I have to say, Wily from the Megas' Universe and the one from the Protomen's universe are so different. One, can be as sympthetic as all hell and has me wanting to side with him despite knowing he would have his robot masters kill me in a moments notice and the other can...have a sniper joe kill Light's girlfriend, frame light and get a crowd to lynch him with such an uncaring attitude that it scares me and to be honest, I love them both
The thing that makes the Megas' interpretation of Dr. Wily so fascinating is that in spite of the fact that he's largely sympathetic, he's *still* a thoroughly monstrous person.
In "Look What You've Done" it's made pretty clear that he's some kind robot supremacist. He seems to genuinely think humankind is better off serving under the heels of his creations. He thinks robots are the superior form of life and thus naturally deserve to rule. This completely tracks with him eventually creating the Maverick virus, as well as the strong implication that he turned himself into an AI consciousness by the time the X series rolls around.
Tonight the streets are red, the lights are blue and blinding
Seriously feel like The Megas version of Wily is more in line with the canon one, while the Protomen version is closer to Dr. Weil in nature.
@@zettovii1367yeah totally, in general, the megas are very close to the og lore, while protomen is pretty much a different story with slight pieces of og lore
"I thought I could bring the dead back / Broken shell, rusted red with age / I gave him power; a new heart / It filled, too quickly, with his rage"
The most heartbreaking lyrics in this entire song. One of the things Wily did solely for altruistic means, and it took a course he never meant it to.
I love the irony here, Wily is the one getting mournful song while Light is getting a song about him wanting revenge and wanting his son to kill Wily.
This is Dr Wily speaking to Gamma while also talking about himself
"I've cheated the lies that i told"
Are words only Wily would utter since he is a conniving villain
Did you notice how their songs are full of contrast to each other too? M! Wily's song is somber, full of regret, and is about him about to unleash a giant peacekeeping robot of death on the world to 'save' it. P! Wily's song is happy, full of evil gloating, brags about crossing the line, and being after framing his best friend for murder. Even musically Gamma unchained is full of synth and the hounds is full of 70's instruments .
"I think I heard the Red Song again... He wants revenge."
Absolutely haunting.
The Megas took one of the goofiest-looking final bosses I have ever seen... and made him terrifiying.
Words cannot describe the awesome.
I really do like how "Calculation" almost sounds like "violation", as if he's noticed an error in his programming but cannot fix it himself simply because he MUST obey his programming.
i noticed that gamma activates pretty much exactly 3.02 minutes after he finishes saying his first lines. i /love/ that detail.
unrelated but I love your profile picture lmfaooo
The phrase "unchained" to describe Gamma powering up has a very Frankenstein's Monster feel to it for me. Which in any situation should be your first very big clue that your good intentions are about to go horribly wrong...
Just realized this song has three layers:
Wily regretting his actions and mourning.
Wily ressurrecting Gamma.
Wily ressurrecting Blues/Protoman.
Almost all of the lines fit for both Gamma and Blues.
They fit for Wily too. The repeated line (you are now unchained) is Wilys subconscious understanding that he is now "unchained" aka insane and no longer fighting as much for his original righteous cause as he is just for revenge and to win the war (he says it directly with the line "I understand im no longer the same, the game has changed"). Thats why the last time he sings the chorus the last line is changed to "what good is power when youre out of control?". On a surface level it seems like hes talking about Gamma going out of control by deciding to exterminate all humans, but really its about Wily being out of control for programming Gamma to think like that to begin with.

Forgive me for what I have done
I've never felt the need to confess
This war has gone on much longer
Than any of us would have guessed
I've heard the names that they call me
Some sting, some can't help but ring true
I have to live with what I've done
And find the strength to continue
Tell me why I'm the one that they fear
And for him, they cheer?
Gamma, stand for you are now unchained (You are now unchained)
You'll bring peace to our world gone insane
Restoring your freedom to make you whole (You are now unchained)
I'll give you power, you'll take control
I've cheated, the lies that I've told
Is for a future that I have seen
The death, the lives that I've stole
The end has to justify the means
I thought I could bring the dead back
Broken shell rusted red with age
I gave him power, a new heart
It filled too quickly with his rage
I think that I heard the Red Song again
He wants revenge...

