To those who chose to be so critical...for God's sakes these are kids....about 13-15. The are just learning. At a minimum. They are doing something productive which is more than likely more than anything the bashers are doing.
Anyone who thinks they can critise other performances clearly doesnt produce their own videos.. what you can 'play' and what you can make a video of can be 2 very different things, so just show a bit of kindness and consideration in your comments of young musicians..
It's nice to see that someone else knows who Paul Desmond is. Did you know that Desmond actually played Alto, Tenor and Bari? Most people don't know Dave Brubeck was a Pianist let alone didn't write this song. Anyway this group of 3 Clarinets and 1 Alto Saxophone actually calls themself a Clarinet/Saxophone quartet, which is accurate. I personally think it would sound better with two altos, a tenor and a baritone sax. To each his own, though. These kids didn't OK for an arranged peice.
come on, give em a break. they are all young and still learning. yah, most of what what said below is true. so what, they tried and hopefully are still growing in their love for music.
Give these kids a break already. All we musicians had start somewhere. For me it was the old "squeezebox" for a while, then self-taught piano Ended up playing 6 nights a week in Iceland with a 5-piece band, played for one of our Vice=presidents etc bla bla bla. I was nervous too. The kids did a great job, albeit automatically. Well done guys.
... and he gave all the royalties to the International Red Cross. It took his lawyer five years or so after his death to get them to make a public anouncement - so much for charity - about as much as in the Ted Johnson critique above!
Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Let us be thankful that these kids even remembered who the Dave Quartet were.......and the great song that 'take five' will always be.
Expensive instruments, but still underaverage tone.. something's not right...hate those people, who buy 3000+ bucks clarinet, but play so badly, that they can't use even quarter of their instrument's potential..

@Udaykymset No. This piece was arranged for a clar or sax quartet and the author didn't putted in any "free space" for improvisation or solo. It's just the main theme which pass from one to another. Personally I miss the solos too but we played it as written.
Because tuning is mostly useless at this stage of their careers. They play differently when they tune vice when they play a piece of music. That's why they should tune to a song or scales together vice playing 1 note to tune. They should learn to listen as they play and adjust. Here, I don't think she's flat, more it's the arrangement of the song. My opinion.
@Carl0Tentacules Why didn't you improvise after certain parts such as bridges? It is not like you HAVE to do what the music says o-o. If there are no solo sections in the written score make up your own?
I’m ok with it. This is not a top shelf concert performance. It’s music students performing a jazz classic. I’m all for it! I like seeing the setup, as if I were there. They deserve encouragement, not criticism.
fantastic -which is the real interest of this piece the accompaniment or the tune ? Neither to me -one makes the other-equal -dave b bringing 2 of his dads ranch horses in for water- you can hear a gentle trot of out of step horses hooves on the ranch and the muse -the gentle commenting tune fitting it -I love the cadences between the mid 8 and head
As a young student I learned sax and had to do the Take Five solo part at a schools festival. I struggled a lot with this strange but wonderful piece of music. I am pretty sure it sounded terrible, but I loved it and put a lot of soul in it. I am sure these young students feel the same. So do not blame them for not beeing professionnels. They give their best and actually, it is pretty good.
@wildpeter36 First off...you are correct that Paul Desmond wrote it; however, it was first recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet and was one of their most popular pieces. Second, it is clearly indicated as a clarinet/saxophone quartet, which if you notice, has 3 clarinets and 1 alto-saxophone. A very good piece for this young group of musicians. Three years later now and hopefully each of you is continuing to excel.
@thisistherealalec i hope not... i love my bari and want to to stay a bari. bass clarinets are skinny like his, but a bari sax are usually laquered and shiny like other saxes.
Dee Jay Take 5 was composed by Dave Brubeck. Paul Desmond was the sax player who contributed a sax solo. The sax solo itself was, to a large extent, composed by Mr. Brubeck.
Todor Kolev Wikipedia is your friend, and will tell you in the first sentence of the Take Five page that Desmond wrote the song. Its pretty well known in jazz circles that Brubeck and Desmond considered each other musical equals and they both wrote for the quartet. And that solo is obviously all Paul, he'd been playing like that before he even met Dave.
omg, i am an advanced woodwind instrumentalist in my school's wind ensemble, and this blew my clarinet choir/quartet out of the water, we dont allow sax in it, but that will soon change
Pretty nice arrangement. The bass clarinet really gives it some ... bass.
To those who chose to be so critical...for God's sakes these are kids....about 13-15. The are just learning. At a minimum. They are doing something productive which is more than likely more than anything the bashers are doing.
First of all, they are 16-17, secondky i am 15 and i play 5 times better than them
Well said

Un GRAND BRAVO !!! Merci pour ce partage tellement agréable.

So good!!!!😊
Full marks for trying, but I thought they sounded nervous.
Grace Gorman that is good criticism.
I've always wanted to just... hold a bass clarinet.
(I play a B flat clarinet)
Me too, it's one of my dreams :) Not just hold it, but blown in it too !
Lovely, but please note that Take Five was written by Paul Desmond, not Dave Brubeck.
Michael Ellis You're stupid ? He says it in the video !
... and he gave all the royalties to the International Red Cross. It took his lawyer five years or so after his death to get them to make a public anouncement - so much for charity - about as much as in the Ted Johnson critique above!

