My great grandfather was sent to a hospital back in the day for tuberculosis never to be seen again by his family. We have no known pictures of him so videos like this fascinate me. Looked like a sketchy place to explore but glad you're safe & thanks for sharing.

His father's name is on grandaddy birth certificate but intensive genealogy over 30 years has finally gotten SOME information about his life prior to this. Not much tho. In 1951 I lived on this Island as it was used to house Veteran families who were attending NYC colleges. Sadly they turned it into a place for teenage narcotic users who literally destroyed the island. What a waste, back then it was a beautiful place to live.

My grandparents lived on that island when my grandfather went to NYU. He is a WW 2 veteran. They both told me they enjoyed living on the island than. They said everyone was friendly nice and it was clean than. This was back in the 1950s.

Yes, mold should be the least of their worries. Although I’m an avid urban explorer and avid photographer, I am an environmental/toxic tort attorney by trade and can tell you people are still dying every day of mesothelioma due to asbestos exposures which occurred decades prior. There is a typical latency period of 30-40 years to develop the disease. Lead paint also an issue. Please take appropriate precautions.
@Royal Black I was thinking that as well there would lead in the paint, more asbestos than you could shake a stick at the dust would be extremely hazardous decent masks would be a must for these old places, gloves and decent boots recommended as well.

The stairs falling in is no joke! I had an entire fight of stairs fall out from under me in an abandoned tenement on Eldridge st in Manhattan back around 1976 going back down the stairs from the roof, I was literally hanging by my fingers that grabbed the threshold as I fell! I had walked up those stairs no problem, going back down I stepped down on the top step and all of a sudden the whole flight of steps simply fell out from under me.

I went to the roof to remove a sculpture from the facade by cutting a hole thru the parapet to access the back of it, it was 135# and I dragged it over to the stairs and intended to slide it down the steps, I turned around and took a step down onto the top step below the threshold of the roof door and started to slide the sculpture over to the threshold and my weight alone was all it took to cause the stairway to collapse. It was so crazy because I had walked up those very stairs a few hours earlier with no problem, creaking or anything. The flight below held the weight and impact force, so likely that top flight had rot from the open roof door allowing rain to get in. Had I slid the sculpture onto the steps plus my weight, there's no way I could have stopped myself, as it happened when the stairs fell out suddenly- I was facing the roof door and my arms were extended thru the doorway, I was able to grab the threshold as I fell. The whole flight of stairs fell down on top of the flight below, but with my weight and that sculpture if we had fallen down with the steps it likely would have been enough to cause collapse of the next flight and maybe more to pancake down like the WTC floors did. The building was 6 floors high, with an additional flight to the roof which would have been the 7th floor, it was at 214 Eldridge St, the whole block there was later demolished. I have the story and photos in my book about the abandoned buildings in NY City back in the 70s, www.randallwolff.com/gallery/ I do remember back then reading a story about a guy who salvaged from abandoned buildings in NY City who if I remember right- either had the same thing happen or the floor collapsed, he was left permanetly disabled from the spinal injury. Another guy who salvaged from buildings in Chicago was in a building being demolished and rescuing some ornate ironwork from the staircase on an upper floor the night before he was to get married, he wanted one more piece but something happened and a floor collapsed, either under him or the floor above him. His fiance reported him missing and said he had gone to the demolition site. The demolition was stopped for weeks while they dug through the rubble, they found his body in the basement under all the rubble from the floors and debris. Victorian Sculptures wow dude you are lucky then to be alive!! These NYC buildings are over 100 years old. I grew up in Long Island City and the building I lived in was built in the late 1800s. I now live closer to the Casinos in Queens by Ozone Park. Nice pictures!!

There was a dark hallway I was inching my way down and as I felt the floor ahead with my foot it suddenly contacted nothing- the floor was gone, it would have been very easy to fall thru that hole in the dark and wind up in the dark basement with no way out and no way to see anything. I thought nothing of climbing up scaffold on the outside of demolitions, one was a 32 story building on Wall St, being demolished in 1975, the other was the Commodore hotel on 42nd st, in both cases I figured a security guard was inside watching tools, I only wanted the artifacts off the outside of the building and didn't care about the tools, so to avoid him I climbed up the scaffold to around 3 AM, 32 floors to the top! Another building, on E13th st near Ave B had lost part of it's roof in a fire years before, so many that there was a 6" diameter TREE growing up thru the hole. I knew the floors would be rotten, and I tested on with the weight of a brick slid across- the brick went thru the floor like it was newspaper.

