Arch nemesises would have dynamics between or whatever, making stuff so fun people wanna choose team comps and enemy matchups. i dont know much marvel (hate the MCU), i didnt play the game (might steal the idea of enemies having dynamics for myself)
The optimization problem has very little to do with the clutter, its because its an alpha and game optimization is one of the last things you finish.