Dayum that bass player was goin ham
very nice!
This song will take you through out you life.
Dave told that to me.
Standing ovation.
Clarinets?
What reeds?
Nice performance... there's certainly room for improvement, but given the apparent ages of the performers it was very well performed.
Merci!
No soul. THIS IS FUCKING JAZZ. YOU DON'T FEEL IT. :(
the clarinet girls is really cute...and i enjoyed listening so yeah good work ( the listening part )
Expensive instruments, but still underaverage tone.. something's not right...hate those people, who buy 3000+ bucks clarinet, but play so badly, that they can't use even quarter of their instrument's potential..
Bravo !!!
bravi complimenti.

Who is playing bass clarinet? He looks like exactly to me...
@Udaykymset No. This piece was arranged for a clar or sax quartet and the author didn't putted in any "free space" for improvisation or solo. It's just the main theme which pass from one to another.

L'académie de Couillet ! Vous l'avez fait exprès, les Belges ? :)
This is really cool, keep up the good work guys!!!
Always have to be somebody coughing in the background.
I like it! Very cool Take Five variation! Congratulations à tous!!!
Bonjour a vous tous , belle interpretation bravo
bass guy is very good
the other one has a tosca!!!!
and the girl a plastic barrel...interisting^^
anyway, great!
They spend a third of the presentation talking and tuning up! That should NOT be part of the tape! Amateurish!
Very nice arrangement and performance of this iconic masterpiece. Thanks for sharing.
Gonna love tha bass clarinet!!!
complete lack of soul!!these is cool jazz...and they aren't showing any emotion..tsktsktsk.
Do y’all think I can play my bari saxophone instead of a bass clarinet?
Because tuning is mostly useless at this stage of their careers. They play differently when they tune vice when they play a piece of music. THis is BEAUTIFUL!
Do you want me to transcribe it?
@Carl0Tentacules Why didn't you improvise after certain parts such as bridges? It is not like you HAVE to do what the music says o-o. If there are no solo sections in the written score make up your own?
you guys r so good
0.20 second, who is she and she playing in the actuallity?
They can read swing but they can't understand it.
Considering how young they all are, and the fact this is in 5/4 time (which a lot of conventional musos find almost impossible) this is pretty good!
@thisistherealalec
no it was a bass clarinet
This is really cool! where did you get the sheet music for this?
you should credit Paul Desmond as the composer
Video starts at 0:53.
Not to be rude, but I thought it seemed pretty obvious that I meant that? :P But thank you :)
Take Five is not Dave Brubeck, it is Paul Desmond song
Guys they’re French they probably aren’t used to Brubeck recordings give them a break
Merci !
Superb C/S blending for Take 5!
Why does this start with noise? Start with the music and delete this poorly edited version.

It is not a sax quartet for your information Carl10tentacules its a quartet of two clarinets, one alto sax, and a bass clarinet
They did good. They sounded a bit shy and they could’ve added a little more second clarinet. Good tone and very in tune.
Glad I surfed on to you guys.....enjoyed it......so different, really cool, great job!
why the hell is he playing on a buffet toska, that is ludicrous at that standard of playing!
but for children they are REALLY GOOD!
disasterous
Great start. Fast forward to 2025 and You wilol like even better. Great talent!
Absolutely no refinement in their tone and style whatsoever. Too bad.
Love Zoe! She´s gorgeous!
WTF is that sax on the right?
Great job kids. It sounds beautiful. You all play beautifully.
Why not a ALTO CLARINET instead of the ( in this case INTRUSIVE alto sax ) ?? Come on!!
romisaxy idiot

Its not
and where the hell is the conductor?!?

Sounds good. The clarinette girl is really beatiful
Well done!
Debb Saxx in Florida
Where are the solo's? This is a jazz theme! you have to make happen something...catatrofe!
Jean-Claude they are like 13-15 dude I'm that age do you have any clue what it's like to do solos?
Like come on it takes YEARS and it's difficult
Pas d'improvisation... quel dommage ;)
@thisistherealalec i hope not... i love my bari and want to to stay a bari. bass clarinets are skinny like his, but a bari sax are usually laquered and shiny like other saxes.
If you're going to film it, take the front seat.
Take 5 composed by Paul Desmond not Dave Brubeck.

A funky cool ensemble.. :-)

I don’t understand the hate? I thought this sounded hella good like wow
filme de actine americane traduse in limba romana
This clarinet was so bad
great!
Great......many greetings from OK-Dreamband. CD "Clarinet-Dreams" is available for download (iTunes, amazon).
this song doesn't work on clarinet!
Paul Desmond composed "Take Five".
not fast enough, needs more style.
Name of the gyl. Gil
was the guy playing a bari sax?
At my jazz band this was a duet with the drummer and pianist.
Interesting(;
awesome well done bravo
the author of this sheet forgot the real meaning of music by forgotthing the solo part