What a creepy place that is! I became interested in the island after I saw it on a boat trip when I was in 5th grade. It's amazing how protected the island has been from vandalism, nature has literally taken over. It's interesting to see what happens when a building is left to the elements for 60 years with no maintenance.
I did demolish ion in NYC on bigger buildings , when ya's tried going down , I would've slid down the bannister, they usually support the steps and where there's water damage like that walk as far right or left of a step , never in the middle , Great Video and Good Luck 👍😎

I am so glad you don’t over talk your videos like most of the other guys. But a little more explanation on this one would have been great. This was a cool find.
I believe the cage in the room was so the patients wouldn't burn themselves on the radiators either purposely or accidently.. Radiators got extremely hot and you could get disfigured even die from the burns.
That very well could be but I do not see the need for the chicken wire looking fencing (cage) to go from floor to ceiling? Not to mention a slot built into door? That's some serious restrainments. Very sad but the things pple had to deal with, I'd imagine your brain could play tricks, even to a healthy &/or sane person.

At Least the set designers should watch this film...it is facinating and the textures of the walls and floor are WOW. Ceilings are to scary for me to look at really. I heard about this Island a long time ago when I read a book about the archipelago of New York City. Great history of this place. When you go to explore places like these please where a facemask because these places have mildew and mold.

Apparently the adolescent drug treatment facility closed in 1963, and that was the last time any of the buildings were used. That's a lot of years of decay. With the island being forbidden, how were you able to even get onto it?
they actually didn't do any cremation on the island tho, I think there was a graveyard and they picked up most bodies by boat. The room that looked like a crematory was the boiler room. Everything on the island was heated by coal, so that was their boiler room, across from the morgue, and coal building. (I only know this cuz I did a nerdy deep dive)

Holy shit, you guys learned the hard way to NEVER walk up wooden stairs in these old buildings. Even if you get up the stairs, wood usually means wood floors and flimsy roofs. Stick to anything sturdier. You're doing good work. PLEASE be safe so you can keep doing it!
I nearly had a heart attack at 25:10 when they proceeded to go down the stairs, especially after seeing stairs collapse earlier. I hope they are a bit more careful next time.

Asbestos wouldn’t be an issue, it is only dangerous if it is cut into/drilled etc, and the particles inhaled.

I mean... it was a quarantine hospital, then veteran asylum, and then drug rehab facility. if ghosts exist, the ones there are definitely not very peaceful.
No kidding imagine if they tried to reuse these buildings, they'd probably be afraid to go into them to repurpose them.

What a creepy place that is! I became interested in the island after I saw it on a boat trip when I was in 5th grade. It's amazing how protected the island has been from vandalism, nature has literally taken over. It's interesting to see what happens when a building is left to the elements for 60 years with no maintenance.
There are some stunning visuals in this explore that are beautiful and eerie at the same time.

When you see planks going up old stairs. USE THE PLANKS! They spread the weight between all the steps.
I did demolish ion in NYC on bigger buildings , when ya's tried going down , I would've slid down the bannister, they usually support the steps and where there's water damage like that walk as far right or left of a step , never in the middle , Great Video and Good Luck 👍😎
First of all that place looks super not structurally sound and second you should be wearing a respirator (especially if ur in an asbestos era building)
Asbestos isnt dangerous when it is not being disturbed.

I am so glad you don’t over talk your videos like most of the other guys. But a little more explanation on this one would have been great. This was a cool find.
I believe the cage in the room was so the patients wouldn't burn themselves on the radiators either purposely or accidently.. Radiators got extremely hot and you could get disfigured even die from the burns.
That very well could be but I do not see the need for the chicken wire looking fencing (cage) to go from floor to ceiling? Not to mention a slot built into door? That's some serious restrainments. Very sad but the things pple had to deal with, I'd imagine your brain could play tricks, even to a healthy &/or sane person.

At Least the set designers should watch this film...it is facinating and the textures of the walls and floor are WOW. Ceilings are to scary for me to look at really. Had one fall in next to me and the dust alone weighed a ton. Glad you thought of this Polet Carola. American Horror is very interesting.

Awesome exploration, guys. I am so glad you didn't get hurt; it was a close call. I was hoping you'd pick up some of those books and documents to take a peek. Apparently the adolescent drug treatment facility closed in 1963, and that was the last time any of the buildings were used. That's a lot of years of decay. With the island being forbidden, how were you able to even get onto it?

they actually didn't do any cremation on the island tho, I think there was a graveyard and they picked up most bodies by boat. The room that looked like a crematory was the boiler room. Everything on the island was heated by coal, so that was their boiler room, across from the morgue, and coal building. (I only know this cuz I did a nerdy deep dive)

Man, that place is in sad shape. They must've had one massive boiler room though, burning tons and tons of coal, to keep all those radiators going in that huge place during the NY winters. Wow! Fascinating video. Well done!
Always inspektion the basement of a building like this if possible, there is often tunnels connected to safeplaces ect
with all that water percolating the basements and tunnels must be flooded

Holy shit, you guys learned the hard way to NEVER walk up wooden stairs in these old buildings. Even if you get up the stairs, wood usually means wood floors and flimsy roofs. Stick to anything sturdier. You're doing good work. PLEASE be safe so you can keep doing it!
