- Another doggy animation. I can't seem to stop animating dogs, they're the best! Anyway, this was started as a live demonstration at The Art Department event run by We Are Playgrounds in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Then I finished it off at home.
That is freaking adorable. The way the look on the dog’s face changes from YAY to o h n o cracked me up.
the gesture is fantastic
I absolutely love the personality and expressions in your animations! This looks so cute 👌
don't stop being goated pls
He wanted to fly so bad
10/10
How much did you finish at the demonstration?
Love how James appears outta nowhere, drops a master work and disappears just as quickly. He's like a wizard or something
Seeing lines brought to life like this has always been magical! So him being a wizard is a perfect description lol
Baxter part of the shadow wizard money gang confirmed?
Fr, he clicks upload, closes the tab, and leaves 😂
He's actually a horse
possibly because of how long it takes to make the animation
he ascended
Indeed
into a jet engine

I actually cannot fathom how amazing you are at your craft
I Amazed tho anyways. I wonder how he could make animation without reffrence or any 3d model,
edit:okay got it now i understand i don't know behind the scene but actually now about behind sence didn't know he using a reffrenc
@@debertsebert7119 Who said he doesn't use a reference ?? Animators ALWAYS use them. James Baxter may be an animation beast, but he's still human
@@debertsebert7119 well someone like james baxter _can_ probably create something very high quality without any reference due to the sheer amount of skill and experience, but using reference is still an essential tool that is almost guaranteed to improve any work drastically so it most likely is still used even by the best of the best.
There’s no reference for this one. It’s just out of my head. I’ve done a fair few quadrupeds in my time, so I can usually do something without reference. I would certainly use it if I needed to though.
@@jamesbaxter1236you're insane king
AI will never replace this joy.
💯
I saw you animate this in Eindhoven in The Art Department a while back, it was so wonderful to see you and your wife create such amazing animation! Really inspiring! :)
Hi Luna!
SAME! I was there with some kids from my school and it was truly an AMAZING experience
@@wojtekworld7981 heyyyyyyyyyyyy
@@oklunaok1153 damn how long has it been? Like a day lol
@@wojtekworld7981 yeah damn feels like ages
I can't even imagine how you're so good at animation
There's this one frame which is such a strong depiction of understanding dog anatomy and motion and perspective that my brain struggles to understand how does it even exist
I was able to watch you make it during The Art Departement in Eindhoven and I just want to say that you are a huge inspiration to me as an aspiring animator
How do I become this good? ಠ_ಠ
You Are an animation god
Jesus the smoothness got me- also as a chihuahua owner this accurate lmao, these demons weigh like nothing-
Amazing as usual
He floats too
This turned out incredibly well! I saw you animate this in Eindhoven and the finished version is even better. Thank you so much for doing this and the time you and your wife took to answer all of our questions, you two are an inspiration!
Ugh god the face animation/expressions are so good, of course along with everything else. Thank you for sharing!! ❤❤
So lively, so expressive, so cute, and yet so vivid!
I would absolutely give everything to be able to attend an event to see you animate something. Your work is so incredibly fascinating to me and you're one of my biggest inspirations for animation.
You're my hero James, and I pray I can be like you one day.
Thats so Amazing your art is full of Life!
hello James Baxter, how do you calculate spacing?
Well, part of it is experience - knowing how fast something will move if you space things a certain distance apart. But I also do a lot of thinking ahead. When I'm doing my key poses, I think very carefully about how many drawings are going to go between them and how those drawings will be spaced. I think about it as I draw the keys and it helps me put those keys in the right place.
@@jamesbaxter1236 omg, thank you!
Why did Pennywise leave the red balloon for the poor dog?
Aside from that, your animation is amazing! Keep up the great work!
the slide on the floor is so smooth oh my gosh
I love it, James. i actually love it. awesome animation.
Masterful animation! My favorite part is when the little dog overshot his target, and his limbs were flailing around trying to regain traction on the slippery ground!
Great job with the expression
talent isnt even the proper word for it. you are a master
I have a chihuahua, can confirm this happens on a regular basis.
“She was a fairy”
Its like watching a Disney film! 😍 (well of course because you were onr of their animators). You sir are TRULY amazing!
I absolutely love your animations! What program(s) do you use to animate?
(And how can you keep the character so consistently drawn every frame? I'm a young animator and I've had that problem for quite a while)
So, this is animated in TvPaint, which is pretty easy to use. As far as maintaining proportions and size there are several things I do. I work on some major poses first (I think the first major pose I did for this is the dog standing and looking up, about 4 seconds in) which I keep constantly visible while I’m animating up to it. That way I can always refer to it for size. Sometimes I’ll copy these reference drawings onto a separate level and turn down the opacity so that they are always lurking back there as a guide.
Then while I’m doing the tie down or final version of the drawings, I will sometimes do a bit of “shift and trace”. I don’t do this on the first run through, I just eyeball the size, but when I’m tying it down, I will sometimes shift and trace (temporarily reposition the drawings to get them closer together) after I have sketched in the rough position. I do this on character’s heads a lot.
If you want to see my approach there are a couple of videos that folks have posted. There’s a pretty good one by Cal State Fullerton’s Pencil Mileage Club where I animate a squirrel.
@@jamesbaxter1236 Ok! Thank you for the tips! How much does TvPaint cost?
EARLY TEAM!!!
This is fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
I really want an animation book by James Baxter, to learn his techniques and philosophies on animation, so I can learn to animate as good as him.
Your doggy animations are the best, you give them so much character
So much emotion in this one short scene!
Also yeah, I've noticed your recent habit of animating dogs. Don't stop! These are great!
So, how long and how many frames and sheets of paper did it take to make this, James?
It's drawn in TvPaint, so no paper. But it's 197 drawings I believe. It took about a week I guess. Not full time, just in my spare time.
@@jamesbaxter1236 Thanks for the response, James! I can't believe you responded! 😮
stopped everything to watch this, thank you jimmy
Tu eres el mejor
I GOT TO SEE YOU ANIMATE A PART OF THIS LIVE, THATS GONNA BE A CORE MEMORY FOREVER
Magnífico, me encanta como se va flotando el perrito >
I love the happy little trot the doggo did
That chaotic wrangling at 0:05, I love it so much!
Are you able to animate even that straight ahead, or does that involve going one body section at a time?
Trying to get better at doing more complex stuff.
Mr. Baxter making really awesome animations as usual
You bring so much life into your animations. Keep it up!
Dang back at it again with that smoothness, James
I love the way he skids to a stop after running LMAO