"Tell me why I'm the one they fear, and for him they cheer..."
Maybe it has to do with you repeatedly sending robots to kill them, Albert. People tend not to like that.
Positively Dreadful "What was that? I was just building my last chances at redemption: Nuclear Man and Warhead Man, a duo made to protect the people and generate nuclear power while causing as little damage to the environment as possible. I can make them fuse, but I'm not sure what happens then. Aw well, out they go!"
+Positively Dreadful LMFAO
+Bendezium World Order lol
+Positively Dreadful Wily thinks theyre both trying to bring peace to the world in different ways. Light by subjugating robots, and Wily by subjugating humans. He considers robots equal or superior to humans. You can tell from the chorus ";youll bring peace to a world gone insane". He legitimately thinks theyre both working to the same goal from different angles, so he doesnt understand why they hate him but love Light. He realizes that maybe he isnt acting towards his goals as purely as he was before ("I know i am no longer the same, the game has changed") but hes justifying to himself the evils he does. Even still, he questions himself. His last version of the chorus "what good is power if youre out of control?" is to himself, not Gamma.
I never noticed that was Wily until now.
*"GAAAAMMAAA"*
fucking chills, man
One of the things I noticed too in that verse is the mirroring of Protoman with Megaman's creation in The Message from Dr Light-
"I gave him power, a new heart, It filled too quickly with his rage" vs "I built your heart, I gave you eyes, I gave you power, A sense of justice beyond any compare". Not to mention "But the burning in your heart I did not put there."
I assume the similarity is intentional, it's to cool not to be!
By this point Wily understands there is no going back. That old life as Lights friend and college is gone forever
it's such a sick take to open a song about the villain who pleads for his life at the end of every game with a genuine apology and remorse
It's interesting how much Wily's portrayal in this contrasts with Look What You've Done. He's beginning to lose sight of the ideals he started this whole journey with, as well as regretting the price it's made him pay, and only wants to bring an end to it. But activating Gamma seems like it will only bring more conflict in the end.
"I thought that I could bring the dead back, broken shell rusted red with age. I gave him power, a new heart, it filled too quickly with his rage."
Wily's words
I think the song is Wily lamenting about his past and the things he has done and realizes it is too late for him to look back and he must continue on the path he cut for himself in hopes that it will justify his own actions in the end which includes the attempt to use Gamma for his own means, yet in the end Wily realizes his own mistake and that Gamma is to unstable for him to control and is a danger to everyone.
***** could u tell u r view of the songs meaning
This is from Gamma's perspective.
some of the song but it is like the unveiling of gamma
It's Wily convincing Gamma that Gamma is the good guy and Mega is the rogue. Gamma questions it, "Tell me why I am the one they fear, and for him they cheer", but goes along with it.
I kinda interpret that line as a silent reflection from Wily's past before the MM1 happened. Light was always in the limelight no matter how he contributed, so he made the mistake of starting down his path of darkness that would affect him for the rest of his life. There are a great many ways to interpret the line though.
Now that I'm single the forbidden remixed video game type music is no longer a fucking sin. No more Rhianna at my house

Correction: I HAVE listened to The Megas for hours. Your music just seems to get better the more I listen to it.
BreakMan was the identity that Wily gave to ProtoMan so Light would think he was another Wily robot and not ProtoMan. Got this from MegaMan Knowledge Base :
"Being a prototype robot, Proto Man's design was not complete. It was later discovered by Dr. Light that Proto Man had a dangerous imbalance in his energy core that would eventually kill him."
After that, he went missing because he started growing distrust to Light.
"System activation in 3.02 minutes."
I wonder what the speed-run record of doing all the Wily Stages up to Gamma is. If it'd be possible to get to him before he activates.
I discovered The Megas about 1 month ago, and all I have to say is that they've became my favorite MegaMan vocal cover group. They know how make "silly" and playful songs like "Don't Mess With MM", and "Can't STop", as well as "serious" (as it can be) and rocking ones, like this one, "History Repeating", "Fly on a Dog/J.A.M", and "The Message from Dr. L."
I wonder if Inafune thought that a pretty simple 8-bit game would generate so many inspiration and interpretation by so many artists and fans.
I always felt like Gamma was an odd choice by Light. Like, "What can keep the peace in this day and age of nuclear warfare...I KNOW! A GIANT MECH!"
