Cyanotype Inspired Art: Watercolor and Stencil Fusion on Khadi Paper

- In this art video, I dive into the world of mixed media, exploring the captivating allure of cyanotype aesthetics. Using cotton Khadi paper as my canvas, I demonstrate how to achieve stunning effects reminiscent of cyanotypes. Beginning with a stencil from Stencil Girl, I apply water and sprinkle watercolor powders in shades of blue and turquoise, enhancing the depth and vibrancy of the piece. Adding texture with salt, I let the artwork dry before meticulously detailing leaf vine stencil areas with Pitt Pastel pencils. Join me on this creative journey as we blend techniques to create a masterpiece inspired by the timeless beauty of cyanotypes.

That turned out ahhhmazing! I just bought a couple of inexpensive stencils yesterday at Michaels in anticipation of my art journal supplies arriving.....I think I'll give one of those stencils a whirl, modifying the supplies a little bit and see what I can come up with. Denise,I am soo going to try this,I love cynotypes too and use to make them a lot especially on fabric. I do have a large set of watercoloir powders which I have never actually used. The stencil girl sttancil was the perfect design for this,and asssing the salt really gace more of the cynotype effect,I think the Khadi paper also adds to tghis effect o because of it's texture. The finished pieces also looked a little like delft tiles as well. I think when I try this I'm definitly add some gold,this was the perfect mixed media project.(matt) P.s I wonder if texture paste through the stencil would work for thid as well...

Cool! Do you think you could spray some light fixative on those powdered watercolors before working on to of them? Would that even work? I think constantly reactivating them might drive me crazy!
You could try! It is just watercolor like other watercolors when you add water and move those powders around 😊

I was waiting for you to just turn the stencil over and blot it on the paper. Since it had so much "stuff" on it, it would serve like a rubber stamp, wouldn't it? Dunno, could make a major mess, too. (Another turd?) Well, we can always cut it up.

One question. If you spray a fixative on top will it reactivate the watercolors or is it OK to seal it with the fixative? Thanks😊
You could seal it. I’ve never had an issue with the spray fixative. I did not spray this piece. 😊

What a beautiful piece! 😍But I will have to try with other colors. I threw my color pigment powders away. I could not handle them. I hade them all over me, my desk, my floor and everywhere else.🤣 The fern leaf, is that a stencil or an actual leaf??
They are messy for sure! 😁 (the fern on the cyanotype is a real fern. I got a fern at the garden shop and plucked some off to do my cyanotype exposures.)
