Bay of Fundy's Radical Tide Swings

  • Tides effect the entire globe. Meanwhile, in Canada's Nova Scotia the Bay of Fundy serves up tidal swings that draw tourists from around the globe. Four times a day tides expose the ocean's true power, shifting water up to 54 feet at tide change.
    Some of the largest tidal swings are seen here in Parrsboro, a small coastal town where boats come in on high tide and rest on the ocean floor during low tide. It's a phenomenon that impresses no matter how many times you see it.

    I've always wondered about the Bay of Fundy. I've lived at the other side of the planet with the second highest tidal range- the River Severn and the Bristol Channel. Piers such as Ilfracombe and further upstream, Clevedon, have three decks, and the tidal range is easily over 40 feet.
    Morecambe Bay, on the edge of The Lake District, doesn't have anywhere near the same range, but it is a huge bay with that completely dries out and fills with an incoming tide faster than a man can run. There are also constantly changing quicksands.

    Too bad you didn't show high tide. I am the owner of the little blue sailboat near the first of the video. Tides are nice but I only have about a two hour "window " of time to sail., then only every other week as the tides are about an hour later each day . So if it is high at 2pm today , it will be low at 2pm same day next week.

    Very interesting, apparently the largest tidal range in the world, 50 feet (15 meters); huge. Apparently a resonance effect where by the natural period of the bay determined by its geometry imparts this to the constrained water mass within & goes towards matching the lunar semi diurnal tidal forcing period of 12.4 hours.

    • @demonhalo67
      @demonhalo67 Рік тому

      Bristol Channel in UK can get extremely high tidal swings too, although on average about 2-3 meters less than the bay of Fundy. It is still an extremely dangerous stretch of water with many sandbanks and inter-tidal islands along the way. I am not sure but I believe Avonmouth can reach up to 32 feet on very high tides. Which would place it on any top 10 high tide list but well short of most locations on the Bay Of Fundy.

    • @deanjericevic8912
      @deanjericevic8912 Рік тому

      @@demonhalo67 It may also be a local resonance effect there too? Check to see if any oceanographic studies have been done there.

    I have been there a couple of times. Very impressive! You see large lobster boats sitting on the ground, with steel keel beams and steel shrouds around the prop. 40 foot tides and the largest lobsters I have ever seen. Beautiful country.

    • @Dargonkin527
      @Dargonkin527 3 роки тому +1

      the "steel shrouds" around the prop are called "baskets" and they are to help keep the prop free from the lines that run down to the lobster traps from the surface of the water when they are in use. You need to remember that little prop is your only means of moving that giant boat if it gets fouled you are heading to the rocks mother nature is cruel but fair :)

    • @jamesrobinson5672
      @jamesrobinson5672 3 роки тому

      @@Dargonkin527 thanks for that explanation. Not knowing very much about boats, I assumed the baskets were too protect the props from ground contact at low tide?
      Anyway, it's a really beautiful place.
      I have spent a lot of time in Halifax, and I had to see the bay of fundy,
      Glad I did.

    • @Dargonkin527
      @Dargonkin527 3 роки тому

      @@jamesrobinson5672 no not for that, if you look closer you will see that the keel of the boat extends out further then the prop both to protect the prop from that issue when grounding and also to provide a solid connection point for the rudder which is how you steer the boat when its under power. Those props are actually engineered to exact specs as it will give a very rough ride if it ever gets out of alignment or suffers damage from any number of causes...Hmm, It seems my fishing village upbringing has never left me after all :)

    • @bocabec6744
      @bocabec6744 Рік тому

      @@Dargonkin527 You ALWAYS need to have a back-up plan. I suggest diving gear, a powerful headlamp, wrist lamp and a good knife. Keep tethered to your boat. Go down, cut the line free and get back to work.

    • @Dargonkin527
      @Dargonkin527 Рік тому

      Nope if you look closely enough you will see the end of the props are a bit above the ground(by design) and could actually be turning while grounded if so needed to be, for repairs/adjustments etc.

    Nice vid lads. Good scenery too. This vid has cleared some things up for me too. Where I live the tidal range is about 3-4 metres. When I had previously saw pics only of the dock it reminded me of where I live and I thought to myself that tidal range is nowhere as big as I expected it looks similar to home. What I now realise after seeing this vid is that low water is well below the base of the dock!

    Good video man. The Bay of Fundy is famous for anyone who knows anything about tides and it's fascinating to actually see it with the avuncular style to boot. I believe it's local geography causing a harmonic resonance that causes these huge tidal ranges , the springs must be good. Excellent.

      exactly is is the "funnel" shape of the bay that makes these tides as high as they are, when that land bridge between NB and NS eventually gets worn through by these tides then all these tides will disappear......
