- The Cathedral is one of Portugal's top dive sites. Situated in Sagres where the Atlantic meets the Med, its a Swiss cheese of marine life. A Spiritual cave for local fishermen, it has become very well know in the area. The local fishermen used to believe that the Staints allowed sand to fall from the stalactites in order for the Stalagmites to grow up. There are over 250 species of sponges in the Cathedral and secret passageways.
A stalactite is an icicle-shaped formation that hangs from the ceiling of a cave and is produced by precipitation of minerals from water dripping through the cave ceiling. Most stalactites have pointed tips. A stalagmite is an upward-growing mound of mineral deposits that have precipitated from water dripping onto the floor of a cave. Most stalagmites have rounded or flattened tips.