i love your animations
I want to earn how to animate like this
Oh my god I'm so in love
I saw you animate this at playgrounds. just Amazing to watch!! Thank you for inspiring us all!!
Hand drawn animation has so much more charm than the cg and flash animation that exists today
I hope to be on this level one day

Great to see you post all these gems lately. As an animator myself I find lots of inspiration and enjoyment in studying them. On that note I was wondering in the end when the doggo is lifted up by the red balloon I notice you have it all on 1s and was wondering why this part. I know about faster actions on 1s but in this case it's a slower more even type movement so just curious. It looks great of course. I know it's also an artistic choice at times what to put on 1s and the feeling and texture alternating gives. One more question and if you don't have the time to answer I perfectly understand. Did you animate the bugs in the opening of rescuers down under by any chance? Looking at this sequence with the lady bug taking off in the end and knowing your work it seemed like it could be you. I remember really liking this part also the different walks on the bugs in the beginning.
I could have left it on twos, you’re absolutely right. And your also right that in classic Disney hand drawn style it’s the faster stuff that gets to be on ones. But sometimes if a slow movement is very evenly timed like this, it can benefit from being on ones so it doesn’t strobe. It’s why camera moves are nearly always on ones, because they strobe easily. Even in Spiderverse which has fast action on twos and even threes (which I love!) they usually have the camera on ones.
Also, yes, I did the bugs. Good eye!

hi james baxter
The way his paws go limp is exactly how my dog acts when you lift him off the ground by his toy. Except he’s also growling angrily and spreading spit everywhere😂
wow....just amazing!
I love how expressive he is
