I always wash all textiles first and add wet to pot - These are the items I use . I can’t grow these in the garden anymore here because I don’t have the room for more than my roses and flowers - Oh roses create a gorgeous (dye dried red rose petals ) is gorgeous!! The veggies I use and what results I get - Red/Pink: Beets Avocado- only stones no skins ( I cut the seeds ( 4-5 ) and simmer in the water 1 hr . ) = Pink Purple: Red Cabbage, Blackberries Orange or Yellow: Onion Skins, Carrots Green: Spinach, Celery Tops, Basil, Carrot tops Adding the bi carb soda gives you all sorts of gorgeous colors Thank you for sharing grapes 🍇
Gi, a "Fruit of the Spirit" journal would be a great way to honor your Mom and use your beautiful grape dyed fabric, trims, and paper! I'm sure she was smiling down on you as you worked with her grapes today! Hugs XoXo
Hi Sweet friend, thank you for your message. It was so much appreciated!! Oh my goodness look what you have done !! I do the same with purple cabbage by adding the bi carb soda !! I do 3 containers so I get a dark purple lavender & blue !! But NEVER EVER thought of grapes 🍇 you are a genius Gi. I did find if I beat set the fabric it never dulls. I used to dye silks using only veggi dyes . Then of course paper happened 💜 Paper I have to soak a while in the house and dry in the shade or I find it fades. I add two times the amount of water in proportion to fruit or vegetable ingredients. Place this on low heat. Bring it to a simmer for about one hour. You should start to notice that the dye from your vegetables has started to transfer into the water. Turn heat off and allow the water to return to room temperature. Pour dye through a strainer and into a larger mixing bowl to remove the solid materials. Then I transferred the fabrics n dye back into the pot.
Thank you Gi for this video. The colors are so pretty. Even that little paper towel was gorgeous. These will be great additions to your mixed media, journals. Blessings 🤗🦋
Gi all that beautiful coloured materials and papers from a little bowl of grapes. Was fascinating to watch how the colours came out differently and adding a bit of bicarbonate and the extra love using your mums grapes, what a lovely memory you have xx
I just love dying paper and fabric. What a beautiful result you got from Mom's grapes. Thank you for sharing and have fun using them.. Excited to see what you do with this stash ❤
At this point, your fabric should be wet. The fibers bond to color best when they are wet. Place your fabric into your pot of room temperature dye. Bring your mixture to a simmer for 15 minutes to 45 minutes and gently move your fabric around to ensure it picks up an even amount of color. Remove the pot from the stove when your fabric has reached a color you are happy with.Add salt and rinse well with cool water. Allow your dyed fabric to slowly cool down on its own in the pot. You can leave the fabric in the pot overnight if you want the color to be stronger. The longer you leave it, the deeper the color. I have found with all of my vegetables that cotton takes the longest to get my desired color. I absolutely will try the grapes and can hardly wait!!

Hi Gi, I’m so glad I watched this fab video. We’ve recently moved house and guess whats in my garden a grape bush. 😊 Its the ugliest thing in my lovely garden and I’ve been playing with idea of taking it out but not now!! This was a really fun video you are so easy to watch and listen to. Thank you so much for doing this on camera. Your Mum would be so happy. Love Bella ❤❤❤
Defiantly keep it Bella, just think of all the lovely fabric and paper dying you can do. And yes, they are not the prettiest of vines. Sounds like you have a beautiful garden. Good luck in your new home. Hugs Gi x
OMGOSH!!! You have me wanting to go buy a bunch of different groceries to Try!!! I love purples and this just makes me happy!!! Thank you Gi for showing us the things you try! Absolutely love this!!!💜💜💜💜💜
Wow! Such a gorgeous colour combo. The blues and greens remind me of ocean colours and the purple could be from a mermaid. I would love to see more colour experiments with food and plants and would love to see the blue paper for sale as digitals. Great video Gi, loved it.
I have a couple of cherries that did not get eaten … hmmm TYFS and TY for the inspiration. I love how excited you were to experiment with the colors. These all turned out beautifully.
Interesting and enjoyable. I have some blueberries I might try those for dying. Nice being in your garden and hearing sounds of nature and life. Thank you Gi.😊❤️🇬🇧
Wonderful video, fun to watch the colors you made, and all from grapes !! Loved it, thank you Gi. I'm sure your Mum is proud of your adventurous spirit , and happy that you are using her grapes to make beautiful fibers(a fun way to honor your Mum 💜
Gi, those are beautiful. I'm sure your mom would be delighted to see how you used the grapes. I think raspberries or blueberries would be pretty also. Thank you for sharing so much with us.
What fun, now I’m itching to do some materials, I have been saving avocado stones for a while now and I have a sack full of yellow onion skins to to play with. Thanks for sharing your experiments with us, they all came out amazing.
What a lovely and fun project - I have some time off next week and I will definitely see what I can dye with - thank you for the inspiration and for sharing 🥰
Love this. I used to hook rugs using wool fabric. I loved dyeing it especially with naturals. I never used salt but would fix my dyes with vinegar or citric acid. I never had fading. But love this with the soda change. I also dye a lot of my papers. I sometimes spray them to give a different look and use stencils also before spraying. If you want a luscious pink try avocado skins and seeds.
Beautiful colors Gi! Grapes are a wonderful pH indicator in the science world..purple grapes are already acidic so when baking soda was added, the juice became alkaline or basic and turned blue...if lemon, lime juice or vinegar was added to the original plain grape juice to make it even more acidic, it would become more red or pink. just in case anyone was interested..lol.. Red cabbage juice will also change a variety of beautiful colors, but the smell is not so pleasant! tfs, take care❤
Natasha from Treasure books has done one video with turmeric and paprika and some other stuff, and the results are absolutely gorgeous. I love love love the colors that you have come up with ❤❤❤

I LOVE this! I play with vegetable/fruit stuffs too and am always amazed at what colors show up...in fact I have some mangy looking carrots hanging around my crisper that I think I'll go have a play with. Thanks for the morning inspiration :o)
What beautiful results! I have dyed fabric & papers using a variety of items. Two of my favs are rose hips and wild raspberries (wild to me anyway). I have tried a variety of spices, fruits, veg, flowers, etc. Some give great results; others do not. As someone else mentioned here, when doing fabric, I always do the heating thing. For paper, I use high gsm watercolor, printmaking or mixed media paper and pre-wet in an alum/water bath. Gives me great results. It isn’t as easy to presoak average artist paper or copy paper and the alum helps to pick up and retain the color, so that is my reason for the quality paper. It still yields beautiful results regardless of the gsm and presoak, though. Science/chemistry is cool!
Wow! So vibrant! I liked all the colors, they are fantastic. And a great idea to use different materials and adding the bicarbonate. Stunning! I need to experiment more with some of the fruit and veggies dying. It’s just so lovely! Hugs 🤗❤️
