      I have a back gaurding and wants to keep few hens maximum 4. I just want to know if there is any Law around keeping chickens in your back guarding in the UK. Do you have to make space for them to run around as well.

    I keep rescued ex caged birds and have done for many years. I would highly recommend if anyone is considering getting hens to do this as it’s so rewarding to give these birds that have had a miserable life a taste of freedom and a good supply of Fresh eggs is a bonus

    Brilliant video about chicken keeping. Love the tip on wood ash as a dust bath. We had a log burner installed last year and it never occurred to me to use wood ash with the chickens. I will from now on!

    Enjoyed this video, I have 15 white leghorn chickens obtained from a barn colony at a farm that was closing, all the chickens were destined for slaughter , These chickens are doing really well , in fact, they have continued to lay eggs all through the winter. You are right, they are flighty and great escape artists.

    Shukhria! I'm about to build a chicken run and I was going to cover the entire run. After watching your video, I realise that I would have made a mistake. Like yourself, I will cover a part of it and also put wood chippings.

    A simplified guide to keeping chickens at home in a backyard setting. For many of us trying to homestead in limited space keeping chickens is our introduction to keeping livestock, they form a valuable part of any eco system and can be used to control pests, produce fertiliser as well as the added benefit of producing eggs.

    We got czech dominants, not through choice really it's just what the local breader has because they are bred for colder climates and lay over 250 eggs a year but they have several variations in colour. They've laid well even in the cold and short days so we're pleased.

    Assalamualikum very nice video, can you share some information about the size of your garden, is it a terrace house garden, how do you deal with neighbours or the council even? What about the smell from the chicken dosen't this affect the neighbours or you get complaints from council etc? Jazakullah khair

    Just a quick add on, we're all getting letters regarding registering our chickens etc as we are in a avian flu zone. It's not compulsory to register small flocks under 50 but they are all meant to be shut in and netted to avoid contact with wild bird population. My hens are furious as they are usually out shredding my garden when the sun shines.

    I had a legbar aracuna cross that used to lay every day like a leg bar and green eggs like an aracuna i raised from an egg. She was very mild mannered, not like a leg bar at all. Unfortunately foxes came and picked her head off.

    Thanks so much. I’m really interested in have just 2-3 little ones but I have dogs and my mum is worried about the noise the birds will make as well.
    She’s worried people will complain. I would love to have them for the eggs . But also I want to tame/look after them up close if I can have some. I’d be interested in building them somewhere that others know they are there as would have to use front garden as no room out back really. And I’d like to make it that there noise didn’t spread to others. But it’s all a dream if I can’t have them in a council property. Do you know anything about what I’ve said? Any answers would be great.

    • @foxfootfemale
      @foxfootfemale Рік тому +1

      I first had Pekin bantams. They don't lay in the winter,. As they are smaller you need a smaller coop and space in general and there is less poo.
      They can be easily tamed, and they aren't noisy, even big hens aren't that noisy tbh. They are quiet during the hours of darkness snyway

      @@foxfootfemale I’m not worried about the neighbour nearest me as we live like one family in 2 houses but it’s people along the road there is one lady who is a right old bat lol sorry I have autism so I say it how I see it. Yea if she thinks anything is wrong in her opinion she will say to others and basically spreads gossip as I see it. So I don’t want to cause issues.
      Also we in council housing, am I allowed birds lol I expect not as it’s a way of bettering myself and they want you under their control!!!

    • @foxfootfemale
      @foxfootfemale Рік тому +1

      Some people will find anything to complain about won't they. I've no idea if you're allowed to keep them at your house, someone will k iw
      She will no doubt complain about smell, rats, efc, well you keep them cleaned out and give an allotment holder the muck. That's one thing less. You'll need to keep fixes and stray dogs out, and making it fox proof can help with rat proofind, and make sure that there is no food left out at night. There will already be rats about btw
      It would be a shame to get all set up and then have hassle from her. If you have no cock there will be no cockadoodling, the happy clucking offends no one, they do sing when they lay eggs and if there is a predator, a cat or dog etc they do sound alarm calls
      Some areas have Com. Unity chickens where care and eggs are shared
      Hens over the wall outside the dentist made trips there less fright ING when I was little, they can be so calming

      @@foxfootfemale yea she was moaning in the summer coz the dogs were outside with me most of the day but they were barking when people went up the street…. Well we are working on 2 that haven’t been socialised so that’s to be expected they see a threat or hear it and bark.
      She said to someone as my mum was getting out the car that the dogs should be put down for making so much noise, mum said to her that it’s a shame we don’t put people down for making too much noise that isn’t appreciated by others!!!! Think she upset my mum, who takes everything on her back till she shapes and she said the wrong thing , mum went nuts when she came into mine…
      It’s very promising what you are saying…. I must look into it more definitely if eggs are gonna get even harder to get as mum would be pleased at free eggs when atm they expensive and going up like everything.

    Alot of schools during the summer keep and hatch chick's as part of their biology lessons. My relative does this and keep the chick's over the summer. The school doesn't keep the birds and I'm unsure what happens to them. You could probably get some birds for free easily by making enquiries with local secondary schools

      @@cherylrichardson4634 7 years ago we had lots of roosters and wasn't aware of the crowing law. Police came, and told us to take them to slaughter house. We ended up 'knocking them out' and eating them by ourselves. It was so sad. Hope these laws somehow disappear later when more and more people become self-sufficient and require roosters for reproduction
