This was a very helpful video. The job itself is not complicated, but step-by-instruction helps it move along. It took me four hours from start to finish on my 2007 Accord, but setting up my work space took 90 minutes. Pulling the trim parts took some struggle, both in and out, mostly because the placement of the screws was difficult. I want to leave a couple suggestions to Mr. Eslick, 1st: describe more clearly the locations of the trim screws both for removing and refitting, define which are machine screws and which are sheetmetal screws and where each kind goes. They were especially difficult to access at finishing time, and I never found the hole or place for one machine screw, so I skipped that, but otherwise everything went as planned. 2nd: some tips for future users based on my project: test the new switch for full key movement before screwing in the screw that goes on the back of the switch. If you don’t there is at least one key position that will disallow turning the key. 3rd: After you’re sure the key operates the switch through all positions, then affix the wiring and try to start it. If everything works and it starts, then refit the trim pieces. And finally, thank you Mr. Eslick for your work on this video. It saved me about $1400 by avoiding taking my car into a shop.

What are the symptoms of a bad/failing ignition switch? I took several short trips last night and wondered if that depleted the battery to not start the car. When this happened before I changed the 100/50 fuse under the hood, changed the starter & triple checked the terminals were tight on the battery. I replaced the starter maybe a month ago or 2, but went to the store tonight and on my way home it wouldn’t start. Dash Lights, interior lights work, radio works, but when I turn the key the radio flashes and nothing else happens. I don’t hear a clicking and no other noise?
I have the same exact thing happening to my car… did you find out what it was? Was it the Ignition switch, neutral safety switch or a bad relay(pgm 1 or 2 / starter)?? I just put a new starter in a few weeks ago and I have to turn the key several times till it cranks and starts.
My car won't crank/start unless I try multiple times. I noticed that if I bang on the area where the ignition switch is located while turning the key, the car will usually start. I'm guessing this is a sign that the switch is bad right?

Hi - I have a question. What is the common cause of these malfunctioned switches? It is the mechanical or the electrical potion mostly? I'm looking at a car that has this a bad switch. 2004 civic.

I would only add : (1) the back screw on the ignition pack is a real bitch to get at - use a #1 Phillip's at least 4 inch length (2) when removing knee bolster - watch that the retainer clips don't fall off. @@HowtoAutomotive hey does the ignition starter switch have anything to do with the transmission ? My car just stopped in the middle of an intersection. Is THIS the piece of junk that hisses sometimes when I start my car?? Thinking I should find one cheap at the junkyard in case mine goes out. Any input thanks!
How is your ignition switch holding up? I am bit confuse about how genuine are those parts from Amazon since there is no way to say whether they are real or high quality fake! Do you have any idea?
You just saved me a couple hundred bucks and a lot of stress. Really appreciate the video brother. The second screw on the switch itself was a bitch to get to but other than that it was easy to get done. 🙏
Success, I did it, but a couple of the screws were as hard as hell to get to. My 2005 EX had a extra wire and plug-in blocking the screw on the bottom of the switch.....ugh!
What model is it? 2006-2007? Can you take the steering column cover out without taking the knee bolster? Maybe my one is jammed. Although I can see that I can access a screw just beside the steering column height adjuster with the knee bolster attached. I am not sure if that's the correct screw. Therefore I was wondering if your one is 2006-2007 and has a different screw position! My one is 2005 LX.

Don Casimiro 2003 Accord. Car dash lights will power on, headlights are bright (showing battery is good). Turning the key to start would result in nothing but a faint single click, the starter wasn’t getting power. Replacing this ignition starter switch solved my problem.

