    Thank you for creating this episode. Sadly, many in our community don't put much thought into aging and retirement until it's too late. Ignorance is always bliss...until it's not. Hopefully, discussions like this can spur the development of more communities and services geared towards the queer community nationwide.

    I would never live in Florida, it is a nightmare now. Weather, property taxes, property homeowners insurance, traffic, hurricanes … I never even want to visit again.

      I hear ya. There’s a lot of factors that don’t look so good for FL right now. I feel for those that moved there 5-10 years ago thinking it was retirement paradise. Seems like ever since DeSantis took over it’s gone to hell in a hand basket in a number of ways. 😒😣

    I'm enjoying each of your shows. Perhaps, you can look at Cathedral City, California and the Coachella Valley in one of your broadcasts. Well known Palm Springs is located in the valley though now somewhat expensive. The neighboring cities are a bit more reasonable. Cathedral City also has a 100% HRC score with a diverse city council/population. It also boasts a variety of housing options with different price points including senior mobile home communities and nearby world class medical services.

      Funny you being this up. We were in Palm Springs for a Where Do Gays Retire meetup and the host Mark was talking about how he and his husband were looking at new builds there and that Cathedral City had a strong LGBTQ community before Palm Springs became a gay retirement mecca.

    Thank you so much for zooming in on retirement as a driver for relocation! That's why we've been watching your series on Affordable/Gay-Friendly Cities. I know it's a HUGE thing to factor in. But it would be SO helpful if there's any way you can include climate change resiliency into these.

      That's a great suggestion! Thank you for sharing (and watching). After we cover the last state, Alabama, on 02/22/24, we're taking all the data we've collected over the past year and breaking it into other sub-categories, i.e., most affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly cities by region, by city size, in red versus blue state, etc. Overlaying climate change's influence should be possible. Look for that coming soon!

    Been thinking about Oak Run near Ocala Florida. Not a gay community but a nice place.

    • @queermoney
      @queermoney  3 місяці тому

      We don’t know much about Ocala. It doesn’t have an HEC Municipal Equality Index score, so that kinda leads me to believe that it’s not a place with much of an LGBTQ community, but I could be wrong. Maybe ask about it in the Where Do Gays Retire FB group that we talked about on this episode: ua-cam.com/video/5JCHMONyWCE/v-deo.htmlsi=qWm0PBF37H9rocxF

      I live in Florida. Stay away. My trans daughter visits and can't even use a restroom when we go anywhere, beaches, airport etc. Very unfriendly to LGTBQ. People have become very openly aggressive against LGBTQ. If I could sell and move I would.

    The one thing that I noticed the comments missing. And especially for men that are retirement age. Is the power and tenacity that allowed us to thrive and survive to retirement age. What happened to that? Lol perhaps the real answer here. Is to do what we’ve always done. Pick a handful of places and turn them into what we want.we are masters of recreation and gentrification. All we have to do is organize. Like old-school organize. And make it happen. Lol.

      Ya$$$$$! This 💯. What locations would you like to this this happen in? I have a few ideas of my own, but I would love to be a part of something like this while I have the energy to do so now.
