- During the summer of 2019, I paddled Lake Kushaqua in the northwest corner of the Adirondacks in the Debar Mountain Wild Forest . Lake Kushaqua has quite the history, at one time a TB sanitarium named Stony Wold was located on it banks. I tell the story of this history.....follow along!

You know there's a dam a little further down.
My and my family were almost killed in 1973, back when we rented the Yemasee boat house from Laura Williams (daughter of Hayden Tormey) and her husband Robert Williams (I think it was Robert). We were told to go to the "third bridge" for trouts (the "second bridge" was the time warp tunnel in the vid, which I always loved as a kid)
The "first bridge" was not far from the boathouse. I think it was a small overpass
We never went much farther than the second bridge in our little fishing boat until someone in the bait and tackle shop in "Tormey town" gave my dad the tip. He failed to mention that you had to drive there and hike a little to get to the trout stream. The third "bridge' was I guess a catwalk over the dam. We came incredibly close to going over. My dad had to lift the outboard to avoid destroying the blades in the now foot deep water. He and my mom had to row to where he could lower the propellers again and start the motor. (a pull start that NEVER started on the first try!) All while the current was pulling us toward the edge.
The scariest moment of my life.
I haven't been there since about 1980. I'm planning on revisiting this summer.
There's nothing like childhood memories, even the scary ones.
Cheers
I think I know that dam, if it’s the one I’m thinking of it was rebuilt just a couple years ago! There are tons of old dams all through the Adirondacks and some pretty interesting stories behind them!! Thanks for watching! 🍻
After the seminary part closed, the White Fathers reopened it as a family camp, called Camp Lavigerie. Many families stayed there for weeks at a time, forging close relationships that last to this day, long after the Camp closed. The houses in the area were all used as summer cottages. It was a wonderful place that gave us all a tremendous love for the area and the Adirondacks in general.
I’m actually camping there now! Spent yesterday on Mud Pond and went swimming for the first time this year!! Each time I’m there I check out the church. Still in good shape!
Another interesting bit of Adirondack history.