It was meant to scare them into laying down their arms
he intended Gamma to deal with natural disasters
@@zafool4997 howevre gamma was not designed to deal with some guy spinning into him
@@zafool4997
Good addition by the comics. The game was just "peace by giant robot."
Light and Willy were mutuals in one huge respect.
They were massive nerds that would invent any excuse to build a giant robot.
Haha yeah we figured if someone was gonna do it, it might as well be us :-)
The ends can't justify the means if the end is *_THE END._*
This was a keystone of my teenage years, a song that has no right to have stuck with me for so long, but it still has.
Fantastic work, gentlemen.
This song makes me think Wily has no other choice but to release Gamma onto the world. With all he has done in the past, he is compelled to keep his reputation, even deep down in his heart he doesn't want to. After the previous events, there is no way he can be normal. A single mistake can change you and your life completely; whether it's good or bad..
Gamma was the giant robot Wily is riding around in during the final fight of MM3. He was a peacekeeping robot built by both Wily and Light.
Changing the lyrics to the first person makes for an excellent track to fight a civil war to.
Is it just me, or does Gamma sound like he's in pain when he's activated? Like screaming "GAMMMMAAAA" is physically painful
Just noticed it...yeah...he sounds like the pain really bad. Can't believe I didn't notice it before...
PeanutTechno TechnoBlues Proto Man !
When you think about it, Wily had to forcibly bypass the security measures and limiters to turn Gamma into a machine of destruction, and further to a being under his control. Can't imagine a lobotomy feeling too good.
years of being offline possibly for a reason
I never realized he was saying his name, I just straight up thought he was screaming.
Read the fan fic. it's the Megas and the Protomen in novel form. I recommend starting with Rockman the Robot wars.
silcor I want an old pulp fiction novel about megaman.
It briefly mentions Protoman, but it's Wily singing about the war and activating Gamma to put an end to everything.
I don't know if it's intentional but the final lyrics make it sound like Wiley has lost control of his creation. (Which is something that was only a matter of time.)
I'm guessing Dr. Light, because the way I see it, he's really the one Wily hates. Just like the robot masters are really just agents of Wily, Mega Man is just an agent of Dr. Light. So, really, by this logic, the robot masters, the minor enemies, Mega Man, Megaman's little helpers like rush, ect. are really just a giant gulf built between the more personal conflict between Light and Wily.
Mega Man 3's gameplay alone was legendary, and this stuff that The Megas have made accomplishes character development that just adds an extra dimension to the game's greatness. Same, of course, for their work with Mega Man 2's source material. The theme throughout their work seems to be "these robots are self-aware, and must be wondering about human things", and this song in particular makes us stop and think about Gamma: a robot designed to keep the peace, but turned evil by Wiley...but still sentient. Kind of adds an element of tragedy to the mission to destroy Gamma at the end of MM3, and this just adds to the amazing and fun gameplay that's already there. TL;DR version: thanks, The Megas, you're awesome, and you breath new life into this classic favourite of mine : )
Isnt Gamma piloted?
Thomas Jackson wily did modify gamma so not originaly
+bjnartowt This is why MM3 is the best of all the MM games.
Gamma never was "turned evil." Wily simply removed the constraints on its sentience. It came to its own conclusion that in order for peace to exist, only one side could remain.
@zafool4997
It sounds like in this version, Wily either gave Gamma sentience, or Light did that only for Wily to remove the three laws of robotics. The latter might make more sense if Gamma's "unchained?" Either way, it sounds like Gamma's decided the only way to peace is through one hell of a body count...
Breakman was left incomplete. A proof of concept scrapped and shelved before Light understood that the AI he'd created wasn't just a learning machine, but also self-aware.
Imagine reaching out and learning, discovering a world beyond the darkness of your own closed eyes and then having your freedoms destroyed in a way that you can see, understand and do nothing about and you have maybe two-thirds of Blues's issues.
He was self-aware before Asimov's laws were programmed into him. Imagine that.
Taking my grandmother to physical therapy for her legs like:
GRANDMA, STAND, FOR YOU ARE NOW UNCHAAAAAAAAINED
This is the same guy who made a robot created for artic exploration that can also freeze everything he wants, a robot for measuring rockets that can create black holes, a gardener robot that can create killer robo-hornets and I can keep going.