Hey there Brian, Thanks for the video. All the dashboard warning lights come on while I am driving and stay on until I turn her off. Would changing the ignition switch fix this problem or is it just the alternator? Thanks Gordon
I'm having trouble inserting the key, but I'm not sure if it's the key itself or the ignition switch. Does anyone know if Replacing the ignition switch will help. It starts fine, but Currently I have to jiggle the key to get it in
Jumped the car with a portable battery, everything stops if I let go the key after ignition, would replacing this component fix it? I also haven't been starting the thing for a good bulk of a year so... would it also be a dead battery thing?
Make sure you start with a good battery and make sure cables are all clean before jumping to any conclusions of ignition switches. After that I will also begin to see if the starter as possible.
Brian... What symptoms did the Accord in this video have with its ignition? I suspect a faulty ignition switch, which is how I found this video. You don't mention the specific symptoms that prompted you to replace this specific part. Can you elaborate? For instance, I have an '07 SE that makes a buzzing sound seemingly inside the column when I turn the key to start the engine. The engine will start only when I turn the key quickly with just the right finesse.
I don't know if this will help, but I have a 2003 Honda Accord EX. I ordered a replacement ignition switch on Amazon, 25 bucks and literally it takes 45 minutes to replace. One day I was getting ready for work, I went to start my car, turned the key and all the dash lights would turn on but no clicking or cranking from the starter. Looked up the symptoms and Google told me I needed a new ignition switch. I replaced it. Bam! Problem solved

@@HowtoAutomotive I faced the same issue. Replaced the ignition switch and now my key won’t turn. Why do I need to replace a lock cylinder if it was working fine before the ignition switch replacement?
The way to fix this, is to loosen up screws holding the ignition switch and make sure the key is turning. Then tighten screws a bit while checking the key for movement. Now, everything works fine!

