So I'm really shocked that you only had one prior comment on this. I personally think it's a terrific design. Practical and useful. I'm probably going to add an inside portion to the box to hold other sharpening items however, I love the concept. I'd give you a 1000 thumbs up if UA-cam would let me. Great design!

Thanks! Fairly small channel but, it's growing. Thanks so much for the kind words!

Very nice. I think I'll borrow this design. I'm thinking I will need to limit the space between the right side edge and the far right stone to about 3/4" at the most. I use a honing guide. I need to be able to reach the far right stone while the tool is in the honing guide to remove the wire edge from the tool without removing the tool from the honing guide (I go back and forth between the bevel side and the back of the tool to remove the wire edge). If I don't have some reference surface for the back of the tool to rest on the stone, my tendency is to rock the tool.

Thanks! After using this design for a few years I'm actually thinking of changing it up.. Another downside to this design is flattening the back on the middle stone. I find myself switching the stones to the first position most of the time.

These kind of stations are let down by the clean-up process, all the gunk gets into corners etc plus wood and water don't really mix. I've abandoned this style in favour of a shallow plastic tupperware lid which just happens to hold 2 water stones. The lid is held in place by simple fillets. The gunk just rinses or wipes off - job done.

Thanks.. I still use this one but, it is showing signs of needing cleaned up..

I have dabato stones that look like those, they are amazing water stones for the price, I'm surprised I've never seen a woodworker recommend them. The debato md series are large, and sharpen all steels well. I have steels ranging from generic, to o1 to pmv11, and it cuts them all well.

Should have watched first, as I see those are glass stones, and not even close to suhiro debato md line, sorry

Ive been thinking about building something similar and came up with a nearly identical design. The one thing that has held me back from building is the center stone. Do you find it difficult to flatten the back of the chisel on the center stone?

I rarely use the higher grits for flattening backs but, if I needed to, the stone just lifts out and I can put it in the end slots.

Can you show how you use it while sharpening?

I'll add that to the list for the next shop Q&A.