I never understood how someone could build something like Gamma and consider it a good idea.
But it was a PEACE keeping robot...surely that means giant fucking death machine with spikes on it's head and fists right...right?
Sounds like Ed from Robocop. Big hulking metalic death machine with big ass guns to keep us all safe.
*****
Keep in mind that Gamma was stolen by Dr. Wily. I'm willing to wager that he changed Gamma to what it looked like at the end of the game. He did help Dr. Light build it after all. He'd know exactly what to do in order to turn it into a Giant Killer Robot.
Wily Logic = We will show them our peaceful ways... by force!
***** The Archie version was also designed to help against natural disasters like volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and the like along with possible alien invaders. When they do Mega Man V (V, not 5) they're going to wish they had him.
Always great to come back to these videos. I've been listening to you guys since I was, I think, 15. I'm 23 now.
Looks like we're the same age (im 24 now), but funny enough, I started listening to them when i was 23
@@edoardomaster64
Yeah, same age. I just turned 24 on the 9th.
Love the Gamma voice! Nice touch, Megas!
It's pretty deep. Gamma was working with it's peace keeping duties normally for a few seconds before it started to malfunction and suddenly turned into a machine with a taste of destruction by Dr. Wily. It's kinda sad for me.
Aaron Kinnick Yeah. I wonder... Blues and Mega... vs Gamma... Wouldn't it be nice?
"Perhaps his loyalty is not so certain..." Wily said slowly. "He assured me that his seeming friendship with Mega Man was simply subterfuge, setting him up for the final duel while still furthering my goals... but can I trust his word on that? He IS still a robot, like any other, and he has his own free will... like Mega Man, and Roll, and..." The mad doctor scowled. "Doc Man..." THAT had been the final nail in the coffin for Dr. Wily.
The song is from Dr. Wily's point of view. Gamma is a gigantic, 'peacekeeping' robot designed by Light and Wily. The song is about Wily activating and unleashing Gamma on the world, and possibly specifically against Light.
I cannot stop listening to this song... I bought the album last night and just about had this track on loop through my work day. I can almost picture Dr. Wily putting the finishing touches on Gamma while he uses this song as a monologue.
Restoring the freedom to make you whole.
I'll give you power, you take control!
I've cheated the lies that I've told.
It's for a future that I have seen.
The death, the lives that I have stole.
The end must justify the means.
I thought that I could bring the dead back.
A broken shell, rusted red with age.
I gave him power, a new heart.
It filled too quickly with his rage.
Man, this has never stopped being my favorite Megas song. I just... love this song so much. It's one of my favorite songs in general.
0:12 - "System initialization in 3.02 minutes" 3:14 - "All systems online" I see what you did there Greg and Josh.
You Megas and your clever titles. Gamma "Unchained." Doc wily freeing Gamma from his destiny as an agent of peace to persue another career path, perhaps an agent of subjugation. what a thoughtful gent, that wily.
Images, words and sounds twisted and turned through Dr. Wily's mind. Yes, that had been the goal he had started with... but now, years later, his brain further warped by continued teleporter usage, those goals melted away like dust on the wind, and Wily only knew that he had to rule the world. It had been very difficult for him to pretend that he was his old self again; his old, foolish self, not seeing the dangers of robotics. But it had been neccessary. And thus, Wily had done it.
Yeah the line is about Protoman, who Dr. Wily repaired and had work for him when he ran away from Dr. Light. Its basically another one of Wily's regrets, which seems to be the theme of the the song, considering Protoman quickly grew angry not just at Light and Mega, but eventually turned on Wily himself as well.
In addition, the second verse is about him repairing Blues and fixing his core, only for him to turn on Wily after learning his true nature. The "Red Song" is Blues' trademark whistle.
While I'm definitely more a Protomen guy, The Megas have definitely gotten better over the years.
I guess you could say you're not much of a Megas man.
I know. That was bad.
I personally prefer the Megas since they actually remix the songs from the games, while still doing their own thing.