I still have an extra screw in my ash tray that I removed by mistake. Anyway - if you get frustrated - take a break. The video shows all. Do remove the lower bolster - life will be easier. The switch is a snap to replace. 4 months past repair and zero issues. Remember to breathe... then tequila to celebrate your $300 savings.
Thank you. Great video. HOWEVER now my key wont turn. When I finished, it started chiming like the key was in the ignition. I hope I hear back from you. None of my mechanic friends have any idea besides change the tumbler.
Great video, you saved me like $200.
Great video! Subscribed.
My brother has a 06 accord that occasionally the AC doesn’t work. I checked coolant, leaks if any and also recharged the AC. He said it’s okay now but could a bag ignition switch also be the problem?
I’ve never run across an ignition switch cars in AC problems.
Thank you sir. I had the same problem and everything seems great thus far. Appreciate the video very much!
I have 2006 Honda accord SE. If i only replace the ignition switch ( not complete assy or keys), do i need to program the Keys again? will it affect anti theft system? any issues in starting the car with old keys?
Thanks Brian that was very helpful and something I can do, unlike a 1998 mercury I had the shop had to do it. They had to replace the whole steering column 500 bucks later. Peace!!!
Should , I remove the negative terminal from the battery
Your Video helped me to choose right product at right price. Thousands like!
Glad the video helped. Thank you for watching!
Do u have to disconnect the battery?
Omg thank u so much. Your video helped me so much. I just changed mine all by myself. Starts perfect
Nice! Glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
@@HowtoAutomotive hey does the ignition starter switch have anything to do with the transmission ? My car just stopped in the middle of an intersection. It didn’t stall but wouldn’t go in drive and made a weird loud noise. I know I installed the switch correctly but can a bad job make a transmission go?
Is THIS the piece of junk that hisses sometimes when I start my car?? Thinking I should find one cheap at the junkyard in case mine goes out. Any input thanks!
Hi, can I follow the same process to replace the ignition lock?
For the most part yes but there are a few additional steps.
How is your ignition switch holding up? I am bit confuse about how genuine are those parts from Amazon since there is no way to say whether they are real or high quality fake! Do you have any idea?
Do you need to get new keys and reprogram the fobs if you put in a new ignition switch?
If you’re changing just the electronic portion of the ignition switch then no.
@@HowtoAutomotive Thank you.
Did you disconnected the battery or not?
You just saved me a couple hundred bucks and a lot of stress. Really appreciate the video brother. The second screw on the switch itself was a bitch to get to but other than that it was easy to get done. 🙏
U made this seem super easy! Thx!
Would I have to disconnect the battery before following through with the removal process?
Success, I did it, but a couple of the screws were as hard as hell to get to. My 2005 EX had a extra wire and plug-in blocking the screw on the bottom of the switch.....ugh!
Thank you for this video! I was able to fix my Honda accord 2005 🙏🏻
OMG!!!!! 2006 Honda Accord ex V6, this fixed my issue. Im so happy!! That little screw underneath is a b*tch, lol
If my key won’t turn when in the ignition will this solve that problem?
Wow! Wow! My car a 2004 Honda Accord V6 would make a buzzing noise under the dash or I hear a faint click sound yet no crank many times I want to start the engine. About 2 mechanics adviced I change the starter . Just going through youtube and I saw your video, made a dash to an auto parts store did the replacement and Viola! The car starts up pronto, everytime.
Do I have to disconnect battery terminals?
Thanks, very helpful fast, saved $$$ and time, great video 5stars plus 5 more
So how did you know it needed a ignition switch. What problem it was giving you? ?
Don Casimiro 2003 Accord. Car dash lights will power on, headlights are bright (showing battery is good). Turning the key to start would result in nothing but a faint single click, the starter wasn’t getting power. Replacing this ignition starter switch solved my problem.
In my case I replaced the starter, battery, the positive battery cable, the starter relays lol. The problem it was giving me is that I had to turn the key many times to get the car to turn on. I hope this helps and good luck.
@@bhuezo did it work for you
@@devonwestley5953 Yes it did. It was easy to replace and wished I had known about it before spending all that money on the starter, battery, the battery cable and the relay. The part was like $40 at autozone.
Before doing this Do I discount the battery?
Thank you for video. I have probably T9 or T8 screw underneath the steering (not a phillips screw) in 2007 Honda Accord which is pain to get out.
Thanks, just fixed my 2004 Accord 50 bucks and 45 minutes labor. I was doing it in the dark.
Cleaven Smith glad the video helped. Thank you for watching!
I have problem when i insert the key i trai to start my key no move is stock you think that the problem
Hey there Brian, Thanks for the video. All the dashboard warning lights come on while I am driving and stay on until I turn her off. Would changing the ignition switch fix this problem or is it just the alternator? Thanks Gordon
Worked like a charm, thank you!
Thanks for video... Made it very easy to replace 👍🏾....
Very informative video, easy job.. Thanks...
Is this in anyway related to the recall?
Thank you. You saved us a good $200 at least 🙌
i don’t have that connector for my
panel? is that important
I'm having trouble inserting the key, but I'm not sure if it's the key itself or the ignition switch. Does anyone know if Replacing the ignition switch will help. It starts fine, but Currently I have to jiggle the key to get it in
hey Brian, i just bought a 2003 honda accord ex v6. how do i fix the radio with no sound? it shows the display but no sound.
Thanks very much. Just fixed 2003 Accorf for about 11 bucks.
Jason Bright Nice glad the video helped. Thank you for watching!
I have an accord 06 and lately and I noticed that the ignition heats up and this causes the key to warm up too. Will you have any advice
Surisadai Hernandez change it. That’s not normal.
Lothian Mcadam I have the exact same problem I removed the part in the video have not ordered the new one yet have you changed it and did it work?
I don't know if this will help, but I have a 2003 Honda Accord EX. I ordered a replacement ignition switch on Amazon, 25 bucks and literally it takes 45 minutes to replace. One day I was getting ready for work, I went to start my car, turned the key and all the dash lights would turn on but no clicking or cranking from the starter. Looked up the symptoms and Google told me I needed a new ignition switch. I replaced it. Bam! Problem solved
Ricardo Gonzalez do you have to reprogram it again
Hi Brian! I replaced the electrical ignition switch on my Honda accord 2006 but my ignition cylinder is locked key won’t turn and steering wheel is lock. What I need to do? thanks
Sounds like the lock cylinder need to be replaced.
Hello. Does this apply to the 2005 Honda Civic Lx as well??
Great instructions, saved me time. Thanks!
Glad the video help save some time. Thank you for watching!
Excellent diy. I will be trying this on my 03 accord which buzzes whenever I start it.
chooseanameforme888 did it work that’s the problem I’m having with my 05
I have an 05, v6, buzzes when I start it. Was it easy to fix? It looks hard to do!
I have a 2006 Accord with the same buzzing problem. Does changing the ignition switch usually fix this?
I haven't done it yet but it's on my list
@@chooseanameforme888 Hey, I just did it...replaced the ignition switch and problem solved. No more buzzing sound and the car starts right up like a champ.
