This drone thing is being overblown (he didn't kill anyone) and not the worst sports scandal in Canadian history. I'd argue Ben Johnson getting stripped of the Gold Medals in the Olympics was MUCH worst. Wheeldon Jr. or Smyrniotis from the CPL would probably be top candidates IMO. Hoping Herdman the best of luck in the future. He did a lot for the game in the country.
He cheated and coerced his staff to cheat. He also ran away from the investigation which speaks volumes. His legacy is stained. I feel sorry for the players and the fans.
These comments lauding him here and elsewhere-great…he has done good things for the game. He has also apparently done some shady things and I think worst of all and what overshadows the actual drone stuff is the fact that he has let others take the fall, has hidden behind purposefully evasive answers and has not been able to step up to what he has been involved in and THEN move on. He has affected peoples lives and thinks he can just walk away by resigning and ‘start over’. I hope not.
Genuine question what do you mean by letting others take the fall? I thought it was pretty concentrated to him, Bev, and the members of staff who physically did it.
Obviously I don’t have any inside knowledge and have gathered my take from watching the various Canadian journalists and pundits on UA-cam. It has not been reported once that he has taken any direct responsibility for the drones being instituted into the men’s/women’s program. He has allowed three people (perhaps more?) to lose their jobs and reputations by their involvement in continuing what he instituted and never said a word to help absolve them as he should/could have. He has hidden behind lawyers and the ability to evade the Canadian soccer federation that has been publicly toothless in holding him accountable or even holding him to an interview. He has thus been able to resign without admitting guilt and avoiding direct stain but hopefully there are enough decent people in general and those in decision making roles that will hold him accountable in future employment roles. You make a mistake and you own up. Then you move on. By being remorseful and taking action to correct yourself and apologizing to those you’ve harmed. Not by continuing to be a coward.
I’ll add that in both his case and Bevs case, the other harmed parties are all the players under them now under suspicion, Jesse Marsch who has to deal with the fallout, the next women’s coach who has to deal with the same and the Canadian public.
Herdman has done so much for footy in Canada, I hate to see him go out like this. I hope for him he can find a good landing spot. any womans international job would be a great hire for that nation.