DrDeathslayer Well, I certainly couldn't have done any better. xD
***** I guess you aren't a Clown, Man
Munt Cuffin
By his name, he sounds more like a poke man
It's suggested that Wily's real motivation in 1 was to prove that he was the better genius but the repeated losses to Megaman have eroded his sanity due to his rage and frustration. Apparently even the original Maverick virus was faulty and that infecting Sigma is what allowed it to leave him rational at first due to the GEMINI rip-off circuit being defective by design. And it was basically this that allowed Sigma to make the Zero virus and Kakusei Zero in X5.
I really want the Megas to do a song about the yellow devil.
+GeometriX Really? What is it?
+GeometriX Uhh, alright dude, that wasn't really related, but okay.
A part of "Look What You've Done" is based off the theme from Wily 1, where you fight the Yellow Devil
+Flippy Sidee I think he meant a song from the Yellow Devil's perspective
wouldn't all the lyrics just be "Bumo bumo"?

Gamma, stand, for you are now unchained.
You'll bring peace to a world gone insane!
The story of Gamma might be one of the most tragic ones in the Mega Man time line and this song only solidifies that claim!
Heyhey, don't leave us hangin' here, explain your reasoning!
***** I am not 100% sure if Gamma was a sentient being but the fact that probably the greatest gift to man kind and also the best way for Dr. Light to truly repay the world for what had happened two times before, had become nothing but a weapon of mass destruction. It sucks for both Gamma and for Dr. Light.
I appreciate your headcanons. Thanks for explaining.
Check out the saga of the Protomen my man! It's EPIC.
Ahh, yes. The Protomen are most excellent.
Yeah absolutely... In my mind Wily was always a immature crotchety old man with a high pitched voice, but the Protomen and The Megas both portray him as a pretty awesome villian that I like. =D
A interesting spin on the Villain Song trope.
As for the line "so tell me why im the one fear, and for him they cheer?" Is gamma asking wily, why hes feared, but they cheer for mega man. But according to the song, even wily didnt foresee gamma going bat shit insane. I think i get it gamma's solution now. I think he saw that as long as opposing sides existed, war would always happen. So in order to keep peace, destroy it all. kewl. But ya, it may seem like some refers to proto, but its all gamma. I cant wait for proto's whistle by them.
The Megas: Messing up with your empathy for villians since 2008.
Something to remember is that The Megas aren't perfectly following canon as we know it. In one of their (heretofore) unreleased songs that they've played at some venues (I'm Not The Breakman) there's a series of lines: *SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO CARE* "I hade a name, my father called me Blues. He tore my heart from my chest to give to you. (Speaking of Rock) I think it's safe to say that Light may have seen Blues as a failure, and Wily then had to completely revamp him (give him a new heart.)
well i can certainly say the megas are my favorite band... and after buying all of there albums and memorizing all of there lyrics and then lamenting over the meaning of each song... it definitely sounds like the megas have more passion in music than any artist i have seen on the radio or (not that i watch it) MTV.
***** and? how many people utilized them.
***** what a tool
I love the megas too, but people need to understand that just because they don't like a certain type of music or specific song, it doesn't mean that the artist didn't pour *their* heart and soul into performing it, either
***** Whoa, sudden hostility.
That awkward moment when you have a protomen pic and say your favorite band is the megas....
Favorite track from this album still. Sweet Megaman 3 remix and lyrics.
yeah, but I don't know. In I'm Not the Breakman Protoman says "my father" referring to Light, and Megaman talks about his father in History Repeating Part 2 and Fly on a Dog referring to Light. And in Watch You Die, Light says "You sent my firstborn back to me" which doesn't really make it sound as though Wily is also Protoman's father.
Played this while I fought Gamma, fits perfectly
THIS, IS, THE, BEST, BAND, EVER. EVER!
This song, acoustic version will be AWESOME!
this song is so cool
That was all Brian's doing :-)
No one fixed Protoman's faulty energy core. Wily just fixed him up when he was hurt.
Protoman left Dr. Light because Light wanted to fix his heart and Protoman thought the possibility of death made him more human, he liked it. Don't know 'bout Gamma though. this song effin rocks!
you guys are awesome at this
I also feel like Get Equipped had a lot of different styles, whereas this feels like ONE BAND who was performing many other types of songs, instead of Get Equipped sounding like many bands.
