  • A Jeep at BlackPoint Marina Slid to its demise Labor Day weekend in Miami,Florida
It looks like the Clutch failed and once the jeep slid low enough at the boat ramp the driver lost total control. Many people ran to the ramp to help the family that was about to leave the ramp. As the jeep was going in the wife of the driver jumped on the boat and tried to start it. It was to late the boat trailer turned and the jeep went fully under.

People its not cause of weight. It's because either his clutch went out or he didn't disengage his clutch far enough cause it to over rev and go backwards. Wheells didn't even spin while the engine over revved so I'm right. Than to make matters worse he didn't even use his common sense and immediately apply the brakes while going backwards, and than to really make it wise is he exits the damn car with zero traction!!

Did anyone see the competitor's video? The narrator who does voice over pretending to be there was pretending to talk to guys who were talking to Alfred as they passed by. Feel so sorry for the family. You could see the little girl was frightened and scared as to what was happening. There were three gentlemen that helped out, one gentlemen just gave them a rope and looks to have left before the full recovery, one gentlemen got his own Ram truck to pull them out, one gentlemen dived in and assisted the Jeep owner by attaching the rope to the Jeep’s tow hook. None of those three gentlemen at any time broke out there cell phone and started to record.

I'm 73 been all over the west coast, been around salt water and freshwater fishing since I was a kid. Back in the late 50's I remember boat ramps getting a regular cleaning with wide push brooms. The brooms had metal brushes and the workers wore rubber wet suits and strange looking shoes. The cleaning was at low tide. The slime that was scrubbed off turned the water green, plus the ramps were ribbed more than they are today. Anyone else remember the boat ramp cleaners?

@@Bubbles99718 If you ever have this happen take the vehicle straight to a self serve carwash and put the thing on tire/wheel cleaner and spray it on everything. And I mean in every crack and hole you can get it in, including in the bell housing/clutch and then let it sit for a couple of minutes and then rinse it out. It will not save any of the electronics the water got into, but it will save the engine and all underneath it including the brakes and hubs and stuff from rusting. I've fished saltwater a lot, and my rear diff', brakes, hubs would always rust, so I got a new truck and boat and took them to the carwash as soon as I got done fishing and sprayed all that down with wheel cleaner, and after two years and fishing saltwater more times than I count there was nothing rusting.

Is considered a sign of weakness in Florida to engage the four-wheel drive while pulling out your boat or are these just a bunch of software engineers that bought macho-looking toys that they have no idea how to operate? 1. Lock in the 4X4. 2. bring a little bag of sand/gravel and get some grit on that slick stuff (I carry one over each fender well all winter long). 3. have someone with that boat in gear giving you a little push, push! 4. Do most of your untethering and loading before you tie up a ramp space. 5 Leave the main hook attached on steep ramps until your boat contacts the water. 6. once you attach and reel the boat up on the trailer, pull it out and do all your other crap in the staging area. Or, if you want to continue to do it your way, Alfred will be recording and we'll be watching. Your dime.

Many vehicles still on the road are part time 4wd, which means they must be put in 4wd by the user either with a lever, button, or dial. Otherwise it's in only 2wd. Newer full time 4wd and awd systems (they are very different and should not ne used interchangeably) do not require that user input they just are in 4wd all the time or automatically engage the other axle as the one slips in the case of most awd systems.

    • @2009dudeman

I think it's a combination of not having 4wd for many down south, and not paying attention or being too dumb to pay attention to ramp conditions. I launch and recover in 2wd all the time here in Michigan, but i'm smart enough to have good tires, and not back my tires into the water (your trailer should be setup that most ramps do not require you to get your tires wet to launch the boat). I also give a visual inspection of the ramp before I back down and lock in my hubs if I think I might need 4wd.

Best slip fix Ever! Floridians may scoff at this idea but it works. To slay those steep slippery ramps use 'plastic' snow chains. If the vehicle is front wheel drive, one tire should be enough. I'd do both if rear wheel. There's a trifecta of issues. The tongue weight of the boats vs rear weight of the vehicle with the pitch of the ramp. The high temps bolster the algae bloom. Unfortunately low tide risks too much vehicle in the water for some. A new small business Alfred! If a vehicle is in jeopardy they could sell them on the spot and put them on right there on the ramp. Unlike metal chains they won't damage the ramp, less stress on tires and they won't rust.

    1. Avoid launching at low tide if possible
    2. If you have 4WD, lock it in 4WD
    3. Unhook the bow safety chain and strap before you begin to back in the water
    Minor items
    4. Don't use an undersize tow vehicle for the size of the boat

I always wondered how it happens and prepare for no traction coming out. but I figured if I went backwards and the weight of the boat unloaded from trailer by floating I would not go to far back. but in my mind I know. you cannot rely on the emergency brake or Park. your loosing front brakes the moment you let go of that pedal and with the rear submerged you will start to float the rear further reducing rear brakes.
