  • Domonstrates how to make an arrowhead with abo tools. Several flakes are removed from a chunck of raw Pedernales flint. One flake is selected and shaping begins using a small hammerstone. The small biface is then shaped, thinned and finished using a small antler pressure flaker. This is a 2 part series.

    You have taught me a lot about flintknapping. When i was a the county fair doing whip cracking shows i didn't know i was wearing a clovis around my neck. I chose to make a dance blade a couple of months ago but i made it out of mahogany obsidian. I really thank you for all you have taught me about flintknapping.

    @pup9et The pressure flaker is a replica of one found in a cave. The handle is wood and the tip is a section of deer antler split from the side of the antler and bound onto the wood handle.

    @28blay I am glad to see more knappers trying the abo approach, theses tools are every bit as effective as modern tools, enjoy....jim

    not just effective but if you ask me if you want to make a piece of art made quite awhile ago its even better to do it exactly how it was once made.

    the good thing about flint knapping is that if the peices that dont work out for what your crafting them into they can always be used for flint and steel and ive also used flint blades on my fero rod before and it works perfect

    I do wear reading glasses so they provide protection. I have had flakes/chips get into my eyes a few times. It is best to not rub the eyes when this happens, shaking the head can help or use a tissue to dab it out. Ishi was noted to hit his head with his hand when this happened to remove flakes...

    @MontanaBarNone I have several of these flakers now. Whitetail deer antler seems best. I have one with sambar stag horn and it is harder stuff than the whitetail. I like the sambar for notching and narrower flaking. The whitetail seems to grab better when removing the longer side flakes. ShinBone5000 has a video on making one titled "Making a Primitive Antler & Bone Pressure Flaker Pt 1". I cheated and used nylon to secure the antler to the wood handle. ....thanks....jim

    That's a big white tail billet! The main difference is that Moose billets are usually heavier than white tail billets (0.5 lbs to around 1.5 lbs for Moose). The main reason modern knappers like Moose are they are fairly dense and straight and heavy. White tail is usually curved and much lighter. A curved billet is swung with one face hitting the platform. Not necessarily a problem though as it is easy to get used to swinging. White tail is denser than Moose, a big plus in my opinion....

    The rest of my abo tools arrived the other day. I want to go do some knapping pretty bad but my carpal tunnel acting up pretty bad from working on a tiki I have been carving so I am stuck watchin videos for now. When my carpal tunnel acts up it could take anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks to calm down. Cant wait to do some knapping

    I'm fascinated by your pressure flaker. Have you addressed the design and manufacture of it in a different vid?

    • @paleomanjim
      @paleomanjim  5 років тому +1

      No, but very easy to make, just spit the base of an antler into sections and use tie a section to a larger wood handle. The one in this video is a copy of one that was found in a great basin cave archeological dig, so the old boys definitely used these type pressure flakers....

      Is there any central, or particularly prominent, authority or library of such archaeological finds? One that you'd recommend?

    On yer pressure flaker: is it sambar stag? how long is the wood backing it is lashed to? Just cotton cord? Sure would like a short how-to on making one......i'm sure others would be interested in it too. Thank you!

    Have you made a videoshowing how to make pressure flakers? If you have, What is the title of the video? Thank you. I love watching your videos and I'm learning a lot. : )

    Remind me why you sometimes rub your percussion stone on the edge, kind of smoothing it out.

    • @paleomanjim
      @paleomanjim  8 років тому

      Rubbing the percussor on the edge strengthens it so that it does not collapse on the next percussion strike.

    Hey jim. I have a massive white tail billet I made ( 9-10" long 3" round and 3 lbs ) iwas wondering what is the difference between a white tail billet that size and elk or moose? Other than the animal it comes from are the different hardness or something like that

    Yes, the purpose of the up flake is that it removes a very small flake adjacent to the long flake just removed. That small flake is on the opposite face of the long flake and the small crater it creates provides a place for the tip of the pressure flaker to seat against for the next long flake.Hope that makes sense....jim

    occasionally it seems like you are pushing in and away from the bi-face is that when you are changing the edges side or am I just imagining it?

    Do you wear glasses or just blink when you strike of chips?
    Have you ever gotten any flint in your eye?