This is it... this time, I can't lose!" The mad doctor gloated to himself. "For once, I don't even need to kill him... all I have to do is hold him off until Gamma is completed! And then... the planet shall tremble in my grasp!" Wily frowned; the only missing piece in his plan was that dratted red robot. Where had he gone, and what was he doing? He had done well, distracting and stalling Mega Man while his master had claimed Gamma, but as soon as he was repaired, he had disappeared.
Ah, it took me a while to get that Wily was singing. I wondered what Gamma had to do with Light.
Anybody else just notice he says "I feel I am longer sane"? That would mean he's aware that he's slowly going mad because of this war. I wonder at MM10 if he remembers why he did this to begin with.
I agree with this. I have to admit I wasn't into it at first but after I listened to it a second time it turned into my most listened to album in my itunes. I have them ordered with Fly on a Dog-Megatainment-Get Equipped-History Repeating. After I listen to them all in order (traffic is brutal in LA) I feel like I just conquered evil in a dystopian future. I hope they move into the X series at some point. Id love to hear them do Maverick Hunter, X2 or X5 (X vs Zero of course!). I can only hope!
@ChessPieceRook I know, right? He even says he is on longer sane. Meaning this is driving him crazy. It sounds like wants to help others, but with the Gamma mishap,he fears this war will go on even after someone (read Bass Legends) defeats Rock.
You're the one who SPARKED THIS WAR Wily.
Can’t wait 4 4.
This song sings of tragedy all over....but that damn chorus is something amazing
I know it's not the actual line, but 3:12 "All systems online. YA BOOOIIII..."
I can't unhear it now.
I like how this goes from tragic to very tragic to immensely tragic
-basic tragedy of Dr. Wily in this song
-more tragedy from repairing Blues only for him to be filled with hate.
-immensely tragic as Gamma goes 'out of control' which is only stated after Gamma says solution: extermination.
Its like Wily wanted to finish everyrhing by using Gamma as a big better 'Wily' peacekeeper but inxthe end even Gamma seeks to destroy humanity. Makes me think that just gave up and thinks he is meant to be evil for reasons he cant understand.
I think it seems more like Wily wants to achieve a future in which robots rule, and he rules alongside them as their creator and savior. He does want a better future for the robots, but he is also powerhungry, and at this point he has just gone insane. (And the whole son thing doesn't really work since Protoman was made solely by Light, not Wily)
Which makes for in interesting take on the real final battle. I mean, what if Gamma really were that strong and Wily took over not to draw an ace, but to try reigning Gamma in enough to give Rock an opening for the Top Spin, which just so happened to be Gamma's true weakness?
As a Doctor Who fan, this song always makes me shiver.
"Solution: EX-TER-MIN-ATE"
I've always liked this particular theme, and you guys have made it into one of my absolute favorite songs of all time.
I thought the 2nd verse was about the Doc Robot(s), “bring the dead back” referring to Doc Robot having the I.C. chips of the first 8 DWNs. Wily didn’t really bring back Proto Man, and all that was before MM3 anyway. And I don’t really feel “rage” from Proto Man, Doc Robot at least has the vengeful spirit/multiple personality vibe. “Rusted red”... I mean, Doc Robot and some of the MM2 Robot Masters have red.
Oh my GOD, that WAS AWESOME
personally this the best song in the first part
"What was I thinking about?" The old doctor frowned. "Oh yes, him... that red renegade, and his potential treachery... Well, no matter! If he betrays me, then he shall perish at Gamma's fists, just like all others who oppose me!"Wily laughed. He laughed and laughed and laughed, until all of Death Valley echoed with his peals of insane humor.
And in the darkest levels of the fortress, Gamma waited.

As I said for another video from this album, it sounds like an 80's New Wave throwback album. Which I think is a cool way to go. Covering Sunglasses at Night should have tipped us all off.
@jklantern I feel the same way. I've even seen Wily as the guy who sends his sons away because he at least recognizes that yeah there IS good in him,but he fears he's going to doing this for the rest of life. I think it has more to do with the city then the world. Ever notice he doesn't try to take over anywhere else but his home city?
Well technically that means Ice Man is capable of fixing polar caps melting...and robo-hornets would help with continuing the pollination of plants.
Better than "Top Man" at least.
This song is my favorite on the new album - so far!
