  • Video shows wildlife biologists in Tyvek suits, respirators, layers of gloves and eye protection working to remove a hazardous cow carcass from the forest before it could kill more wildlife.
Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW) News release: www.dfw.state.or.us/news/2024...
The incident first unfolded on Feb, 3rd 2024, when ODFW received a mortality alert for a GPS-collared wolf in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. Flying into the area of the signal, they confirmed that the breeding female of the pack was dead. Later, the dead breeding male and a juvenile were also located.
Veterinarians have also confirmed one case of a domestic dog being poisoned that occurred about nine miles north of Enterprise in April. Another recent suspected poisoning case involving a dog was investigated six miles north of Imnaha.
The true toll took several more weeks to uncover, as ODFW and Oregon State Police - Fish & Wildlife Troopers continued to find dead animals; golden eagles, a cougar and coyote as well as a dead Steller's jay and black-billed magpie.
An on-the-ground search was needed to find the source of the poison and after hiking for a full day, ODFW and OSP found a cow carcass laced with poison in a creek in the Imnaha River drainage.
Poison presents a risk to wildlife, pets, water and other natural resources. Some poison can break down slowly and remain dangerous in the environment for long periods of time.
Leaving the poisoned carcass in the creek to kill more wildlife was not an option. ODFW coordinated with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to develop a plan to extract the carcass while protecting the health of staff.

This is an invasive, non-native, domesticated public land free grazing cow that died as they often do unsupervised out on public wildlands. Some welfare ranchers think they ought to dominate, control, and own at no cost public lands. The public lands, native species, and water resources are all severely impacted. Cattle spread cheatgrass, an appropriate name, on public lands making it more fire prone. As an act of widespread, indiscriminate violence, some ranchers poison the carcasses of their dead cattle, hoping wolves will consume the food put there by the rancher. An act of environmental terrorism in and of itself. In this case, the rancher's toxic cow is killing whatever (including people) drinks the water flowing downstream of it as well.

Poor thing; I hope whatever caused the poisoning is identified and addressed immediately. Thank you ODFW for being on top of this

Is the cow in the creek causing poisonings down stream?

The carcass was removed and ODFW will continue to monitor the area for remaining poison.

Hey, thanks for the long, but thorough text DESCRIPTION of what you were doing, and why you’re doing it. I don’t expect you to spend my license and tag fee $$’s on high end video production talk show, so thanks for NOT doing that…at least you told us what was going on. Not great to hear some dipsticks left a poisoned carcass anywhere, let alone near water.
Be a winner, go toe to toe with your targets and nobody else gets hurt.

Why a video with zero info. Help promote your actions by a little context. You guys have such a poor perception of doing little to manage our wildlife correctly, take 30 seconds, and share what you're doing. I'm not saying it changes how we feel about your mismanagement of our mule deer herds, etc, but any good publicity can't hurt.

I feel like UA-cam could be a huge fundraising opportunity and not just a vector of information if you were to get a good team to make these videos more interesting and informative. Just a thought
